Anyone interested in discovering the fascinating world of ancient civilizations can enlist the Internet to learn about past cultures and their historical significance.
Buzzle Staff Editor, 7/14/2000 Whether you're a historian studying ancient worlds, a tourist wanting to explore lost civilizations or a student looking for historical data on past cultures, the World Wide Web offers numerous helpful resources to meet your individual needs. All interested parties can go online to find extensive information on such historical subjects as the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Among these notable monuments are Stonehenge, the Taj Mahal, the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Great Wall of China, Angkor Wat in Cambodia and the Lighthouse at Alexandria.
Although some of the original seven wonders, including the statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, no longer exist, the Internet allows you to take a virtual tour of these magical forgotten landmarks. Furthermore, most of these historical web sites discuss the ways in which these aforementioned structures provide insight into the evolution of various forms of architecture.
There are also many online resources that focus on such fabled ancient worlds as the island of Atlantis, which, according to legend, sank beneath the Atlantic Ocean. Other sites offer concise educational materials on past civilizations in Egypt, Africa, India, Canaan, China, Maya and Mesopotamia. Regardless of the reason why you are seeking information on ancient worlds, you will definitely find an infinite number of resources with the help of the World Wide Web.

After a few days in Bangkok, we were ready to hit the road. Beaches were in our plans, but I wanted to explore before I settled in the sand. Cambodia wasn't far, and it was safe enough to feel comfortablebut not too comfortable. I convinced Beth that we'd have fun there, and we booked a flight directly into Siem Reap. Literally translated, Siem Reap means "Conquered Thailand," a tribute to the once-mighty conquering Cambodian kingdom. However, after less than a decade removed from the brutal and tyrannous reign of the Khmer Rouge, the cultural capital of Cambodia no longer seemed able to conquer much of anything anymore. Landing in a propeller plane after a 90-minute flight, I saw none of the buildings, paved roads, or other forms of modern civilization that I was accustomed to seeing around airports. There was little to seeflat, beige-colored specks of land with clusters of palm trees and an occasional waterway. Where the hell were we?

There are two great complexes of ancient temples in Southeast Asia, one at Bagan in Burma, the other at Angkor in Cambodia. The temples of Angkor, built by the Khmer civilization between 802 and 1220 AD, represent one of humankind's most astonishing and enduring architectural achievements. From Angkor the Khmer kings ruled over a vast domain that reached from Vietnam to China to the Bay of Bengal. The structures one sees at Angkor today, more than 100 stone temples in all, are the surviving remains of a grand religious, social and administrative metropolis whose other buildings - palaces, public buildings, and houses - were built of wood and are long since decayed and gone.

Ancient Civilizations Books Lost Civilizations Of The Stone Age Richard Rudgley. Published By Touchstone. 320 Pages. This book is one of the most fascinating accounts of lost civilizations that you will ever read. A people who buried their nobles in clothing containing thousands of mammoth-ivory beads in 25,000 BC. A Neanderthal man - blind in one eye - who underwent the successful amputation of his arm over 46,000 years ago, and lived for many years after under the care of his tribe. Evidence of humans burying their dead 90,-100,000 years ago. A sculpture of a woman that is between 233,000 and 800,000 years old. Strong evidence that Man was making ocean voyages 40,000 years ago or more. This book is full of fascinating revelations like these that will totally absorb you. Richard Rudgley reveals a world very different from the one you know. There is a certain poignant sadness in realizing how much of our human heritage has been lost forever. Recorded History began only around 5,000 years ago, but this book makes it clear that Man has possessed many of the attributes of civilization for countless millennia. Lost Civilizations Of The Stone Age does NOT follow the Atlantis/Antarctic hypothesis, but presents a less speculative approach. It argues for a long history of human development over tens of thousands of years, leading up to the "sudden" appearance of civilization around 5,000 BC. Truly a fascinating read that will change your view of the Human Race forever.

A Cruel Race to Loot the Splendor That Was Angkor
SIEM REAP JOURNAL
By JANE PERLEZ
March 21, 2005
The New York Times SIEM REAP, Cambodia - Hidden among stands of bamboo far from the throngs of tourists who clamber over the grand temples of Angkor, a series of bas-reliefs in rose and gray sandstone stand in solitary splendor. The gods and demons and half-human, half-animal figures revered by the Angkor civilization were carved at Mount Kulen by anonymous artists and, like countless other artworks, disappeared into nature when the empire collapsed 500 years ago. Now, like much else at Angkor, the carvings are symbols not only of the mystique of the past but also of the greed of the present. In the past six months, a head of one of the figures was gouged from the

Is there a continuity between past and present? What have we learned from previous civilizations? What has been the legacy? The past lives on in scenic ruins that attract tourists today and have done since ancient times. There were tourists in the ancient world too. We can't help but wonder what did they see and what did they make of it? Many accounts of such trips are to be found in the library's collection. A subject browse search of our catalogue with headings like History, Ancient Voyages and travels Discoveries in geography , or Geography, Ancient will start to give you a feeling for the depth and range of the subject matter here. Given the extent of the material available, you may just want to browse the shelves starting at the 930 call number area. Library staff will be happy to assist you. Cultural identities and practices live on partly through and as a result of the accounts and experiences that have come down to us from early travelers and explorers.

The Olmecs: An African Presence in Early America
(In Celebration of Black History Month)
By Paul A. Barton The Perspective
February 28, 2001 According to an archeologist who recently participated in archeological work in Mexico, One of the most ancient civilizations in the Americas, the Black (Negritic) Olmecs developed a calendar that goes back to about 3,113 years Before Christ. The archeologist who appeared on the Art Bell show made that point. The ancient "Olmecs" of Mexico and Mesoamerica are one of the most intriguing civilizations of the Americas. In fact, they are the first civilization in Mexico and it was from them that all other civilizations in Mesoamerica followed. Yet, the fact that the Olmecs were most likely a Black civilization of African origins has not been made public and the "Indian" elements in Mexico have gained more prominence to the extent that the Negroid substrata of the ancient Mexican/Mesoamerican civilizations has been kept hidden. Yet, over the past many years, various levels of proof have been found linking the "Olmecs" to Africans in the Western part of Africa: Linguistic Similarities Studies done by researchers such as Ivan Van Sertima (They Came Before Columbus), Alexander Von Wuthenau (Unexpected Faces in Ancient America), Runoko Rashidi and others have presented evidence that clearly show that the Olmecs were not Indians with "baby faces," or Indians who looked like Blacks (although a few Olmecs did mix with the Native Americans). They were Africans no different from Africans found in the Mende regions of West Africa.

The mighty computer chip. It can unlock the limitless mysteries of the universe, sending probes to planets beyond our view. And it can help physicians unravel the microscopic puzzles of the human body. But can it help put back together one of the great monuments of an ancient civilization? That was the question posed in 1995 at a scientific outpost in the jungles of northwest Cambodia. At the heart of the royal city of Angkor Thom stand the remains of one of the most fabulous legacies of the great Khmer king Udayadityavarman II ("Protected by Rising Sun"), who, by most accounts, reigned for 16 years in the middle of the 11th century. On his death, he left behind The Baphuon, a three-tiered Hindu temple devoted to Shiva, standing in a compound measuring 425 meters by 125 meters.

New Clues to Angkor's secrets Recent discoveries of ancient kilns in the Angkor area are causing a stir among professional archaeologists and amateurs alike. Local villagers may have known about these ancestral sites for centuries, but only now has their existence been brought to the attention of the outside world. One of the first sites was revealed by chance during the construction of a new road, the tractor unearthing layer after layer of ancient pottery shards. A de-mining team, clearing land of mines for farmers to plant rice and build schools, was the first to report other sites to national and international scientific authorities. Though this may be far from the thoughts or planned objectives of development agencies, international founders or private investors, increased knowledge of Cambodia's past may prove to be one of the most important benefits of nascent economic and political stability. What first appeared to be isolated kilns are in fact turning out to be whole centres of ceramic production. At least three different sites have so far been identified to the northeast of the Angkor Archaeological Park. Set amongst villages and rice fields, the kilns themselves appear to the naked eye as simple mounds - nothing more than natural variations in a typical Khmer landscape.
