2003 Annual Conference Photographs
Despite rain and snow, this year's annual conference in Sacramento proceeded as scheduled and without a hitch (well, almost without a hitch). Our fact checker is still hard on the job, but it looks like attendance hit an all-time high, with 415 faculty, professionals, students, family, and friends in attendance from across the state and nation. Additionally, the eight field trips attracted almost 200 participants. If these numbers are any indication, it is clearly apparent that geography, as a discipline and as a profession, is alive and well in the great state of California! On Friday evening, after quickly moving the Kickoff BBQ indoors, we were treated to a biologist's perspective on the outdoor classroom. Keynote speaker Ed Grumbine, currently Director of the Sierra Institute for Field Studies, shared his 30+ years of experience as a teacher in the field. Despite flagging budgets and the ever-present concerns over liability, Dr. Grumbine is leading the charge for teachers and students to expand their classrooms beyond walls and beyond institutions.

W ith a land area of 3,510 square miles, the elevation runs from sea level at the Pacific ocean to 6,954 feet atop Anthony Peak to the northeast. To the north, the town of Laytonville holds the geographical distinction of being located at the highest elevation of any community located along U.S. 101 from Baja California to Canada, at 1,620 feet above sea level. I nland from 129 miles of magnificent coastline, the diverse environment is as varied as the terrain. W orld-class wine vineyards thrive in the valleys, while stands of redwoods and douglas fir tower down from the Pacific Coast Range. Diverse micro-climates benefit from having four seasons and 40 to 100 plus inches of annual rainfall, depending on the location, elevation, and of course ... the weather. W hile the Russian River flows south from above Ukiah, hundreds of miles of the Eel River and its' tributaries flow north to empty into the Pacific.

Lake Tahoe Partnership Project
Summary of Project
The National Map as a foundation for integrating, sharing, and using other data easily and consistently.
Strong ties across the California and Nevada State line unite the Lake Tahoe Area Partnership Project study area into a cohesive cultural and economic region. In defining the project boundaries, area agencies have specified that the project must include the Tahoe Basin, major watersheds around the basin, and the trade corridor that spans from Reno through Minden, Nevada, south to the Markleeville, California, area. The Sierra Nevada crest line represents both the watershed and the regional boundary to the west. County and 7.5-minute quadrangle boundaries define the remaining project limits.
Project Data Description
  • Digital Orthophoto Quadrangles
Second generation 1-m resolution digital orthophoto quadrangles (DOQ) for the eastern part of the project area were produced from 1998 and 1999 aerial photographs by the Western Geographic Science Center in Menlo Park, Calif. This was done to replace the existing 1993-vintage DOQs and thereby create a consistent coverage with the western side of the project area, where 1998-vintage DOQs were already available. The data for the entire project area were mosaicked into 7.5-minute quadrangles and converted to GeoTIFF format using Hawk-MP software. These mosaicked DOQs remained in their original Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) zone (zone 10 on the west side of the project area and zone 11 on the east side).
