Spread around the jungle outside the town of Siem Reap, Cambodia, you will find the ruins of the great ancient Angkor temples. They are by the National Geographic considered as one of the three most important cultural attractions in the world and are also on UNESCO's World Heritage list over cultural sites that should be preserved. Many people who have never been to Angkor believe that it is only one monument. However, Angkor was the capital of the mighty Khmer Empire from the 9th to the 14th century. From here a dynasty of Khmer kings ruled one of the largest and most sophisticated kingdoms in the history of South-East Asia. The construction of the ancient capital lasted for more than 300 years leading to several changes in the architecture and also religious movements from Hindu towards Buddhism, which is still followed by more than 90 percent of the Cambodian population. Covering an area of 250 km2, and with more than 1000 archaeological sites, Angkor was made up of hundreds of buildings. Because of their links to the Gods, only the temples were considered good enough to be built in stone. The wooden structures have perished over the years, leaving only the Angkor temples to be seen today. The Siamese made repeated raids on Angkor in the 14th century, and battles continued for almost another century. After a final siege in 1431, the Khmers gradually shifted their capital southward to Phnom Pehn. Angkor was more or less abandoned to the jungle, and was pretty much forgotten in the jungle until the French explorer Henri Mouhot, in 1860, brought public attention to what many people today consider to be the eight wonder of the world.

- Return to top of the page - Our Assessment: B : decent overview of recent Cambodian history, but uneasy mix of travel-account, history, and commentary See our review for fuller assessment. The complete review 's Review Facing Death in Cambodia does a good job of describing the rise of the Khmer Rouge, the outrages committed by the regime between 1975 and 1979, and the after-effects to this day. Author Peter Maguire is particularly interested in the attempts to bring the Khmer Rouge to justice specifically through war crime trials and chronicles what he sees as the failed efforts to overcome the horrible recent past and allow for renewal. Maguire travelled to Cambodia several times between 1994 and 2003. He was especially fascinated by the infamous pictures of the prisoners at the notorious Tuol Sleng (S-21) prison and hoped to find the photographer, as well as anyone else who either worked or was imprisoned there. Over the years he met with and spoke to many victims and a few who were involved in at least some aspect of the atrocities, and along with the general historical account he offers he provides a solid overview of what has happened in Cambodia over the past three decades.

Cambodia's Bad Dream: A new look at Pol Pot's horror show
By Bertil Lintner Pol Pot: the History of a Nighmare , by Philip Short. John Murray, London: 2004: 656 pages Was it genocide or "just" a crime against humanity? Philip Short, a former foreign correspondent for the BBC, sets out to answer that question in his book about the rise to power of Pol Pot in Cambodia, and what actually happened there during the Khmer Rouge era, from April 1975 to January 1979. It is not pure semantics. If it was genocide, it would require a special kind of justice under international law. As a crime against humanity, domestic justice would suffice. Short reaches the conclusion that the Khmer Rouge did not "exterminate a 'national, ethnic, racial or religious group'"the definition of genocide. Pol Pot and his men, Short argues, "conspired to enslave a people," their own. They were brutal mass murderers, yes, but not comparable to the Nazis. Quite predictably, that conclusion has provoked a strong response from those who argue that the Khmer Rouge are indeed guilty of genocide. Ben Kiernan, director of the Genocide Studies Program at Yale University, Connecticut, wrote a scathing critique of Short's book for the Times Higher Education Supplement in London [February 25, 2005.] He accuses Short of ignoring the 1999 legal report of a group of United Nations experts, who recommended that Khmer Rouge leaders face charges of genocide, having "subjected the people of Cambodia to almost all the acts enumerated in the [genocide] Convention." The present Cambodian government has agreed to the formation of an international tribunal to try surviving Khmer Rouge leaders for genocide, and the findings of Kiernan and other researchers would then be presented as evidence. Short's assertion undermines those efforts, which explains the criticism of his book.

Background:
Following a five-year struggle, communist Khmer Rouge forces captured Phnom Penh in 1975 and ordered the evacuation of all cities and towns; over 1 million displaced people died from execution or enforced hardships.
A 1978 Vietnamese invasion drove the Khmer Rouge into the countryside and touched off 13 years of fighting.
UN-sponsored elections in 1993 helped restore some semblance of normalcy, as did the rapid diminishment of the Khmer Rouge in the mid-1990s.
A coalition government, formed after national elections in 1998, brought renewed political stability and the surrender of remaining Khmer Rouge forces.

Within a month, towns, private property, markets and money were abandoned; law-courts, government offices and schools were closed and religious practices were forbidden. As everyone set to work under the supervision of revolutionary soldiers, Democratic Kampuchea became a prison farm. Pol Pot and his colleagues, who believed that secrecy had played an important role in their victory, only revealed their identity to the world in October l977 when forced to do so by their Chinese patrons.

This destructive process reached a climax in the mid-19th century when the kingdom was on the brink of disappearing. Cambodia is a nation known for its two extremes in history: the splendor and glory of Angkor, the capital of the Khmer Empire from the 9th - 13th century, and the perverse horror of the Khmer Rouge period, in the 1970's. Visitors are often baffled at the contrasts of Cambodia. The country confronts one with the extremes of human potential: humanity at its most creative, inspired and dynamic, yet also at its most cruel, destructive and venal. Cambodia is actually home to many features above and beyond the far ends of the human historical bell curve. The country has a diverse topography, with magnificent coastline, dense forests, and the

Clockwise from bottom left: KR chairman Pol Pot; US president Richard Nixon; KR foreign minister Ieng Sary; KR security chief Khieu Samphan; Cambodian prime minister Lon Nol; King Norodom Sihanouk) In the grand scheme of Cambodian history, 45 months of communist rule may seem seem like a random tangent when compared with over a thousand years of Cambodian culture. But the Cambodian holocaust is much more complex than that - a long series of events encompassing the entire 20th century may all be seen as contributing factors. In Cambodia Before the Holocaust you can explore the many interconnected episodes of modern Cambodian history that led to the Khmer Rouge regime.
