Angkor What?
Siem Reap Everyone warns you about the trip over the border from Thailand into Cambodia. It’s meant to be a horrible crossing with long lines, beggars, ripoff artists everywhere and terrible service all around. Many folks choose to fly from Bangkok to Siem Riep just to avoid the hassle. Knowing that we had one washed passport and one passport without an entry stamp to Thailand... we braced ourselves for a "worse than average" experience, but remarkably we had very little problem completing the immigration procedures and entering Cambodia. Getting to Siem Reip, however, was another story. There are numerous transportation options... bus, pick up truck, or private taxi... that’s not the problem. We had chosen a private taxi for the 2 to 3 hour trip and had negotiated an agreeable rate. The problem is the road. It’s a virtually non-existent, dirt track with no lighting and huge potholes. Apparently, the road has improved dramatically over the last few years, but it’s still rough going and a bone-shaking trip the whole way. We were stopped at several "check-points" (ie., "bribe stops" for the taxi driver), encountered 3 damaged bridges, and suffered 2 punctures in the car’s tires.... but we, finally, did make it to Siem Riep. The big draw card for travelers in Siem Riep, and indeed in all of Cambodia, is the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat. The ancient Khmer civilization, at it’s height in the 1100s, built incredibly beautiful temples and royal palaces out of stone which are decorated with detailed bas reliefs and carvings. The most famous of which is the temple of Angkor Wat. We spent our whole first day exploring this most famous and best preserved temple. It is truly awesome. Your first glimpse of the main temple after passing over the moat and through the gate house takes your breath away simply for the sheer size and beauty of the place. We were also in for a surprise.... in our preparation for our trip, we’d seen numerous photos of the main temple and assumed that it had 3 spires. After all, that’s what you see in the photos. However, there are actually 5 spires, but you can only see 3 at any one time.

The Funan and Chenla Kingdoms (1st - 9th centuries) The Kingdom of Angkor (9th -15th Centuries) The great stone buildings of Angkor, constructed by both Hindu and Mahayana Buddhist kings, were the focus of Hindu or Buddist cults to celebrate the divinity or Buddhahood of the royal family. Their construction reflected the Hindu mythological universe, both in their architecture and in the many carvings which adorn them. The society of this empire was hierarchical, with the divine king owning both the land and the subjects. The Brahman priesthood and the official class constituted the elite; the remaining population consisted of the peasants who grew the crops and were subject to high taxes and labor services and a large slave class which did most of the heavy work of building the temples and other buildings. THE ORIGIN OF THE PRESENT POLITICAL, SOCIAL AND LEGAL SYSTEM OF CAMBODIA AS A REVOLUTIONARY RUPTURE WITH THE PAST By Basil Fernando The attempt to see a continuity in the political changes that have taken place in Cambodia since its independence has led several observers to underestimate the revolutionary impact of the period beginning with the capture of power by the Khmer Rouge and ending, theoretically speaking, with the signing of the Paris Agreements. If the proneness to violence is used as the test of revolutionary change, then “modern Cambodian politics may be seen as a succession of brutal changes, involving merciless replacement of ruling elites.” From this point of view, the overthrow of the Sihanouk regime by Lon Nol will differ from the Khmer Rouge takeover only quantitatively but not qualitatively. However, a socialist revolution is not a mere replacement of one elite by another. It involves a total transformation of the political and social fabric of a country. The change that takes place is a substantive one. Once such a transformation takes place, the return to the status quo involves a fundamental and substantive change in the political and social fabric. A theoretician will naturally feel more comfortable in dealing with a situation of continuity rather than of revolutionary change. Naturally most of the constitutional laws deal with situations of continuity even after periods of disruptions. Even the change from feudalism to capitalism has many aspects of continuity. Often centuries pass before such transformation is completed.

Angkor ceased to be a living city in 1431 when the Khmer abandoned it in face on constant attack from the Thai's. With time the ruins were all but swallowed up by dense jungle. An ancient civilization lost to nature. The popular myth but in fact Angkor was never lost as such, rather it became less and less accessible. It was still known locally as a place of pilgrimage, a vague memory in the minds of European missionaries. It is claimed that the last Kingdom was re-discovered by French naturalist Henri Mouhot in January 1860. Wether or not the Kingdom was ever lost remains a matter for debate but what is not in question is that the posthumous publishing of the accounts of Mouhot's travels did trigger European interest in Asia's single most remarkable archaeological site - The Temples of Angkor. Angkor Wat was built in the 12th century by Suryavarman II is the largest religious building in the world measuring at its base 1,500 metres by 1.300 metre. When one crosses the Naga bridge it appears as if there are just three towers. It is not until one has entered the inner courtyard that the other two are visible. It was originally built for worship to the Hindu gods. To the north stands the Bayon with 54 stone towers, each the face of Bodhisattva on each of the four sides and stands at the centre of Angkor Thom. It is surrounded by a moat and is approached at the four cardinal points through massive stone gates. Ta Prohm to the east of Angkor Thom is particularly fascinating as it is left as it was found with roots of the trees growing up though the masonry of the ancient temples.

Stones in the Sky - Part I
Before the Journey to Angkor Wat
By
Willard Van De Bogart
S It has always been fascinating to me how my life began to shift to SE Asia from California in 1998. My interest in Buddhist Temples took me around the countryside of Thailand always appreciating and always seeking the mystery that created such beautiful architecture. But always in the back of my mind there lurked a curious fascination with the teachings of Gotama Buddha and the secrets that seemed to be incorporated into all the temples. But knowing that Angkor Wat was designed on a star system similar to the pyramids of Egypt got me very curious because now I felt a deeper reason which drew me to SE Asia in the first place. What was Angkor Wat? That became my number one question when I arrived in San Francisco, California. My stay was only for a few months before I would return to Thailand in late June, and in those few months I had expressed my new found insights and interests to several of my friends. To my absolute astonishment a close friend had saved a rare book written in 1926 titled "Four Faces of Siva" by Robert J. Casey. The book had originally belonged to Frank R. Girard of the Bohemian Club of San Francisco who had also penned his name on the inside page. The book was presented to me to read by Dan Donahue of Santa Rosa, CA. The book is a detective story of a vanished race; i.e. the Khmer Civilization. After a two-month stay in San Francisco I returned to Thailand, and the in-flight movie on my return, believe it or not, was a sequel to the first movie I saw where Graham Hancock was again mentioning Angkor Wat. This time the movie was mentioning the placement of Angkor Wat in Cambodia as being 72 degrees separated from the Giza pyramids on the surface of the earth.

Angkor is a vast complex of some 1,000 temples covering about 100 square miles of northern Cambodia. The Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (AIRSAR) developed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Pasadena, California, has revolutionized the way archaeologists view the way the city developed in ancient times. Little is known of the prehistoric occupation of the fertile Cambodian flood plain. However, at its height the city probably housed a million people. Its now-famous temples were built in the time from the eighth to thirteenth century AD. They were accompanied by a massive hydrological system of reservoirs and canals.

Excavating the Delta By Miriam Stark At twenty-seven hundred miles, the Mekong River is one of the world’s longest rivers. It flows through China, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, and its delta is one of world’s great rice-growing regions. Along the western edge lies Angkor Borei, a town that archaeologists hope may hold a key to Cambodia’s ancient history. An international team of archaeologists at work there has found ancient pots and glass beads, and recently, an ancient cemetery containing forty-five human skeletons that may date as far back as 200 B.C. Many Cambodians consider Angkor Borei the cradle of their civilization. In one Cambodian creation story, an Indian Brahmin priest named Preah Thaong left India for Southeast Asia and arrived at the Mekong Delta. There he encountered the beautiful princess Soma cavorting at the shore. She was the daughter of the king of the nagas, or serpents living beneath the ocean. The princess and the priest fought for control of the region; he defeated her, and they fell in love and married. It is said that King Preah Thaong introduced Hindu customs, legal traditions, and the Sanskrit language to the population. It is also said that he “drank the waters” that covered the land which may have signified draining parts of the delta for farming and gave the people a kingdom that he called Kambuja. The Mekong Delta is flat, low-lying, and prone to flooding; geographers believe that during ancient times it was easily farmed through rice agriculture.

Ancient Indian Architecture
This is a granite temple panel - one of many that show the splendor of Indian temple architecture. The Science of Architecture and Civil Construction was known in Ancient India as Sthapatya-Shastra . The word Sthapatya is derived from the root word Sthapana i.e. 'to establish'. The technique of architecture was both a science and an art, hence it is also known as Sthapatya-kala, the word Kala means an art. From very early times the construction of temples, palaces, rest houses and other civil construction was undertaken by professional architects known as Sthapati. Even during the Vedic times, there existed professionals who specialized in the technique of constructing chariots and other heavy instruments of war. These professionals have been referred to in the Rig Veda as Rathakara which literally means 'chariot maker'. The excavations of the ruins at Mohenjodaro and Harrappa (today in Pakistan) proved the existence of a developed Urban civilization in India. The Indus valley civilization is dated around 3000 B.C. Thus since the last 5000 years. India has had an urban civilization. The existence of an urban civilization presumes the existence of well developed techniques of architecture and construction. These techniques would no doubt have had been systematically stated in record books for transmitting them to the later generations as well for being used as reference media for actual construction. Unfortunately, as far as the Indus Valley civilization goes no such records have been preserved either as rock edicts, manuscripts, etc., or in folk tales and legends.

India The earliest civilization of India was an urban civilization that grew up in the Northwestern part of present day India and Pakistan. So far about 1400 sites have been uncovered from as far north as Afganistan to Goa in the south. More sites are being unearthed and recent excavations have brought a lot of lost Indian history to light. This Indian civilization is known as the Indus-Swarasvati civilization or the Harappan civilization (as Harappa was one of the first cities discovered). This ancient civilization was a remarkably advanced one with the largest and most sophisticated cities. The civilization flourished in the third millennium BC according to modern archaeology but there are several problems to the modern dating. The civilization was highly sophisticated and traded with the other ancient civilizations. Among the ancient civilizations, this was largest and the biggest trading nation. They traded overland in the begining with ancient Sumer and a place near the Black Sea. They were also the first seafarers ( Lothal: ancient docks ). This probably evolved out of need. Their land trade routes were attacked by nomadic peoples. By sea they went to the Gulf region of Arabia and set up colonies. They also went as far as Egypt and China. (Interesting Note:

Ancient civilizations hold a fascination for many people. I've been hooked since I first set eyes on a National Geographic that had photos from King Tut's tomb. My grandfather also had an extensive collection of arrowheads, which served to remind me that the US also had its own ancient civilizations. Very little is known about the Mound Builders of the Ohio Valley. The Serpent Mound is an incredible sight from the sky, but we can only speculate on why it was built. There are even a few effigy mounds in my hometown. If Indiana Jones inspired you, you're sure to find something of interest below.
