Persian Calligraphy Prayer niche in the Friday Mosque, Isfahan - Built by Oljeitu in 1310. The Arabic script was adopted in Iran quite soon after the Islamic conquest of AD 642, largely because it was the official script of the new state into which Iran was incorporated. Calligraphy is the highest art form of the Islamic civilization, and like all forms of art that came into contact with Iran, it was enhanced and developed by the Persians. It was practised not only by professional calligraphers, but also by princes and nobles themselves. Calligraphers were an essential requirement for any self-respecting court, both to instruct the prince's children in the principles of the art and to produce manuscripts for the royal library. Under the Timurids and the Safavids , calligraphy experienced perhaps its most brilliant development. In the late 14 th century Umar Aqta "with amputated hand", wrote a miniature Koran for Timur, which was so small that it could be fitted under the socket of a signet ring. When Timur disapproved of it because, according to a Prophetic tradition the Word of God should be written in big letters, the calligrapher produced another copy in which each was a cubit in length.

Welcome Chinese Calligraphy Japanese Calligraphy Korean Calligraphy
is an art dating back to the earliest day of history and is, to this day, widely practiced throughout China and many parts of Asia. The neighboring countries of Japan, Korea, Taiwan and other Southeast Asian countries have all made the Chinese calligraphy system part of their own respective cultures. Kanji in Japanese and Han Mun in Korean are both names for essentially the same system of Chinese calligraphy writing. Even though Japan and Korea have since developed their own unique system of writing, both countries still use Chinese calligraphy as the traditional form of communication for many occasions. At Green Dragon Arts we make no distinctions between the Chinese calligraphy writing system, Kanji and Han Mun. The spectrum of the Chinese language, with its many subtle shades has made it a natural vehicle of expression for calligraphic art. One does not have to know Chinese to appreciate the beauty of Chinese calligraphy. This is because in essence, Calligraphy is an art; an art that combines the expression of literature with the expression of ink. A famous Chinese Calligrapher, Tu Meng of the Tang dynasty (618-905) developed 120 expressions to describe different styles of calligraphy and establish criteria for them. Like the many styles of painting, each calligraphic style was appreciated in its own right. Calligraphers were known by their interpretation of a style or styles, and as you can imagine, the boundaries of the styles are not always distinct.

How to Order ... About the Artist
Shalom and Welcome to Ketubot by Naomi!
For 2000 years, the Ketubah, a Jewish marriage contract, has been a living, vibrant document, marking the joyous occasion of a wedding and the establishment of a new family. The original text, which for centuries served as legal protection in time of trouble, is still in use today, though new, egalitarian texts have been developed to reflect the attitudes and customs of our modern era. From a mostly formal, legal document, the Ketubah has become a more celebratory piece of Jewish art. My Ketubot (plural of Ketubah, i.e. Ketubahs) celebrate love, romance, home, Jewish heritage and our connection to the land of Israel by using strong, vivid colors and intricate designs, rich with detail. Landscapes, architecture, decorative patterns, fruit trees, flowers and animals illuminate the text and express my love for Nature, Art, Jewish tradition and the beauty of my homeland, Israel. I do my own calligraphy to match the printed text and preserve its integrity, and I enjoy working closely with my customers on the text, sharing in the excitement of the upcoming wedding and assuring that the Ketubah is correct according to tradition in every detail. Don’t hesitate to call me and discuss any detail or question you have. It will be my pleasure and privilege to work with you and make my art a part of your joyful day.

F ounded in 1976, the Washington Calligraphers Guild is a nonprofit organization of approximately 500 American and international lettering artists of all skill levels, from professional scribes to enthusiastic beginners and even some non-calligraphers who appreciate the lettering and book arts. T he word calligraphy comes from the Greek kalli meaning beautiful and graphia referring to writing, and calligraphers today still emulate the beautiful letterforms of scribes throughout the centuries. Even in an age of computer-generated type, this ancient craft is flourishing, but it is also evolving. Calligraphy is now a respected visual art, the creative expression of the written word.
