Cambodia: Identity crisis surfaces after riots
By Marwaan Macan-Markar
PHNOM PENH - Since the anti-Thai violence here in late January, Saray Andeth finds himself caught between two distinct emotional poles - his loyalty to his native Cambodia on the one hand, and his gratitude toward neighboring Thailand on the other.
It is an unavoidable predicament that the slightly built, quiet-spoken Saray finds himself in over the month since the riots, which sent Thai-Cambodian to their lowest point, broke out here.
Saray remains thankful to Thailand, a country that opened its doors to him as a refugee from 1979-92. There were hundreds of thousands of other Cambodians like Saray who sought safety in Thailand from the war and bloody turmoil in their country during the mid-1970s. "They welcomed us; they offered us an escape," said the 27-year-old.
But this gratitude is up against his strong sentiments of being a Cambodian, and a budding Cambodian writer of fiction at that. Saray, a member of the Khmer Writers Association, has written 18 short stories and novellas over the past four years.

Expressions of Independence Book and Exhibition Look at How Cambodian Culture
Found a New Identity in the 1950s and '60s by Michelle Vachon Exploring past and current styles, rewriting rules and, at times, defying the authorities. Such was the art world of the 1950s and 60s in Phnom Penh, which emerges anew in the pages of a book and exhibition titled "Cultures of Independence." Released this weekend by the Reyum gallery, the 398-page volume and accompanying exhibition document how the artists of that period created new styles. "An emerging urban elite undertook the task of conceiving, defining and building a 'modern Khmer culture,'" wrote authors Ly Daravuth and Ingrid Muan. "Whether consciously or not most of their work took up questions of how to create forms that would be recognized as both Cambodian and modern." In the Modern Painting chapter, Sam Kem Chang says, "We have to change tradition. But don't eradicate tradition. Tradition should be known and improved." Sam Kem Chang was among students of the Sala Rajana (the School of Cambodian Arts) who learned to paint through observation under the direction of a Japanese teacher named Suzuki. Suzuki's approach was revolutionary, since most previous training consisted of precisely copying traditional themes over a grid pattern. And yet Sam Kem Chang says, the artists who created these traditional motifs centuries ago worked from observing people and nature, which is why he says he believes students should analyze the traditional work before switching to modern forms.

Note: Generalizations about Cambodians (Khmer) are about as accurate as generalizations about any other large group. Nevertheless, to better understand Cambodians or other groups or cultures, it is necessary to deal in generalizations to some extent. The following is written in a spirit of respectfully seeking to understand and to serve. Introduction Once the dominant military and economic force of Southeast Asia, Cambodia was, by the late 1800's, a part of French Indochina. From the beginning of colonial rule, there was resistance to the French. With the Geneva Convention of 1954, Cambodia became independent with a government ruled by Prince Norodom Sihanouk. Communist and other dissident activities were repressed from that point until the late 1960's when the Khmer Rouge, led by Maoist extremists, in particular a man named Pol Pot, became active. A brutal and complex armed struggle ensued, resulting in many deaths. In 1970, a replaced Prince Sihanouk with right wing military rulers. Fighting escalated and on April 17, 1975, a deeply divided Cambodia fell to the Khmer Rouge.

Broadcast starting week of July 21, 2004 More than 20 years after fleeing the brutal Khmer Rouge regime, many Cambodian refugees are still trapped in the psychological grip of their past. This one-hour documentary special examines the mental health of Cambodian refugees living in America, and the impact of trauma on the hundreds of thousands of other refugees pouring into the United States. Journalist Karen Brown spent a year researching and reporting the story, and worked with The Infinite Mind's executive producer, June Peoples, to produce and write the special report. The documentary also features Dr. Richard Mollica, a psychiatrist and co-director of the Harvard Program in Refugee Trauma, John Salzburg of the Center for Victims of Torture, the extraordinary accounts of people who were terrorized by the Khmer Rouge two decades ago and still live with the trauma, and a follow-up discussion with Dr. Patricia Shannon

Peacebuilding in Cambodia:
The Role of Religion
Catherine Morris Working Paper, 2000 Executive summary
Full Report
Project summary and purposes
This project considers the role of religion in peacebuilding in Cambodia. From May 13-June 13, 2000, Catherine Morris conducted thirty-eight interviews in Cambodia (in English or through interpreters) with Buddhist and Christian clergy and lay leaders as well as human rights, legal development, conflict resolution and peacebuilding scholars and practitioners within civil society and government. Research also included literature review and documentary and literature research in Cambodia. A draft chapter is now in the editorial process, forthcoming in 2002 in Religion and Peacebuilding This research was partly funded for the purposes of a project on "Religion and Peacebuilding" by the University of Victoria's Centre for Studies in Religion and Society, and the Centre for Global Studies. The two Centres are developing a team-authored book to examine the spiritual and ethical resources for peacebuilding within the world's major religions, including Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Confucianism, and Aboriginal traditions. Several case studies are being developed including chapters on Cambodia, Bosnia, South Africa, and Ireland. Catherine Morris, director of Peacemakers Trust, was invited to write a case study chapter Cambodia. Since over 90% of Cambodia's population is Theravada Buddhist; the primary focus of this research was on the role of Buddhism in the conflict and peacebuilding in that country. The role of Christianity in Cambodian conflicts and peacebuilding was also considered, although more briefly. It is hoped that the reports and writings emerging from this project will provide opportunities for Canadians to build understanding of how Cambodian culture and religious perspectives play out in current politics, orientations to human rights, and conflict resolution. It is also hoped that this research will build understanding about useful and unhelpful strategies for development and other missions.

Cambodian music history
A distinction must be made between "music in Cambodia" and "Cambodian music," for the former embraces all ethnic groups within the national boundaries while the latter is limited to the majority, Cambodians. The northern provinces of Rattanakiri and Mundulkiri include hilly plateaus which are home to the Pnorng (Pnorng), an upland Mon-Khmer speaking group, while in the southwest along the Koulen and Cardamom ranges are found the Kuoy (Kui), Por, Samre, and other upland Mon-Khmer speakers. Their musical expression emphasizes gong ensembles, drum ensembles, and free-reed mouth organs with gourd windchests. In the west, around the great lake (Tonle Sap) live Cham, Chinese, Vietnamese, and other lowland minorities, but the extent to which these groups maintain their traditional musics is not largely known. Cambodian music flourished in both court and village settings, some associated with specific functions, others with entertainment. In villages weddings are celebrated with kar music, communication with spirits is accompanied by arakk music, and entertainments include

Cambodian Culture, Over Two Decades Later
Preab Sovath is a popular singer of young people in Cambodia. He is talented. I like listening to his songs he sings since most them are about heart broken stories of a man. I was born in 1982, few years after the Pol Pot regime. So I live in post-war country. Older generation prefer Sin Sisamut, whom I little know about. As far as I have heard he was a well-known singer back in Sangkum Reastr Niyum period during 1960. Of course, he left an invaluable wealthy and heritage to my generation. Today, music production company make a lot of money from his art work. Nearly all of lyrics he sang has been modified and revised for new singers by various productions. At wartime people had to deploy all means to survive, at the present people have to compete to live better lives. posted by ThaRum permalink

History of Angkor Wat
If you know nothing in advance about the temples even as you step through the gates, then it is best to have either a knowledgeable guide or at the very least a good guide book, of which there are many readily available for sale by locals immediately outside the temple gates. Many hotels and guesthouses in Siem Reap can arrange a tour of the sites or one can be arranged through one of the travel agents that specialize in Angkor Wat. If you are an independent traveler not on an organized group tour, you will need to purchase a pass to enter the temples. Passes for 1 day ($20), 3 days ($40) and 1 week ($60) can be bought from the official entrance booths on the road to Angkor Wat.
