Today, Chinese calligraphy is still considered an elegant art form not only in China, but in neighboring countries such as Japan and Korea as well. A Brief History of Chinese Art from the Museum Company Chinese society has evolved without serious interruption since the Neolithic period, the only culture in the world to do so. As a result, a clearly defined "Chinese" art can be traced back 7,000 years. During the Shang Dynasty (1750 to 1045 BC), which coincided with China's Bronze Age, sculptures and practical items made of bronze, like wine vessels with ornate decorations, made their first appearance. The Chinese developed a technique for bronze casting called piece-mold, which surpassed other casting methods of ancient civilizations, including the lost-wax process. Calligraphy, arguably China's most important form of art, also emerged during the Bronze Age. Animal bones inscribed with "word pictures," called oracle bones, were used to tell the future. Someone would draw a question on a bone, and a shaman would heat the bone until it cracked, then "read" the answer according to the shape of the crack.
