Easier calligraphy is the art of making beautiful or elegant handwriting. Harder - The word calligraphy literally means beautiful writing.

The Topic:
Calligraphy
Easier - Calligraphy is the art of making beautiful or elegant handwriting. It is a fine art of skilled penmanship. Harder - The word calligraphy literally means beautiful writing. Before the invention of the printing press some 500 years ago, it was the way books were made. Each copy was handwritten out by a scribe working in a scriptorium. The hand writing was done with quill and ink onto materials like vellum or parchment. The lettering style applied was one of the period bookhands like rustic, carolingian, blackletter, etc. Today, there are three main types or styles of calligraphy: (1) Western or Roman, (2) Arabic, and (3) Chinese or Oriental. This project focuses mainly on Western calligraphy with a glimpse at the other two styles. Calligraphy, Lettering and Typeface Design

"In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, Most Merciful", done in the shape of a pear The same in the shape of a bird A man seated in prayer. His body is formed from the words of the shahadah: "I bear witness that there is no god but God and that Muhammad is his Messenger." This verse is replicated twice in mirror image. Welcome to the Connected Globe Japanese Calligraphy Site. This site will be bringing the beauty and fascination of Japanese Calligraphy to the world-wide audience of the World Wide Web. If you know nothing of Japanese Calligraphy then we hope that these pages will bring you an understanding and appreciation of this wonderful art form. If you are already a lover of calligraphy, we hope to bring you new works, in both classical and contemporary styles and we welcome your comments and feed-back. And if you appreciate superb technique in western art I suggest a visit to the pages of Aurelio Ródriguez López We begin with a brief introduction to Calligraphy that we hope will help those who are discovering this art for the first time. We also have an excellent on-line Calligraphy shop where you can buy books on calligraphy and Japanese calligraphy sets (they make great gifts). Next, we are fortunate to be able to present the work of the Japanese Calligrapher Mukon Ohmori. We had the honour during 1994 to present an exhibition of the works of Mukon Ohmori at The Galleries in London. Mukon Ohmori and his charming wife attended the opening of the exhibition, much to the delight of the many visitors. His opening speech tells us a great deal about the work.

Welcome to the medieval calligraphy Website. The site was developed for a class project for the Survey of Publishing course at Harvard University's Extension School. Calligraphy is one of the most beautiful and expressive methods with which to ornament a written word. The art dates back to around the 1st century, when the Romans first adapted the Greek alphabet to fit their own needs. Using a broad nib (the point of a sharpened quill), the Romans created the first letters in calligraphy, and the art flourished until the 15th century, when the printing presses were created. Introduction to appreciation of Chinese calligraphy, showing various styles ofwriting a single Chinese word.
    http://www.chinapage.org/calligraphy.html
    Appreciation of
    The Art of Chinese Calligraphy
Go to Calligraphy's Home Page Calligraphy is an art dating back to the earliest day of history, and widely practiced throughout China to this day. Although it uses Chinese words as its vehicle of expression, one does not have to know Chinese to appreciate its beauty. Because in essence, Calligraphy is an abstract art. While viewing a Western abstract painting, one does not ask, "What is it?" When viewing Chinese calligraphy, one need not ask, "What is the Chinese word?"
In this page, we selected single words from the works of many master calligraphers from the past to illustrate the astounding beauty of the art. Like all art, it is best to simply look at them for enjoyment. Do not be sidetracked with questions of theory, technique, etc. Do not worry about "What is it?"
Beside each work, a very short comment is given to describe its "style", based on the classical book of Tu Meng. Tu Meng of the Tang dynasty (618-905) developed 120 expressions to describe different styles of calligraphy and establish criteria for them. The first 15 from his list, with explanations and English interpretations by Chiang Yee:
  • ability, mysterious, careful, carefree, balance

    http://www.zakariya.net/home.html
The Art, History, and Practice of Islamic Calligraphy Yesari Mehmed Es'ad Efendi (d. 1798) to one of his calligraphy students What is Islamic art? Customarily, the answers range from the astute to the ludicrous. I would like to use this space to add my own observations to the stew and see how it tastes. (Perhaps a bit more salty?) Although I approach the issue via calligraphy and its associated arts, I want to keep the bigger questions in the near background, out of sight but not out of mind. What is Islamic art? What is Islamic about it? Is it art, and in what sense? Such questions are meaningless unless we define our terminology. Therefore, in the History and Development section of this site, I give a lot of attention to translating the key technical words and concepts of Islamic calligraphy, especially the jargon of the artists, which can seem a bit impenetrable. This section also includes examples of scripts.
