I zzy Pludwinski is a professional calligrapher in both Hebrew calligraphy and English calligraphy. On this site you can view his works which touch on many fields: ketubo t, "fine-art" calligraphy , some commercial work , and most recently, a newly published limited edition book- Shir Hashirim - The Song of Songs , introducing a unique, lyrical Hebrew typeface he designed. He also offers a Hebrew Calligraphy Correspondence Course.
What his works have in common is a certain simplicity - the challenge of designing without reliance on illustration, underlying his belief in the power of the letters and words themselves, as expressed through pure calligraphy, to relate the emotional content of the text.

C hinese calligraphy is an art with an illustrious tradition as old as the culture itself. For nearly two thousand years the standards of excellence of the art have remained almost unchanged. Today, Chinese calligraphy is still considered an elegant art form not only in China, but in neighboring countries such as Japan and Korea as well.
A Brief History of Chinese Art
from the Museum Company
Chinese society has evolved without serious interruption since the Neolithic period, the only culture in the world to do so. As a result, a clearly defined "Chinese" art can be traced back 7,000 years.
During the Shang Dynasty (1750 to 1045 BC), which coincided with China's Bronze Age, sculptures and practical items made of bronze, like wine vessels with ornate decorations, made their first appearance. The Chinese developed a technique for bronze casting called piece-mold, which surpassed other casting methods of ancient civilizations, including the lost-wax process.
Calligraphy, arguably China's most important form of art, also emerged during the Bronze Age. Animal bones inscribed with "word pictures," called oracle bones, were used to tell the future. Someone would draw a question on a bone, and a shaman would heat the bone until it cracked, then "read" the answer according to the shape of the crack.

110. The Islamic World To 1600: The Arts, Learning, And Knowledge (Calligraphy)
An illustrated history from the Department of History, University of Calgary.
http://www.ucalgary.ca/applied_history/tutor/islam/learning/calligraphy.html
The Islamic World to 1600 From the Greek word for "beautiful writing," calligraphy was considered the highest art form in Islam, for several reasons. For one, Muslims believe that Allah used the Arabic language to recite the Qur'an to Muhammad, and for that reason, it has a spiritual meaning for Muslims. Also, using words as artistry avoided the problem of using pictorial images. Whereas decorative writing all but disappeared in Europe with the advent of the printing press, the Islamic world retained it as an art form long after the necessity of writing longhand was removed by modern technology. Calligraphy adorned architecture, decorative arts, coins, jewellery, textiles, weapons, tools, paintings, and manuscripts.

Welcome to Horace Mann's webpage on: Arabic Writing and Calligraphy Introduction: "Calligraphy" means "beautiful writing" (or writing as a form of art). During the Middle Ages, the Muslims respected calligraphy as the highest art form because the Qur'an was written in Arabic and it represented the word of God. So calligraphy decorated the mosques and holy books of Islam. Writing was not only an artistic expression, it was a religious expression as well. Over the centuries Arabic calligraphy expanded to include different styles of writing. Just like in English where there are many kinds of handwriting (printing, cursive, and even "graffiti style" writing), many respected writing styles in Arabic developed. I. The Arabic Alphabet There are 28 letters in the Arabic alphabet. Adapted from IslamicArt site They are read from right to left (but some single letters are written from left to right!). Here are some examples of how the letters are formed. Follow the arrows to form the letters: Note: the letters change shapes as they are connected in words depending on if they are written at the beginning, middle, or end of a word. Lessons in Calligraphy

When we speak of Turkish calligraphy, we refer to writing of aesthetic value in characters based on the Arabic script, which the Turks had adopted as their writing medium after their conversion to Islam. The Arabic characters gradually assumed an aesthetic function after the advent of Islam, and this process gathered momentum from the mid-eighth century onwards, so that calligraphy was already a significant art discipline by the time the Turks joined the Islamic world. Therefore it is necessary to begin with a brief review of the structure of Arabic characters and their development during the early centuries of Islam. The most succinct definition of calligraphy formulated by Islamic writers is, "Calligraphy is a spiritual geometry produced with material tools." The aesthetic values implied by this definition held true for centuries. Under this writing system most of the letters underwent a change of form according to whether they were positioned at the beginning, middle or end of a word. When transformed into an art the characters took on highly elaborate shapes, and the rich
