Nutrition services provide a vital link in maintaining the health of older Californians by preventing premature institutionalization and improving their overall quality of life. The California Department of Aging administers nutrition services funded by the federal Older Americans Act and state general fund dollars through the network of Area Agencies on Aging and their service providers. They serve Californians 60 years of age or older, with preference given to those in greatest economic or social need and to low-income multi-ethnic individuals. Participants are provided an opportunity to contribute to the cost of the meal. Meals must meet nutritional standards by providing a minimum of one-third of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA).
  • Title III C-1: Congregate Nutrition Services provide meals in a group setting. Services also include nutrition and health promotion education, and opportunities for socialization. People eligible for Title III C-1 nutrition services are 60 years of age or older, individuals with a handicap or disability who meet specific criteria, spouses of eligible participants regardless of age, and volunteers who provide needed services during meal hours. Project facilities and operations conform to health and safety standards and provide safe, wholesome and nutritious meal services to our older clients.

Health Care, Nutrition, and Goal One. ERIC Digest.
In April, 1993, President Clinton sent to congress the Goals 2000: Educate America Act, which embraces the objectives of Goal One of the six national education goals. Goal One states that "By the year 2000, all children in America will start school ready to learn." One of the objectives formulated to meet this goal asserts that "Children will receive the nutrition and health care needed to arrive at school with healthy minds and bodies." Problems which can affect children's later development and school readiness include lack of prenatal care, low birth weight, maternal substance abuse, malnutrition, vaccine-preventable diseases, sensory impairments, high blood lead levels, and anemia. Efforts to promote children's health and nutrition, and to prevent children's illness, include federal and state programs, and initiatives to serve preschool children in health care settings, in preschool programs, and in community settings. These efforts address prenatal care, health and nutrition of the developing child, parent education, preschool teacher education, and health and nutrition instruction for preschool children.
FEDERAL AND STATE PROGRAMS
Many of the federal programs profiled above are administered by states, or are jointly funded with federal and state monies. Several states have launched efforts of their own to serve preschoolers' health and nutrition needs. The Kentucky Education Reform Act of 1990 authorized the establishment of family service centers in many of the state's school districts. Project Healthy Start in Hawaii consists of one-stop service centers located throughout the state to serve children and families at risk (Boyer, 1991). As part of Project Network of the Mississippi State Department of Health, nutritionists provide support and technical assistance to caregivers; develop education materials; and develop and implement community-based educational projects for nutrition students and health professionals (Ford, 1991).

Physical Activity and Nutrition Updated November 2003
Physical inactivity and unhealthy eating are behaviors that often have an adverse impact on health. Together they are responsible for at least 300,000 preventable deaths each year. Regular physical activity provides short-term benefits, such as alleviating symptoms of anxiety and depression, and reduces long-term risks for disability and premature death. Despite the proven benefits of being physically active, more than 60 percent of American adults do not engage in levels of physical activity necessary to provide health benefits ( see physical activity postcard ). Good nutrition also lowers a person's risk for many chronic diseases. However, a considerable gap remains between recommended dietary patterns and what Americans actually eat. Only about one-fourth of U.S. adults eat the recommended five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. (" Physical Activity and Good Nutrition: Essential Elements to Prevent Chronic Diseases and Obesity , CDC National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.")

The Human Nutrition and Food Science Department offers two Bachelor of Science degree programs that prepare students for challenging and rewarding careers and provide a strong academic background for graduate study and research. The effect of nutrition on health promotion and disease prevention, as well as food safety, is of much national concern. Four of the top ten causes of death in U.S. adults are linked to diet. Southern California is a major food industry center as well as a leader in public health institutions. There are many opportunities for internships, field trips, guest speakers, and jobs for our students. Cal Poly Pomona is a university founded on the principle of "learn by doing." The curriculum, facilities, and faculty reflect a commitment to a strong, up-to-date, science-based program that provides the types of skills and knowledge needed by graduates to meet professional goals. The mission vision is that graduates will significantly impact on the health and well-being of members of society.

You Can Help Disaster Relief From Hurricane Katrina
The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) has launched a national campaign to assist park and recreation agencies, staff and communities suffering damages inflicted by Hurricane Katrina. While damage in the hardest hit areas of Louisiana and Mississippi, Alabama and Florida are still being assessed, NRPA is rallying for donations of cash and volunteerism to offer immediate disaster relief and future recovery assistance.
Your donation of cash, equipment or in-kind assistance, whether immediate or in the near future, will be received by NRPA and connected with communities in greatest need. As specific requirements are more clearly defined by the affected agencies, NRPA will partner with state park and recreation associations, local agencies and public officials to distribute 100% of the donations received. Examples of how donations may be applied include provision of temporary housing, food, water and utilities for park and recreation professionals; clean-up campaigns; recreation relief efforts; damage assessment; rebuild and restoration efforts and more. Programs give undergraduate research training priority by selecting approximately 75% undergraduate participants out of at least ten participants per year. It is suggested that undergraduate participants have completed approximately two years of coursework in a major related to biomedical or behavioral science, a minimum GPA of 3.0 and/or show other evidence of exceptional scientific interest and talent. Previous undergraduate research experience is recommended before entering the MIRT program. The duration of the undergraduate training abroad is ten to twelve weeks.

NUTRITION AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Good nutrition and regular physical activity are fundamental to healthy living. According to the National Institutes of Health, sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy eating are linked to an increased risk of more than 20 physical ailments as well as a number of psychological problems. Specifically, poor eating and activity habits are major contributors to cancer, coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and stroke. Even though doctors and nurses may routinely provide their patients with nutrition education, according to the Journal of Pediatric Nursing "this short exchange of nutrition education is not sufficient to treat nor prevent such a complex and multi-factorial condition." Physical activity and nutrition are complex behaviors that are inextricably linked to the environments in which we live, work and play.. While education is one part of the solution, community-level interventions to improve the environments where people make choices about what to eat or how to get active are essential to improving overall health and well-being. Prevention Institute views poor physical activity and eating habits not primarily a result of individual choices and behaviors, but rather the result of living in an environment that does not support making healthier choices. We focus our efforts on identifying ways to improve community environments (e.g., community design, access to parks and safe public facilities), increase accountability among government and industries involved in food systems (e.g., use of public funds, sustainability, and marketing practices), and encourage media responsibility to support healthy behaviors through changes in policy and organizational practices.
