Our primary activity is to convene an annual colloquium highlighting a significant problem or issue that merits sustained interdisciplinary research and/or extension efforts. The colloquium incubates new research and extension collaborations, and meaningful relations with external clients and experts. It also enhances the integration of DANR personnel and programs as they interface with community problems. The workgroup will communicate research and extension activities to internal and external audiences, using the publication and dissemination vehicles already in place through the California Communities Program (CCP), including the California Community Topics series of topical briefs, the

SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM (SFSP)
Also available as PDF This paper is part of a series of nutrition policy profiles prepared by Prevention Institute for the Center for Health Improvement (CHI). Background The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is a federally funded child nutrition program that provides low-income children with free, nutritious meals during summer and holiday breaks. Schools operating on a year-round academic calendar also use the SFSP to offer meals during off-track periods. During the school year, 15.3 million U.S. children rely on free or reduced-price school meals to meet their daily nutritional needs. When the school doors close for vacation, these children can be left without a reliable source of food. The SFSP is designed to fill this gap, providing a third of the recommended daily allowance of key nutrients. The SFSP served more than 2.2 million children at over 29,000 sites nationwide in 1998, and in California it served an average of 185,689 children each day. Though California increased usage of the SFSP by 55.6 percent between 1990 and 1999, the SFSP remains severely underutilized. Nationwide, approximately 16 percent of children who were enrolled in free and reduced-price lunch programs during the school year also participated in the SFSP;

ABSTRACT
It J Am Diet Assoc
POSITION STATEMENT
It is the position of the American Dietetic Association, the Society for Nutrition Education, and the American School Food Service Association that comprehensive nutrition services must be provided to all of the nation's preschool through grade twelve students. These nutrition services shall be integrated with a coordinated, comprehensive school health program and implemented through a school nutrition policy. The policy should link comprehensive, sequential nutrition education; access to and promotion of child nutrition programs providing nutritious meals and snacks in the school environment; and family, community, and health services' partnerships supporting positive health outcomes for all children. #
Environment
The American Dietetic Association (ADA), the Society for Nutrition Education (SNE), and the American School Food Service Association (ASFSA) recognize the importance of school-based nutrition services, including policies that link nutrition education, child nutrition programs, a healthy school environment, and community involvement promoting healthful eating and physical activity. Healthy People 2010 selected overweight and obesity as a leading health indicator of many preventable causes of death . The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2000 support recommendations for a healthy weight and physical activity each day

National 5 A Day for Better Health Program
The 5 A Day for Better Health program is the nation's largest public-private fruit and vegetable nutrition education initiative with 5 A Day coordinators in each state, territory, and the military. The 5 A Day program is guided by the National 5 A Day Partnership consisting of founding program co-sponsors Produce for Better Health Foundation and the National Cancer Institute along with government agencies, non-profit organizations, and industry working in collaboration to expand 5 A Day efforts to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables for improved public health.
Better Health - It's sweeping the nation!
The prototype for the 5 A Day program originated in the California Department of Health Services in 1988 with a National Cancer Institute grant for the purpose of conducting cancer prevention and cancer control programs. The program's overwhelming success in California triggered the launch of a national 5 A Day program in 1991 and the founding of the Produce for Better Health Foundation. The Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to be the catalyst for creating a healthier America through increased consumption of a variety of fruits and vegetables and is also chair of the National 5 A Day Partnership. To boost the effort to move more fruits and vegetables onto Americans' plates, the Foundation developed the

Welcome Teachers!
From a very early age, children are bombarded with conflicting messages about nutrition, health and body images. At one end of the scale, we have very youngand slendergirls literally starving themselves. While the other side of their "can we supersize that?" generation has itself become supersized. That problem, in fact, is so critical that the Surgeon General recently called childhood obesity "an epidemic."
Oliville!
Where kids learn about nutrition. A great game with a fun cast of characters, and lots to learn about making healthy food choices. Drop by Oliville today!
Our goal is to provide a fun and informative source of nutritional information , which helps children learn to weigh their food decisions and balance their choices. It's pretty obvious that French fries and sodas will continue to play a role, but hopefully leafy greens and monounsaturated fats will also get a share.

who we are N utritional Counseling Nutrition counseling consists of a series of consultations, in person or on the phone. After a clinical evaluation and assessment of your health history, Dr. Thompson creates a personalized health program for you and/or your family. This consists of a precise, yet flexible, arrangement of foods, food supplements, and suggestions for vital therapies and lifestyle habits that result in allowing the normal functioning of the body to take place. When this balance is achieved, health vitality and well-being are the result, and sickness and disease are dismissed.
Why is this so important?
We are creatures of habit. Our habits determine our levels of health and well-being and these, in turn, determine the quality and length of our lives. Knowing the differences between habits that are beneficial to health, habits that are offending, and why , are the most important things you and your children will ever learn.

Educating Students for the Real World of Occupational and Environmental Health Protecting health and safety on the job and in the community is a persistent national problem. The workplace statistics alone are stark: Every day an average of 9,000 U.S. workers sustain disabling injuries on the job, 16 workers die from a workplace injury, and another 137 die from work-related illness. That’s nearly 56,000 lives lost annually, and more than three million disabling work injuries each year, costing an estimated $171 billion annually in direct and indirect costs. Still, the U.S. lacks health care professionals with expertise in occupational and environmental health. COEH helps address this shortage by training occupational and environmental health specialists for careers in industry, universities, and government.

L.A. Farmers' Markets Go High-Tech to Promote Fruit and Vegetable Consumption LOS ANGELES-.-04/28/2004 Addition of Food Stamp's EBT at L.A. County Certified Farmers' Markets Improves Access for Recipients of Food Assistance A consortium of Los Angeles County certified farmers' markets announced today that 22 farmers' markets throughout L.A. County will begin accepting Food Stamp Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards, also known as the Golden State Advantage Card, as a convenient method of payment. The effort is part of a statewide campaign to improve health through nutrition education and lifestyle changes, particularly among socioeconomic and ethnic groups that suffer disproportionate rates of hunger, obesity and chronic disease. "We know that families in poor neighborhoods throughout L.A. County often have trouble buying fresh fruits and vegetables because of a lack of grocery stores," said Pompea Smith, CEO of Sustainable Economic Enterprises-Los Angeles and director of the Hollywood Farmers' Market. "Most farmers' markets have traditionally accepted food stamps, but this new technology presented a unique challenge to the cash-only markets, which lack access to electricity and phone lines. Overcoming this obstacle, with the help of state and county Departments of Social Services and community advocates, allows markets to continue the work of providing fresh fruits and vegetables to all income levels."
