Endnotes 1. For information on the Cambodian economy before 1970, see Remy Prud'homme's L'economie du Cambodge (1969) for an incredible, prescient view. See also Khieu Samphan's dissertation Cambodia's Economy and Industrial Development (written in 1959, but published in 1979), Jean Delvert's colossal Le Paysan Cambodgien (1961), and A. Dauphin Meunier's Histoire du Cambodge (1961). Work after 1970 includes Craig Etcheson's The Rise and Demise of Democratic Kampuchea (1984), Michael Vickery's Kampuchea: Politics, Economics, and Society (1986), Grant Curtis' Cambodia, A Country Profile (1990), and most recently, George Irvin's working paper "Rebuilding Cambodia's Economy: UNTAC and Beyond" (1993). In short, contributions to the study of Cambodia's economy have been uneven. The 1970s saw virtually none. 2. See Ben Kiernan's illuminating exposition How Pol Pot Came to Power (1985) and David P. Gayatri Rajwade Pol Pot: The History of a Nightmare
by Philip Short. John Murray.
Pages 656. £12.99
Philip Short’s biography on Pol Pot deals with an enigmatic man, complex and shadowy. The attempts to recreate Pol in his historical, social and political milieu interpret Cambodian history without playing on the accepted notions of the man. Consider the havoc Pol wrought on the people of Cambodia; is a dispassionate approach possible? The reader should decide. Pol Pot, Prime Minister of Cambodia between 1975 and 1978 and leader of the leftist Khmer Rouge, conducted one of the most terrifying regimes in modern history. In the early 1960s, to much of the outside world, Cambodia’s fame was associated with the magnificent temples of Angkor Wat. Regarded as one of the powerful nations in the region, Cambodia’s decline began with the waves of foreign intervention from the 1500s to the 1800s. The French arrived in the mid-1800s and ended up ruling Cambodia until 1954. Post-Colonial Cambodia was ruled by Prince Norodom Sihanouk. Throughout the 1960s, Sihanouk pushed to keep Cambodia neutral, as neighbouring Laos and South Vietnam came under increasing Communist influence, spurring a similar movement at home along with the added pressure of the war between Vietnam and the US raging on at its borders. However, Sihanouk’s autocratic style of governing, compounded with corruption and mismanagement and a disastrous foreign policy, alienated the masses and helped the Khmer Rouge to come to the forefront after a bloody civil war.

Minutes of Meeting from October 4, 2003
Place: IRCO Center in Portland, OR Lecture by: Professor Naranhkiri Tith; Theoul Thuch, Mabbeskal Man, Sichantha Ouk, Saron Khut, Veronica Ngi, Senghoung Man, Chhivlynne Kaing, Phala Eath, Kai Sor, Jeff McCormick, and families of WCC members. The seminar took place on October 4, 2003 in Portland, Oregon at 9:00 a.m. There were approximately 70 participants; a few were students from Washington and California. The purpose of this seminar is to look at the chronological events of the Cambodian history and how they attribute to the current political, social, and psychological problems. History encompasses both the positive and negative aspects of events, key personalities that shape history, and the consequences of their decisions. To diagnosis problems of today’s Cambodian society, we need to study patterns of development to trace underlying causes. The study of history is also subject to interpretation. Thus, it is also important to note the credentials of the presenter. There is another reason to learn history.

Cambodian History For the past 3 decades the Kingdom of Cambodia has endured a terrible suffering caused by war and poverty. This nation was caught up in the turmoil of the Vietnam War and then thrown into a heart rending "genocide" which led to the loss of 1.7 million innocent lives. In the midst of rebuilding itself socially, economically and psychologically, Cambodia encountered a new type of war called AIDS. Cambodia is currently experiencing the fastest growing HIV/AIDS epidemic in Asia. HIV was first detected in Cambodia in 1991 among blood donors, In 1993, the first case of AIDS was reported. Since then HIV/AIDS has manifested into the general population. Today, about 170,000 people are believed to be infected, over 3 percent of the adult population. CRANSTON The rich aroma of fried chicken and beef teriyaki drifted from the grounds of the Wat Dhamagosnaram Buddhist Temple on Plainfield Pike on Saturday. About 300 congregants monks, supporters and dignitaries ate and chatted outside, prayed in the indoor sanctuary or snapped photos of the awe-inspiring replica that had just been unveiled. Saturday's official unveiling of the miniature Angkor Wat temple complex brought a permanent monument of Cambodian history and heritage to the Ocean State. This was, indeed, a cause for celebration, said Sarin Rath, president of the temple. In Cambodia's Siem Reap province, Angkor Wat is one of the major temples in the Angkor area. It is a wonder of the world and is heralded as the largest complex of buildings in the world, Rath said. The compound of buildings, temples and monuments, surrounded by a moat, spans 500 acres and was constructed between 1113 and 1152 to honor the Hindu God Vishnu of the Angkor Dynasty.

http://teacherlink.ed.usu.edu/tlresources/units/Byrnes-celebrations/camb.n.y.htm
Mini-Unit Subtopic: Cambodian New Year Grade Level: Author: Kathy Moss Background: Cambodia is a country located in South-East Asia. On some maps it is referred to by its former name, Kampuchea (kam-poo-CHEE-uh). It is mostly flat land with a few mountains on the southern border. Some of the countries surrounding Cambodia are Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Malaysia. The capital of Cambodia is Phnom Penh (puh NAWM pen). Khmer (cah'MY) is the official language. The population is 7.1 million people. Cambodia has undergone conflict and invasions for several years. Because of these wars, hundreds of thousands of educated people have fled the country to find safety. With the loss of so many skilled workers the country has been weakened. As a result of this loss Cambodia is very poor. Agriculture is a way of life in Cambodia. There are many small farms and plantations. Many farmers harvest rice. Cambodia is also one of the major world producers and exporters of rubber. The people of Cambodia are concerned about the well-being of others. Helping one another is a custom of the South-East Asian people. The main religion of Cambodia is Buddhism. With this religion comes the belief that one can be freed from the pain and suffering of the world through righteous thinking and living. Buddhists believe that a person's life in the hereafter will be better if they fill their present life with good conduct and good deeds. The Buddhist monks teach them how to live a moral life and aid them in understanding the teachings of Buddha. Cambodian families often go to the Temple to pray to Buddha. Many families have small altars in their homes where they can pray to Buddha and their ancestors.

Yale University study of the period 1975 through 1979 during which 20% of the population lost their lives.
    http://www.yale.edu/cgp/
The Cambodian genocide of 1975-1979, in which approximately 1.7 million people lost their lives (21% of the country's population), was one of the worst human tragedies of the last century. As in Nazi Germany, and more recently in East Timor, Guatemala, Yugoslavia, and Rwanda, the Khmer Rouge regime headed by Pol Pot combined extremist ideology with ethnic animosity and a diabolical disregard for human life to produce repression, misery, and murder on a massive scale. Since 1994, the award-winning Cambodian Genocide Program, a project of the Genocide Studies Program at the Yale Center for International and Area Studies , has been studying these events to learn as much as possible about the tragedy, and to help determine who was responsible for the crimes of the Pol Pot regime. In Phnom Penh in 1996, for instance, we obtained access to the 100,000-page archive of that defunct regime's security police, the Santebal. This material has been microfilmed by Yale University's Sterling Library and made available to scholars worldwide. As of December 2003, we have also compiled and published 22,000 biographic and bibliographic records, and over 6,000 photographs, documents, translations, and maps, along with an extensive list of CGP books and research papers on the genocide.

    Cambodians defy violence to vote
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (CNN) Incidents of violence have marred Cambodia's landmark local elections, but voters continued to turn out in high numbers at the polls. A candidate from the opposition Sam Rainsy party candidate was found dead Saturday night in his home near the capital. Police ruled the hanging a suicide, saying the man had a history of depression, but party officials said they suspected foul play. An election observer was found dead Saturday in Svay Rieng province, authorities said Sunday. He had been bound, stabbed multiple times and shot in the eye. The man's boss said he suspected his employee was tortured. Despite the violence, voters cast ballots in record numbers Sunday, according to official estimates and eyewitness reports. The major issues, which have been discusses in several public forums, are clean water, lower electricity and water prices, and improvements in roads, schools, and health care.

Web posted at: 4:57 p.m. EDT (2057 GMT) PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (CNN) Thousands of people attended elections rallies on Sunday, as the campaign for next Sunday's parliamentary election entered the home stretch amid calls for a truly democratic government. The party rallies came amid heightened tensions, as there were more reports of election-related killings. The deaths have raised fears of a repeat of the kind of violent upheaval seen a year ago, when co-Premier Prince Norodom Ranariddh was ousted by his coalition partner, Hun Sen. The deposed Ranariddh told an emotional rally of about 5,000 people in the capital's Olympic Stadium that the election represented a choice between oppression and democracy.
