Vets groups slam review of combat stress cases
Sept. 19 (UNION-TRIBUNE)
A government review of 72,000 post-traumatic stress disorder cases planned for early next year is an excuse to cut benefits for older veterans and toughen qualifications for future ones, veterans groups and other critics contend. The Department of Veterans Affairs intends to examine cases from 1999 to 2004 in which 100 percent disability benefits were granted primarily for combat stress. The process is expected to last about a year.

New Emmy Attire: Camouflage?
by Mark Armstrong

Oct 10, 2001, 10:15 AM PT
What to do when your Emmy Awards are preempted by U.S. military strikes? Strap on the camouflage and head to the nearest Army base. That's apparently one idea making the rounds following Sunday's second cancellation of the 53rd Annual Prime-Time Emmy Awards . Despite early talk of scaling back or eliminating the ceremony, Emmy organizers are reportedly plotting a third attempt, with one option being to hold the show at a California military base. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is reportedly contemplating plans to reschedule CBS' Emmycast for November sweeps, but one major sticking point has been finding an auditorium that's not already booked. a d v e r t i s e m e n t
According to the Associated Press, it's unlikely the show will be restaged at the original location, the Shrine Auditorium. Another option was the old home of the Emmys, the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, but there were worries that its 3,000-seat capacity wouldn't be big enough. Other ideas have included taping a low-key ceremony and airing it later, or holding the show at a smaller venue, like a hotel ballroom. Then there's the latest idea, which could even turn the Emmys into a USO-style show to entertain the troops.

NEW BLUE RIBBON COMMISSION TO ESTIMATE COST OF "DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL"
Commission Includes Distinguished Military Experts, Former Senior Officials
For Immediate Release
SANTA BARBARA, CA 23 March 2005 - In response to the release of a GAO study titled, "Financial Costs And Loss Of Critical Skills Due to DOD's Homosexual Conduct Policy Cannot Be Completely Estimated," a Blue Ribbon Commission has been assembled to attempt to estimate the financial costs of "don't ask, don't tell." The GAO report was requested by Congressman Marty Meehan (D-Mass), a member of the House Armed Services Committee who recently introduced legislation to repeal "don't ask, don't tell." The new Blue Ribbon Commission is made up of distinguished experts including former Secretary of Defense William J. Perry, professors from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and the Naval Postgraduate School, and a former Assistant Secretary of Defense. It is being organized by the Center for the Study of Sexual Minorities in the Military at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The Commission's mission is to ascertain whether the GAO's cost estimate was correctly stated, and to estimate several costs including legal, investigative, and lost-training costs that appear not to have been included in the GAO report. It will then issue its own report, which is expected in six months, that includes these costs in the estimation of the total financial cost of "don't ask, don't tell."

Air Force officer disciplined for saying Bush allowed September 11 attacks
Hijacker attended US military school
By Jerry Isaacs 21 June 2002 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author Universally ignored by the press, however, was that the officer was not merely expressing a personal opinion. He was in a position to have direct knowledge of contacts between the US military and some of the hijackers in the period before the terrorist attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center and damaged the Pentagon. Lieutenant Colonel Butler, who wrote in a letter to the editor of the Monterey County Herald In his May 26 letter to the newspaper, Butler responded to Bush supporters, who had written the paper opposing the congressional investigation into the September 11 events. He wrote: The issue is a particularly sensitive one for the Pentagon and the Bush administration. While many people believe that the Bush administration viewed September 11 as a priceless opportunity to implement an ultra-reactionary program of militarism and repression, Butler is different. His military assignment brought him into contact with at least one of the alleged hijackers.

E-mail it to a friend Weapons-facility cleanup tough, officials warn NORCO: Environmental experts say the military often underestimates the cost of decontamination. 08:10 AM PDT on Thursday, August 4, 2005 By DAVID DANELSKI / The Press-Enterprise SAN FRANCISCO - If the military follows through with plans to shut down its Norco weapons-research center, getting the land ready for civilian uses could be a cumbersome, costly and time-consuming endeavor, according to environmental officials from three states. The Department of Defense often underestimates the extent of pollution in soil and groundwater and then battles state officials about how much contamination the military should clean up, officials said during a conference here Wednesday. "We have found inadequate site characterizations and multiple unknowns," Rick Moss, chief of military facilities for California's Department of Toxic Substances Control, told the audience of state, federal and military environmental cleanup officials. As a result, cleaning up abandoned military land for homes, businesses, schools, parks or other uses generally has cost much more and taken much longer than originally anticipated, Moss and others said.
