California School Shooting Proves Need For Armed Guards In Schools
by

Shortly after the most recent shooting at a California school, Sarah Brady, the head of Handgun Control, issued a statement trashing Attorney General John Ashcroft because, among other things, he did not take the "gun lobby" to task "for promoting the idea that guns make you safer and that guns are a vital form of protection for America's families." She also said it is "a tragedy" when leaders such as the Attorney General ignore "preventing children's access to guns." But, what is a real tragedy is Brady's adamant, ignorant and dangerous refusal to acknowledge that, in certain circumstances, guns do make things safer. A case in point, ironically, is the very shooting which prompted Brady's absurd attack on Attorney General Ashcroft. According to the New York Times (3/24/2001), it was a man with a gun a veteran police officer, Richard Agundez, Jr. who prevented what could have been a mass slaughter at Granite Hills High School in El Cajon, California. As the Times reports it, Agundez, when he heard shots, "raced out with his weapon drawn and fired at Mr. [Jason] Hoffman five times, wounding him in the mouth and buttocks and apparently hitting and disabling his shotgun. Mr. Hoffman turned and ran, but fell about 20 yards away, near his truck. He had a .22-caliber pistol tucked in his waistband, the authorities said, but never fired it."

San Juan Elementary Schools Show Steady Growth on Standards Test
  • Deidra Powell-Williams, Director of Information and Communication Published August 16, 2004
San Juan continues to show strong performance in elementary mathematics, while English-language art scores show improvement over the past three years. Last year the language-arts scores remained stable with grades five, six, seven, and nine showing significant growth over the 2002 scores. Overall, San Juan spring 2004 student achievement levels are an indication that the District is moving in the right direction in regards to developing an educational plan that addresses the results of the California Standards Tests. The District's operational goals and results from the test will be addressed in the school site plans in an effort to improve student achievement overall. "We need to accelerate our focus on effective instructional practices. We need to ensure that we are teaching standards-based instruction in every classroom," said Superintendent of Schools General Davie Jr., Ed.D.
San Juan District's Instructional Goals
  • Build a collaborative culture at school sites and across the District which focuses on student learning and evidence of learning results.

In California, a missing person is someone whose whereabouts is unknown to the reporting party. This includes any child who may have run away, been taken involuntary or may be in need of assistance. It includes a child illegally taken, held or hidden by a parent or non-parent family member (See California Penal Code Sections 277-280 There is NO waiting period for reporting a person missing. All California police and sheriffs' departments must accept any report, including a report by telephone, of a missing person, including runaways, without delay and will give priority to the handling of the report. Schools are part of the network to help find missing children, not only through notices required to be given to a public school district or private school within 10 days of a child's disappearance but also through use of our Missing Person Bulletin. By making photographs of missing persons available, we seek to aid in the identification and recovery of missing persons. According to the

    The 2005-06 Budget is Done!

The Budget approved July 11th contains few additional dollars for education beyond the total dollar amount proposed by the Governor back in January, augmented only slightly for increases in federal funds and other revenue adjustments. GATE is funded at $46 million, including recognition of .69% growth and a 4.23% COLA. Per pupil spending The Governor touts a K-12 per-pupil spending amount of $10,325 from all sources. However, you are cautioned by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell that the number actually includes a lot of money that never goes to classrooms, including $50 million for the State Library and $38 million for the Commission on Teacher Credentialing, as well as locally raised tax revenues for schools. The Governor estimates the actual Proposition 98 per-pupil funding to be $7,402 in 2005-06, a $395 increase from last year. The budget exceeds the newly benched Proposition 98 minimum funding level by over $740.9 million for this year and contributes over 40% of the General Fund to K-12 education.
