In a tumultuous world… It is estimated that more than 110 million land mines are buried throughout the world. Buried within Afghanistan, Angola, Iraq, Kuwait and Cambodia are the largest concentrations of land mines. In Cambodia efforts at clearing mines around Angkor Wat and the major tourist sites have been successful. However, millions of mines remain buried and significantly impact the lives of the Cambodian people.
…one vision, when shared by others… As a child soldier, Aki Ra lived through Cambodia's tumultuous past. Today he is taking an active part in rebuilding the country he loves. In 1999 Aki Ra established the Cambodia Land Mine Museum in Siem Reap near Angkor Wat. His dedication and sincerity enable others to more fully understand Cambodian culture and to see first hand the resolve the Cambodian people have to address the issue of land mines.

Explosion rocks Cambodian poll
From CNN Correspondent Tom Mintier
Election campaigning, Cambodian style. Story Tools PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (CNN) In an already tense atmosphere surrounding Cambodia's general election, which began Sunday, at least one grenade exploded outside the FUNCINPEC party headquarters damaging nerves more than anything else. About 30 minutes later, two unexploded grenades were found across the street from the Royal Palace, where King Norodom Sihanouk lives. There were no reports of injuries in either incident. The grenade exploded about five hours after voting began at 7 a.m. (8 p.m. Saturday ET, midnight GMT). Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen who is seeking another five years in power and his ruling Cambodian People's Party are widely expected to win another term. He is being challenged by Prince Norodom Ranariddh and his FUNCINPEC party, and Sam Rainsy and his eponymous opposition party. Hundreds of international observers from more than two dozen countries were on hand to monitor the vote.

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia Cambodia's opposition leader Sam Rainsy is being detained in Thailand, an official has told Reuters new agency. Rainsy was detained for his own safety in case his presence in Thailand sparked violence, after arriving in Bangkok to hold a news conference about this week's anti-Thai riots in Phnom Penh. Thai authorities responded to the riots by barring all Cambodian citizens from entry into the country. Protesters in Phnom Penh damaged the Thai embassy and more than a dozen Thai-related businesses. Meanwhile, Thailand's prime minister has criticized his Cambodian counterpart for not doing enough to control the riots.

BANGKOK, Thailand Described as the "first step to normalizing bilateral ties," Thailand will send a delegation to Cambodia to assess the damage caused by recent anti-Thai riots that devastated relations between the two countries. The officials are set to leave Bangkok on Tuesday and will inspect the destruction caused by rioting mobs that stormed and torched the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh, the Cambodian capital, on Wednesday. The rioters also torched or vandalized hotels and other Thai-owned business. The rampage forced Thailand to evacuate more than 700 citizens by military plane and plunged Cambodia into a diplomatic crisis with Thailand, with Bangkok closing its border with its eastern neighbor, downgrading ties and suspending economic cooperation. Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has criticized his Cambodian counterpart for not doing enough to control the riots.

Cambodian stalemate over, Sihanouk heads to China
November 14, 1998
Web posted at: 2:17 a.m. EST (0717 GMT) PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (CNN) - A pact to form a new coalition government in Cambodia has paved the way for Cambodia to regain its United Nations seat and for it to join the Association of South East Asian Nations. King Norodom Sihanouk departed for China on Saturday following an agreement a day earlier by once-bitter political rivals to form a coalition government, ending a political stalemate which began with disputed elections in July. The elections gave premier Hun Sen's party victory but not enough votes to form a government alone. "All the deadlocks are over. There will be no more negotiations, no more talks, no way to have a dispute again and no more demonstrations," said Sihanouk, as he left Cambodia for medical examinations and treatment in China. On Friday, he presided over the agreement between Hun Sen and opposition leader Prince Norodom Ranariddh, both of whom were on hand Saturday to bid him farewell.

A brief history of Cambodia
Cambodia was a French colony for almost hundred years until it gained its independence in 1953. The king of Cambodia, Norodom Sihanouk , held all power until 1970 when he was removed from power in a bloodless coup d'etat by right wing forces led by Lon Nol . Sihanouk had tried to remain neutral during the Vietnam War. He refused to accept economic aid from The United States of America and broke off diplomatic relations with the USA in 1965. A bloody civil war broke out between the Cambodian right wing government and the Cambodian communist guerrillas, better known as the Khmer Rouge (Red Khmers). Lon Nol's government received economic and military aid from the USA and soon drifted into the Vietnam war. The USA bombed the Cambodian countryside in an attempt to destroy the North Vietnamese communist guerrillas.

The Khmer Rouge led by Pol Pot captured the capital Phnom Penh and all of Cambodia in 1975. After capturing the capital, they forced its population to move to the countryside and started a communist revolution. In 1979, the

The spokesman was also boasting that Cambodia’s recorded history stretched back for two His books include A history of Cambodia (3rd edition, 2000),
http://www.asiasource.org/cambodia/chandlerhistory.htm
Cambodia: Historical Overview When Communist insurgents known as the Khmer Rouge seized control of Cambodia in 1975, a spokesman claimed that in the process “2000 years of history “ had come to an end. What he meant was that the Khmer Rouge intended to break with the past and to overthrow Cambodia’s social relationships. The spokesman was also boasting that Cambodia’s recorded history stretched back for two millennia. In fact, archaeological data has revealed that the area we now call “Cambodia” was inhabited by human beings at least 40,000 years ago. Cities developed along the coast in the centuries before and after the birth of Christ. Indian and Chinese pilgrims and traders passed through these cities, and for the first centuries of the Christian era sources for Cambodian history that survive are almost entirely written in Chinese. Elements of Indian culture, in the meantime, took root among Cambodia’s elite, and by the 5th and 6th centuries several Hinduized kingdoms sprang up in southern Cambodia. We know about them from the remains of small religious monuments in brick, laterite and stone, from massive stone sculptures, and from inscriptions in Sanskrit and Cambodian, or Khmer. The earliest dated inscription comes from the 4th century AD., In the late eighth century, a Khmer prince later crowned as Jayavarman II returned to Cambodia from “exile” in Java, and began to consolidate the kingdom. In 802, in a ceremony near the site we now call Angkor, north of Cambodia’s Great Lake, he declared himself a universal monarch, and founded a dynasty that lasted until Angkor was abandoned in the sixteenth century.

Cambodian king pardons his ousted son
Prince Ranariddh March 21, 1998 Web posted at: 1:34 p.m. EDT (1334 GMT) PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (CNN) King Norodom Sihanouk on Saturday granted a royal pardon for his son, the deposed co-premier Prince Norodom Ranariddh, who was convicted of plotting to overthrow the government. Sihanouk signed the amnesty just before midnight, shortly after co-premier Hun Sen called on the monarch to pardon Ranariddh the very man Hun Sen ousted in a violent coup last July. The royal pardon came after several hours of confusion as to whether Sihanouk would, or would not, issue the pardon. The matter of a royal pardon is part of a Japanese-mediated plan that seeks to stabilize Cambodia's political situation, which worsened considerably when Hun Sen overthrew Ranariddh after an uneasy period of co-premiership. As part of the Japanese plan, Ranariddh agreed to be tried in absentia on charges of plotting with Khmer Rouge guerrillas to overthrow the government. He was convicted and sentenced to 35 years in prison and ordered to pay more than $50 million in damages in two trials this month. Five years of the sentence were for smuggling weapons. Ranariddh, who is in Bangkok, Thailand, denied the charges.
