Nihad Dukhan offers a modern interpretation of the art of Arabic calligraphy.

contemporary arabic calligraphy designs
Arabic calligraphy is the most typical expression of the Islamic spirit. The different classical styles of the Arabic letters offer unlimited possibilities to the artist. The contemporary designs presented here indirectly utilize these styles to create an abstract, yet readable representation of words and provide a postmodern interpretation of the letters. The intent is to cross barriers and touch other languages and cultures for it is said: "The written word is a talisman, and the process of writing is a magic connected not only with the master's technique and skill, but also with his spiritual and moral character." Nihad Dukhan is a Palestinian who grew up in Gaza, holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, and is an Associate Professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Puerto Rico. He was extensively trained in the classical styles of Arabic calligraphy. His work in this new form has been exhibited in New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, and San Francisco.

    Notes About This Exhibit
4.7 MB [Transcribed from the spoken words of Mohamed Zakariya] Writing basically consists of ordinary writing and calligraphic writing. Ordinary writing is what we normally use, it's what everybody uses in their daily life. Calligraphic writing is a specialty of writing whereby the writing is made into an art form. There is ordinary writing. There is what we would call the scribal tradition of writing, which is existing in all these cultures as well, which is the trained production by professionals of texts, whether they be government documents, books, tablets, anything which requires an individual who might be akin a little bit to a modern secretary or a modern printer, in a sense, to produce reading material. The Chinese and Japanese have a calligraphic tradition. The Hebrew culture has one. The Hebrew traditions often required the writings to be of a very permanent nature for the religious purposes and that meant works on parchment with a degree of penmanship that was consistent with total legibility and authenticity. That really is what we would call the scribal tradition in writing. The Islamic culture has one; the Latin and Greek cultures have one; the Armenian culture has one. It exists in many many forms. Now in the normal, well not normal, but in the cultures that have alphabets which are discrete, Hebrew, Latin, Armenian, Greek, the letters form little blocks that are not attached to each other.

    Chinese Calligraphy T
he history of Chinese calligraphy is as long as that of China itself. Calligraphy is one of the highest forms of Chinese art. In studying Chinese calligraphy one must learn something of the origins of Chinese language and of how they were originally written. However, except for those brought up in the artistic traditions of the country, its aesthetic significance seems to be very difficult to grasp. Chinese calligraphy serves the purpose of conveying thought but also shows the 'abstract' beauty of the line . Rhythm, line, and structure are more perfectly embodied in calligraphy than in painting or sculpture.
    A rtistic Characters and rules:
  • Every Chinese character is built up in its own square with variety of structure and composition. There are drawing of only three basic forms: the circle, the triangle, and the square. For each character there is a definite number of strokes and appointed positions for them in relation to the whole. No stroke may be added or deleted for decorative effect. Strict regularity is not required.

originals, except for minor modifications to enhance legibility and reproduction quality. The feel of the calligrapher's hand writing is maintained as much as possible, and the strokes originally produced by the reed pen are meticulously analyzed and reproduced, with full control over the quality of each line and the construction of each path. The result is artwork of very high quality and fine detail

irst, there is the Chinese brush . Though similar to the brush used for watercolor painting in the West, it has a finer tip suitable for dealing with a wide range of subjects and for producing the variations in line required by different styles. Since the materials used for calligraphy and painting are essentially the same, developments in calligraphic styles and techniques can also be used in painting.
Brush Techniques and Strokes T he ancients used the expression yu pi yu mo(to have brush, to have ink). These show the significance of the meaning for the two terms pi(brush) and mo(ink)
    • The brush techniques so much emphasized in Chinese painting include not only line drawing but also the stylized expressions of shade and texture (cunfa) and the dotting methods(dianfa) used mainly to differentiate trees and plants and also for simple embellishment.

Islamic Calligraphy from a Private Collection
Editor's note: This is one in a series of articles showing objects from a private collection of Islamic art. This article covers highlights of the calligraphy collection.
JB: Many of our readersmyself includedapproach these calligraphic works with little or no background knowledge. Could you please introduce us to the field of calligraphy?

AR: There are two key facts that will help you appreciate the elevated position of calligraphy in the Islamic world: First, specific depictions of the human form are considered sacrilege in Islam . Second, as you learned when we discussed the amulet portion of my collection, verses of the Holy Koran figure significantly in everyday Islamic life.
JB: So, you're suggesting that these factors focused much creative and artistic energy on the written word?

AR: Indeed. And the calligrapher , because he could both delight the eye and feed the soul, held an honored place in the culture . The value of calligraphy was such that it could be readily converted into currency: calligraphic panels traded for their weight in gold
    JB: Literally?

The images were created by blending extracts from the original documents marking the beginning and end of Hong Kong's colonial history, the Treaty of Nanking (or Nanjing as it is now called) of 1842, when China ceded Hong Kong 'in perpetuity' to Britain, and the Second Convention of Peking of 1898, when the area under British rule was extended by lease for 99 years. On June 30th 1997, the date of the Hong Kong Handover, that lease expired, the British renounced all claims to the territory and Hong Kong was handed back to China. This series of work pays tribute to Hong Kong's heritage and explores the surprisingly harmonious mixture of signatures, seals and the individual cultural mores which shine through every page of the legal documents as an unwitting expression of Hong Kong's rich multi-cultural legacy, both British and Chinese. Through the fusion of images, textures, colours and tones, the artist has created a truly dynamic series of pieces. Pat has blended individual elements from the
