USE Campa Indians Sometimes instead of searching by keywords, you may have better luck finding materials by consulting the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). This is important because you can sometimes get better search results. For example, articles, books, and web sites on "Mesopotamia" will usually be indexed under "Iraq." To browse such headings, they are in the four thick red volumes on the left side of the reference desk. They are also listed in the Library Catalog and in some of the subscription databases.  Some generic subheading terms include “Achaeology” and “Exctinct Cities”.  Some good specific terms include the name of a city (such as Angkor) or the name of a landmark (such as Macchu Picchu) For looking up ancient civilizations outside of the Americas Begin with the name of the current country or nation’s name (example: Iraq instead of Mesopotamia) Combine with a subheading term such as “Antiquities,” “Civilization,” “Economic Conditions,” History,” Politics and Government,” “Religion,” and “Social Life and Customs”

DigitalPro Shooter Volume 3, Issue 1, January 26, 2005 Welcome to DPS 3-1. We've been publishing DigitalPro Shooter for over 3 years, but wanted to mark the arrival of 2005 by offiically starting our 3rd volume with a special issue on Angkor Wat and the surrounding Cambodian temples. We have also got some great news about two new services of use to most photographers in our New Products section. Angkor Wat and the surrounding Angkor temple complex in Cambodia are without question one of the seven man made wonders of the world. Even after nearly 1000 years of neglect the dozens of spires and thousands of feet of intricate stone carvingall without the use of mortar or any machinesstand as a monument to what ancient civilizations were capable of. The art in photographing them is in culling out bite-size chunks from the overwhelming experience so that your camera can make sense of them. In this issue I'll take you through my recent trip there and give you some ideas on how to approach photographing Angkor or other similar ancient wonders.
Photographing the Magic of Angkor Wat
Angkor Wat Nikon D2H Ever since seeing a large model of Angkor Wat in Thailand and photos of it at the Smithsonian, it is been top on my list of "must see" locations. The security situation in Cambodia and the sheer logistics had made it difficult to get there, but it has never been easier to see one of the true wonders of the world so I was determined to make the effort on my most recent trip to Asia.

Angkor ceased to be a living city in 1431 when the Khmer abandoned it in face on constant attack from the Thai's. With time the ruins were all but swallowed up by dense jungle. An ancient civilization lost to nature. The popular myth but in fact Angkor was never lost as such, rather it became less and less accessible. It was still known locally as a place of pilgrimage, a vague memory in the minds of European missionaries. It is claimed that the last Kingdom was re-discovered by French naturalist Henri Mouhot in January 1860. Wether or not the Kingdom was ever lost remains a matter for debate but what is not in question is that the posthumous publishing of the accounts of Mouhot's travels did trigger European interest in Asia's single most remarkable archaeological site - The Temples of Angkor. Angkor Wat was built in the 12th century by Suryavarman II is the largest religious building in the world measuring at its base 1,500 metres by 1.300 metre. When one crosses the Naga bridge it appears as if there are just three towers. It is not until one has entered the inner courtyard that the other two are visible. It was originally built for worship to the Hindu gods. To the north stands the Bayon with 54 stone towers, each the face of Bodhisattva on each of the four sides and stands at the centre of Angkor Thom. It is surrounded by a moat and is approached at the four cardinal points through massive stone gates. Ta Prohm to the east of Angkor Thom is particularly fascinating as it is left as it was found with roots of the trees growing up though the masonry of the ancient temples.

The Kingdom of Cambodia is quickly becoming a top travel destination in Southeast Asia. Leaving behind a troubled past that saw foreign dominations, a genocide perpetrated by Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge, long years of civil war and political instability, the country seems to have finally come to terms with its past. Cambodia will welcome you with its legacy of an amazing ancient civilization (the ruins of Angkor in Siem Reap), art galleries and cafes in tree lined colonial Phnom Penh, and a wonderful countryside dotted with villages of wooden homes on stilts and lush rice fields. Tours in Siem Reap (Angkor Complex) The ruins of the ancient city of Angkor — the former capital of the Khmer kingdom — incorporate Hindu and Buddhist motifs and represent one of the world's most spectacular sights. The temples of Angkor represent six hundred years of Khmer civilization and one of Asia's greatest Kingdoms. This huge complex can be very difficult (and exhausting) to navigate independently. We provide expert local guides who know how to avoid the crowds and take you to the most interesting temples at the least crowded time of the day. Touring is by deluxe, air-conditioned cars (unless you prefer exploring the ruins by bicycle or elephant — both of which can be arranged!). Our clients have an exclusive, hassle-free experience at Angkor, using one of Siem Reap's luxury resorts such as the exclusive

Il stretched, then its apogee, up to the Thailand-Burma border in the West and Wat Phou of Laos in the North. It appeared owing to the ancient Khmer rulers who strengthened unity between peoples with a good political doctrine and the development of an intelligent irrigation system who allowed to control water of the Mekong River for agricultures and so to work out its prosperity. Then it were slowly deteriorated during five century. Of this Khmer Civilization, it left some fabulous and exceptionals monuments (like Angkor Wat and Bayon Khmers temples), some numerous sculptures.

Sunrise at Angkor Wat, Cambodia IN SEARCH OF THE BLACK PRESENCE IN CAMBODIA By RUNOKO RASHIDI DEDICATED TO THE GODFREY FAMILY I n regards to travel and lectures, 1999 was my most productive year to date. Internationally, in 1999, I lectured in Thailand, Hawaii, India, Russia, Trinidad, Venezuela and Guyana. The Ancestors were very good to me. It was wonderful set of experiences, and I frequently felt that I was in a kind of dream. All of this travel revolved around researching the African presence globally. All of my lectures were about who African people are, where we are, what we have done, and what we are doing. All along I felt that I was a sort of ambassador possessed of a strong sense of mission and purpose. THE BLACK PRESENCE IN CAMBODIA My last travel experience in 1999 took me to Thailand and Cambodia. In fact, Cambodia was the only country that I traveled to in 1999 where I didn't lecture. I went to Cambodia solely for research. My interest in the Cambodian kingdom of Angkor began in the mid-1970s when I came across John G. Jackson's powerful and informative volume

Maybe your first thought is of the magnificent ruins of Angkor Wat (and the lesser known, but no less impressive Angkor Thom and the Bayon). Walk amidst the renowned architecture of the 9th-13th centuries and learn about the fascinating history of one of the true wonders of the ancient world.
And if your mind associates Cambodia with its famous traditional dances, we will ensure that you will attend a memorable, intimate dance performance during your stay.
Finally, if you are a student of history, politics or world events, the Cambodia of yesterday still lives on in your mind and heart. That unspeakable era of human suffering under the Khmer Rouge over 20 years ago is commemorated by today's Cambodia at two deeply emotional memorials close to the capital city of Phnom Penh.
Cambodia is all of the above. Today's Cambodia is a complex land - a glorious ancient history, a ghastly recent history, finely skilled artisans, graceful dancers and, most of all, warm, friendly people who teach us all about the triumph of the human spirit.
Cambodia Highlights THE ANGKOR CIVILIZATION While books, films and photographs about Angkor abound, nothing will compare to the wondrous sensations that will flow through you as you enter the ruins of ancient Angkor for the first time.

Angkor Wat – Siem Reap, Cambodia Angkor Wat is the world’s biggest religious monument.  That statement alone should grab your attention, but the truth of the matter is that Angkor Wat needs to be seen to be believed.  The place is thoroughly imbued with a mythical miasma of history, religion, royalty, and worship.  It represents the height of an ancient civilization that once threatened the great Chinese empire. History The original temples at Angkor are believed to have been constructed beginning in the 9 th century A.D. by King Jayavarman II.  Throughout the following centuries, additional temples were created by his descendents and by various conquerors.  Angkor is only a reference to the temple complex that sprawls over 40 square miles around the village of Siem Reap in what is now Cambodia.  Angkor Wat is the most renowned of the temples as it is not just one temple, but also an entire complex of vast size. The ebb and flow of what is known as the Khmer Empire is somewhat difficult to grasp.  Southeast Asia (along with most of the world) was a turbulent place where Kings and Emperors could be deposed in a matter of years.  Long reigns of peace were often followed by brutal wars filled with strife and guile.
