Parent Teacher Organization Home How to Work From Home with Young Children
Many mothers and fathers find that the financial demands of a family requires two incomes. However, when the cost of child care combined with transportation and other necessities of work end up voiding the financial benefits, some parents decide that the best way to make ends meet is to care for their own children while working from home.
Taking this step has both benefits and drawbacks. How are they best handled so that all responsibilities are met and you and your children are happy?
Have a Schedule
Creating a schedule for your workday is important in balancing the limited time available for work and children. Your children may not have all your attention all the time, but setting aside regular intervals of dedicated time for them will make your day, and their's, more pleasant.
When planning your time, use it wisely. For instance, making meals could be done quicker if you do it yourself, but it will become an activity and entertainment to your pre-schooler if they are involved. Using evening, early morning and nap time for work is also wise.
Your children will accept their 'free time' without you more readily if they know that they do not have to pry you from your work to get attention. Using intervals of time for them will assure your children of your interest and love while enabling you to complete work as undistracted as possible.

PRAA Report of October meeting
Submitted by: Joan Nurge, Irvington High School PRAA Representative. The PRAA met again in October. Although there was only a small turnout, several issues were discussed, including character education, the weight and size of backpacks, dress codes and PRAA representation from schools.
Character Education
Although the School Board report on the district character education program had been scheduled for the Oct. 27 Board meeting, but had been postponed until Nov. 10. It was noted that evidence of character education programs at some schools has been seen in some schools with very positive response by the parents.
Instructional Materials
The group discussed the volume and weight of books and other materials, equipment and supplies that students are required to carry in backpacks. We considered the possibilities of parents buying textbooks for home use and developing a used book exchange to minimize the expense of keeping sets of textbooks at home. We also discussed the need for more instructional materials to be made available on-line or through more portable media such as CD's. A request was made for a representative from the district Instructional Materials Center attend a future PRAA meeting to discuss what options might be

It is a given that the new certification process would have to maintain the current high standards of excellence, integrity, and ethical conduct of both professions, and would have to meet or exceed international standards and the requirements of our international reciprocity and mutual recognition agreements. Both parties are agreed on these principles. Members who have been involved as volunteers in the current certification process and our education management and staff are confident that such a model could be developed and be attractive to prospective students and employers. top 100 business schools [Filed with the Office of the Federal Register, 8:45 am., March 25, 2002] top business schools 3. Such changes can happen more or less quickly and more or less rationally. On the irrational side, Kernan recounts how in the spring of 1970 Yales campus was filled with mania over the upcoming trial of Bobby Seale for the murder of a fellow Black Panther. Though the university had no connection to the case, a number of prominent activists, including Jerry Rubin and Abbie Hoffman, urged Yale students to violent revolutionary action, and the school quickly became embroiled in the trials larger racial dynamics. Yales black faculty members, whom Kernan suggests were rightly less interested in Bobby Seales fate than in their own, took advantage of the charged situation to present the administration with a list of demands for some very practical things: more tenure slots for black faculty and more money for African-American projects.

SARC BITE 30 DECEMBER 21, 2005 Dense SARCS May Leave Your Public Puzzled and Perturbed You may find it frustrating to create your schools' SARCs. There is so much to compile, so many new facts to report, so many data revisions to include But however exasperated you may be, the parents on the receiving end of these reports may, at best, be puzzled and perturbed. At worst, they may suspect that you are hiding something, deliberately misleading them by burying meaningful measures in a deluge of detail. How do I know? I've just returned from two conferences with directors of Parent Information Resource Centers, or PIRCs, as they are known on the circuit. I was invited to present by the U.S. Department of Education, the sponsor of the conferences. I listened to experienced, school-smart parent leaders tell me of their travails attempting to make sense of basic vital signs about a school's health, using school accountability reports. Three of these parent leaders were from California, and the other 42 represented most of the states in the union. (There are more than 70 PIRCs across the county.) Of the bunch, only the PIRC leader from Colorado was satisfied with the clarity and usability of her state's reports. The rest expressed dismay, disappointment, and anger at the obtuse and obscure ways that their state leadership reports results.

8. DISTRIBUCIÓN Y VENTA.

Parents Tune In to School Radio
Talk to administrators about critical goals and you'll find communications with parents high on their list. But what's the best way to reach parents? Often important notices given to middle or high school students never get home to parents, who no longer make checking their children's backpacks a daily habit. SchoolCast FM helps schools solve the communications-with-parents-problem. The small FM radio station provides everything a school needs to get daily messages on the air and requires no FCC license. Included: Education World spoke with principals whose schools use SchoolCast FM!

  • NCLB: The Dangers of Centralized Education Policy, Executive Summary by Lawrence A. Uzzell, Cato Institute, Policy Analysis no. 544 May 31, 2005. "The NCLB statute is a reform strategy at war with itself. It virtually guarantees massive evasion of its own intent, ordering state education agencies to do things that they mostly don't want to do. Washington will be forced either to allow the states great leeway in how they implement NCLB or to make NCLB more detailed, prescriptive, and top-heavy. If Washington chooses the former, the statute might as well not exist; if the latter, federal policymakers will increasingly resemble Soviet central planners trying to improve economic performance by micromanaging decisions from Moscow. NCLB may end up giving us the worst possible scenario: unconstitutional consolidation of power in Washington over the schools, with that power being used to promote mediocrity rather than excellence."

What I Know Now
Be Cool. Chill Out. Refrigerate Promptly. F or decades, product sales have reigned as the fundraising method of choice for most small non-profit organizations. However, the choice of products available to the fundraising chairperson today has grown exponentially, reading like a What's What in consumer goods. In fundraising drives across the country, the ever-popular candy, magazines and wrapping paper are found alongside everything from non-perishable cheese and sausage to light bulbs, birdseed, fresh fruit, tee shirts and scads of gift items. Now refrigerated and frozen foods - from pizza and cheesecakes to cookie dough - are gaining popularity in the parade of products sold for fundraising purposes. These products bring with them a whole new set of distribution and handling considerations. As a fundraising decision-maker, your primary goal, of course, is to conduct a smooth, profitable fundraiser. But don't lose sight of the fact that the foods sold through a fundraising drive are still intended for people to eat and enjoy, safely. "There's a misperception that foods sold for fundraising purposes are indestructible," reports Jim Messina, a New Jersey-based supplier of frozen foods for the fundraising market. According to Messina and others in the business of manufacturing and distributing frozen cookie dough, cheesecakes, pizzas and other frozen food items, the parameters for preserving these increasingly popular fundraising items are no different from products purchased from the grocer. Tom Lundeen, another frozen food supplier based in Iowa agrees, "When you buy ice cream at the corner supermarket, you don't leave it in the trunk for two days."

How am I ever going to get the time to take down that tree and get rid of the poison ivy along the cabins, put up wood duck boxes, sink new brush in the lake for the fish habitat, paint the edges of the miniature golf course, and redo the orienteering course. PLUS, now we need a new foot bridge across the creek, a platform on the water by the campfire ring, and dozens of bat boxes. Since we lost so many trees from last year's ice storms, our bats have lost their natural homes. Does this sound like your camp? Two challenges face most camps todayfunding and time. Where do you get the needed money to maintain and improve your aging facility? Many nonprofit camps depend upon donations to help keep the camp afloat. If your camp is like many that I have visited this year, then your camp donations are down. A great way to overcome declining cash contributions is to develop project partnerships.
