Earthwatch Archaeologist Explores Cambodia
Dr. Charles Higham, who has excavated rich Iron Age sites in Thailand with Earthwatch teams, investigates new sites in neighboring war-torn Cambodia.
Cambodia harbors some of the most impressive archaeological sites in the world, including the incomparable monument of Angkor Wat, legacies of the Khmer civilization which dominated the region from 600 to 1450 a.d. But decades of political instability, inflamed by the Khmer Rouge regime of the 1970s, have left many of these sites abused and neglected. Responding to new era of peace in the region, Earthwatch-supported archaeologist Charles Higham was one of the first to explore Cambodia's historic riches.
Higham, a professor of anthropology at the University of Otago, New Zealand, and a Fellow of the British Academy, reported on visiting Cambodia in a recent Discovering Archaeology Online Weekly Newsletter. The article describes the evolution of the ancient Khmer civilization, the history of archaeology in the region, and the result of three visits to Cambodia with colleagues in 1999. The visits were an extension of Higham's excavations in neighboring Thailand, supported by Earthwatch's Origins of Angkor project.
"The highlight of our time in Cambodia was rescuing information at the Iron Age cemetery of Phum Snay, which has been 99 percent destroyed by looters," said Higham. "Phum Snay is a huge cemetery 70 kilometers to the west of Angkor Wat. We plan to work there for another few seasons, but first we need to get a permit from the authorities."

Located in what is now Cambodia, Angkor Thom, capital of the flourishing Khmer empire in the 11th century, once was one of the world’s most densely populated cities. An incredible mass of dazzling pagodas grew up around Angkor Thom, culminating in the glory of the magnificent temple complex at Angkor Wat. With the fall of the Khmers, the temples were slowly recaptured by the lush forest and remained a hidden legend until 1861 when they were re-discovered and introduced to the western world. Join Far Horizons for an exciting 19-day trip to Cambodia and Laos that includes six days exploring the great Khmer city of Angkor Thom, including glorious Banteay Srei and remote Beng Mealea. While in Cambodia, we will visit the nation’s capital of Phnom Penh. Here we will see the National Museum filled with Khmer treasures, the Royal Palace, and the Silver Pagoda, home of a priceless emerald Buddha. And out of the capital, we will travel to the out-of-the-way and splendid complex of Sambor Prei Kuk.

The modern state of Bangladesh officially came into existence through a people's liberation war in . Bangladesh is the eastern part of Bangla . Bangladesh (East Bengal) and West Bengal (in India) are the same nation and together they once formed the major part of Bangla (Banga or Gaur). There were some other parts of Bangla though that are no longer within East or West Bangla. Bangla was divided into East and West Bengal by the British, first in 1905, but the separation proved unpopular and was reversed in 1911. Later during the partition of India, rich Muslim landlords in the East supported the division. So since 1947, Bangla has once again been divided into at least two parts. Bangla was ultimately ruined by this division and today, there are those who have been de-culturized to such an extent that they feel the people of the other Bangla are foreigners.

from "Ancient Wisdom for Modern Ignorance."
By Swami B.V. Tripurari. Clarion Call Publishing 1994. Here is a fascinating piece of information about Hindus and Mayans connection. According to Ambassador Poindexter, in his two volume 1930s treatise "The Arya-Incas", called the Mayan civilization was 'unquesionably Hindu' in origin. Alexander von Humbolt (1769-1859) an eminent, European scholar and anthropologist, was one of the first to postulate the Asiatic origin of the Indian civilizations of the Americas. What mysterious pyschological law would have caused Asians and Americans to both use the umbrella as a sign of royalty, to invent the same games, imagine similar cosmologies, and attribute the same colors to the different directions? The Aryan civilization of India is a logical choice for the beginning of the diffusion of our planet's civilization. American historian Will Durant, in his book 'Our Oriental Heritage', described India as the most ancient civilization on earth, and he offered many examples of Indian culture through out the world. He demonstrated that as early as the 9th century B.C. E. Indians were exploring the sea routes, and reaching out and extending their cultural influences to Mesopotamia, Arabia, and Egypt. Most modern day historians prefer to accept ancient Egypt and Babylon, as the most ancient civilization. Because they have no living representation and thereby pose no threat to the status quo.

Kim Saunders: Vietnam Unveiled: A Conversation With Kim Saunders
by Kim Saunders
When did you first travel to Vietnam and Cambodia?
I decided to visit Vietnam in 1997. I had been asked to join a lecture tour, and I wanted to do some hands-on research. I was also cognizant that Vietnam was becoming a must-see destination, and I wanted to experience the people, the country, and the culture. Long before my opportunity to visit the countries of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, those names evoked the exoticism of Indochina and the tragic media images of the political conflicts of the 1970s. Only recently opened to tourism, these destinations afforded the chance to glimpse some, as yet, unspoiled cultures and view examples of magnificent heritage. I was so enamored with the grace and integrity of the Vietnamese people and the beauty of the country, I returned in 1998 to visit the hill tribes of the northern highlands, having first traversed Laos north to south. Since then, I have accompanied seven shipboard expeditions through Vietnam and led a program to Laos for Zegrahm last year.

Angkor Wat - Cambodia
There are two great complexes of ancient ruins in southeast Asia, one at Bagan, Burma, the other at Angkor in Cambodia. The temples of Angkor, built from 879 - 1191AD, when the Khmer civilization was at the height of its development, represent one of humankind's most astonishing and enduring architectural achievements. From the great citadel of Angkor, the kings of the Khmer empire ruled over a vast domain that reached from what is now southern Vietnam to Yunan, China and from Vietnam westward to the Bay of Bengal. The structures one sees at Angkor today, more than 100 temples in all, are the surviving religious remains of a grand social and administrative metropolis whose other buildings - palaces, public buildings, and houses - were all built of wood and are long since decayed and gone.
Cambodia's ancient temple city is one of the wonders of the oriental world. Masterpieces of decorative details as well as of architectural style, its awe-inspiring ruins survive as testament to the spectacular achievements of Southeast Asia's greatest civilization. Like Cambodia itself, Angkor has suffered bitter changes of fortune down the centuries, none more so than in our own time. Today, again accessible after long years of civil war, the ruins are once more attracting world attention as a priceless heritage site. At the same time, Angor remains an enduring monument to the people of Cambodia, their past glories, their hopes and aspirations.

These days, it looks as if Cambodia's assets might finally be able to get their due attention as tourists discover Cambodia's untapped beauty and rich history. The ancient civilization of the Khmer is accessible and written large and in stone at Angkor Wat. The monumental Hindu temples are breathtaking in both beauty and historical significance, a lost city telling its story in crumbling roads, behemoth buildings, and ornate bas-reliefs covering crumbling temple walls. Then there is Phnom Penh, the capital, tatty but charming, with crumbling French colonial architecture and a splendid palace. Cambodia is resplendent with natural gifts; the Mekong River is the country's lifeline and can be followed as it winds through the countryside. Cambodia's main highway connects with Tonle Sap, or Great Lake, Southeast Asia's largest lake, surrounded by fertile lowlands. Cambodia's economy struggles, but now a member of ASEAN and under a peaceful coalition government headed by Hun Sen since 1998, the outlook is promising. Tourists know it and are coming in droves, many to rush into the countryside before the tour buses discover it. While Cambodia is not yet risk-free and a trip entails following safety precautions to the letter , this land's marvels will be well worth your effort.
