CARTOGRAPHERS make maps. Cartography involves many processes that require the skills of a wide range of specialists and technicians. Some workers in cartographic occupations perform routine work while others have technical jobs requiring years of training and experience. In large organizations, some workers may specialize in one function such as compiling or editing. In smaller organizations, job duties may be combined according to the type of maps produced. ... www.caljobs.ca.gov or at America’s Job Bank at www.ajb.dni.us

The following compilation of Internet/WWW sites is intended to be an introductory guide to some of the map and reference resources available via the World Wide Web. Consider using one of the WWW search engines if you are looking for a specific type of map or reference. The maps which are listed here have been selected because they are thought to be reasonably useful and/or interesting. They are categorized by geographical region although there are a couple of thematic categories such as Interactive Maps which both highlights the potential of the WWW and are also fun to use. Note that there is some overlap in geographic coverage between these categories. The emphasis is on displayable maps (e.g. images) rather than digital cartographic (GIS) and satellite data which can be found in the separate compilation Geodata Information Sources . There is also another listing which includes Weather Maps and Imagery

June 2000 NEW CHIEF th nd CATALOGING During the year, work has continued on the revision of Cartographic Materials: A Manual of Interpretation for AACR2 . In January, Elizabeth Mangan presented a set of rule revision proposals to the MAGERT Cataloging and Classification Committee and, with the committee’s approval, to the ALCTS Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access (CC:DA). The majority of the requests were approved and forwarded for consideration by the Joint Steering Committee for AACR. Ms. Mangan attended the Joint Steering Committee’s meeting last March in San Diego to present the revision package for consideration. A second and hopefully, final package of rule revision proposals was prepared for presentation to the Committee and to CC:DA at the ALA conference. PHILLIPS SOCIETY The Philip Lee Phillips Society held its 4 th annual meeting and dinner in early April in Pasadena in conjunction with the California Map Society. This meeting was a tremendous success for both the Phillips Society and the California Map Society, since more than 150 individuals participated, which is more than twice the normal 60 or so who routinely attend the California Map Society meetings. Planning has already begun for the Spring 2001 meeting at the Library of Congress on the theme of Latin American mapping, which will be co-sponsored with the Huntington Society of the Library’s Hispanic Division. The Ambassador of Peru has offered to host a reception at his residence on the occasion of the meeting and the Texas Map Society has invited the Phillips Society to meet with them October 2002 in Arlington, Texas.

More details
The devastating earthquake that struck the Indian Ocean probably caused some islands to move by several metres.
The massive thrust of the tectonic plates may have heaved the Indian Ocean floor towards Indonesia by about 15m (50ft), seismologists think. The movement is likely to have altered the geography of islands like Sumatra. The force of the earthquake was probably also so great that it made the Earth wobble on its axis and cut our day length by fractions of a second. Building pressure The earthquake follows more than a century and a half of growing pressure between the Indian tectonic plate and the Burma microplate, upon which Sumatra, Nicobar and the Andaman Islands sit. "In terms of the specific position of Sumatra, it will have moved," Bill McGuire, a geophysicist at University College London, UK, told the News@Nature website. "Things have shifted literally within minutes." It is not only likely that these islands have shifted geographically, they may also be higher or lower than before, Professor McGuire believes.

The Geography
of Political Fundraising
By LARRY MAKINSON
All politics may be local, but political fundraising knows no geographic bounds. We’ve heard the story line a thousand times: "Presidential hopeful George W. Bush/Al Gore said today at a fundraiser in New York/Los Angeles/Houston/Chicago…" It has become part of the fabric of modern political life that politicians are expected to crisscross the country from fundraiser to fundraiser, delivering speeches, making pronouncements and attacking their opponents. Why do the candidates descend with such regularity into places like Manhattan, Los Angeles, Silicon Valley, and Houston? As Willie Sutton said so famously, when asked why he robbed banks, "That’s where the money is." And where exactly is that money? Scanning contributor lists is not the easiest way to get a handle on that. To see it most clearly, it takes a map. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a map is worth millions. And the very first thing you’ll find when charting the patterns of campaign contributions is that money has a geography all its own — a geography that’s not necessarily related to where people live. In the last election, just a tiny fraction of Americans — one-tenth of 1 percent — contributed $1,000 or more to a federal candidate, PAC, or party… and people with that kind of disposable income are not randomly distributed in every neighborhood. Consider, for instance, the money that’s flowed in so far in southern California.
