Ancient Cambodia
The movement of the Khmer people before they came to Cambodia is not clear. By 800 A.D., there were large numbers of Cambodians living in the area surrounding the Tonle Sap or "Great Lake." They lived on the rice and fish of the area. There were probably more Khmers there at that time then there are people in all of Cambodia today. They were hardworking and clever and their rulers became very powerful. The years 802-1431 A.D. in Cambodian history were called the Angkor Period. During that time, the Khmer kings ruled over one of the largest regions in all of Southeast Asia. Many different kings ruled during the Angkor Period, and most of them were very religious. Their Hindu religious rituals were very important to the people and to the culture, and it was these beliefs that made the Khmer kingdom so powerful. A Khmer king could associate himself with a particular Hindu god, and then, construct a huge, pyramid-like temple to honor the god, and himself. Eventually this would serve as the king's tomb. So Angkor, therefore, can be described as a succession of "king-cities" where each king built his own monument, and then moved the capital there.

http://www.phnompenhpost.com/TXT/comments/how2.htm
back to headlines COMMENT How to slice a century of Cambodian history By David Chandler
As far as Cambodia is concerned, the century just ending can be fruitfully described in several ways. An unpromising approach would be to cut the century more or less in half, with fifty-four years labelled "the colonial era" and the rest "Cambodia since independence."
A better approach would be to see Cambodia gradually emerging into a wider, largely indifferent world, buffeted by a succession of foreign influences, starting with France, continuing through a period of haphazard but brutal American interference followed by stretches of Chinese and Vietnamese Marxism-Leninism before "ending" in 1999 with an ex-Communist government facing the amorphous challenges of globalization.
A final approach to Cambodia's history in the 1900s, unpalatable to an historian, is to suggest that as Cambodia emerges into Southeast Asia and as Southeast Asia enters the world, Cambodia is losing the capacity to generate its own history. What had been in some sense an island or a village is being submerged in a global ocean, affected by global changes in climate, population, culture and economics over which no one in Cambodia has any control. Seen from this perspective, as from the third, "Cambodian" history as it has been constructed and written about in the past may be coming to an end, as "Cambodia" loses parts of its former meaning.

28. PPP 9/3: History's Lessons
With all these factors and Pol Pot s insane policies, cambodian history was expressed in the most cruel and atrocious manner, genocide.
http://www.phnompenhpost.com/TXT/letters/L903-2.htm
back to headlines
History's lessons Dear Editor,
For over 600 years, Cambodia has steadily declined from its previous place of glory and power. Like any great empire, a period of decline is expected, but why did Cambodia's decline result in the rise of the Khmer Rouge and ultimately genocide in Cambodia? I do not seek a definitive answer to this question, but merely wish to briefly express my thoughts on this issue and the means by which Cambodia can move beyond its current decline.
History has generally given credit to the leader(s) of a nation as the force that molds and changes a nation. To a certain extent, this is true because leaders generally possess the powers to direct the movement of a nation.
However, with such movement, there must be a force that supports and pushes the movement forward. That force is the people, the accumulation of acts, thoughts, ideas and experiences of the people. A nation's history is not molded by leaders alone, but by society and all the factors that come into play within that society. Thus, Pol Pot did not rise to power by the mere force of his own will, but the will of millions of Cambodians who supported him.
The rise of the Khmer Rouge did not just happen by some mere chance, but events in Cambodia's history were a backdrop to the inevitable rise of Pol Pot. The existence of injustice, corruption, oppression of the peasants and tyrannical rulers have dominated Cambodian society for centuries. Thereby, when Pol Pot promised the peasants equality, power and justice, the peasants willingly welcome it with open arms.
