WARREN Five years after its founding, the Philip Lee Phillips Society, which supports programs of the Library's Geography and Map Division, met April 6-8 in Pasadena, Calif. The meeting was hosted by the California Map Society. The joint meeting reflected the Phillips Society's desire to strengthen its ties with more than a dozen regional map societies throughout the country. Approximately 140 cartographic enthusiasts attended the meeting, which focused on the theme "Mapping the Pacific." During the evening of April 6, Ralph Ehrenberg, recently retired chief of the Geography and Map Division, set the stage for the following day's program with a slide- illustrated talk, "Charting Pacific Waters: Lieutenant Charles Wilkes and the First United States Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842." Mr. Ehrenberg described the innovative technique that Wilkes developed by which ships and boats stationed around an island took measurements simultaneously when signaled by the firing of a cannon. This resulted in accurate delineations of islands in a minimum of time. Also discussed was the importance of Wilkes's work in the mapping of the Pacific Northwest, where, by tying his work to that of John C. Fremont's explorations on land, he was able to produce a map that for the first time placed many of the features of the Western United States in their correct positions.

Atlases, maps, and gazetteers are available in print, microform, and electronic formats in several of the UC Berkeley libraries. The Library's primary collection of maps and other cartographic materials is located in the , 50 McCone Hall. Other campus collections include The Bancroft Library's historical maps of California and western North America and the East Asian Library's historical maps of Japan and gazetteers of East Asia. In addition, the Water Resources Center Archives has an extensive collection of historical and current maps related to water, as well as a collection of coastal aerial photographs dating from the mid-1940's to the mid-1950's. Maps and other cartographic materials at UC Berkeley can be located by searching the library catalogs
Finding Maps and Atlases
Pathfinder is the catalog used to find maps and other items in most of the UC Berkeley libraries. Melvyl is the catalog of materials available from the libraries of the ten UC campuses and other research collections in the state; it also includes several UC Berkeley affiliated libraries not included in Pathfinder.
The best way to find maps or atlases in these library catalogs is to search by "subject keyword" and limit the search by publication format "maps." Cartographic materials such as gazetteers, aerial photographs, and nautical charts can also be searched by "subject keyword." For some examples of subject searches, see

NOTES OF APRIL 2000 MEETING Huntington Library, Art Galleries and Botanical Gardens
The Phillip Lee Philips/ California Map Society April 2000 meeting is now history. Almost like clockwork, the volunteers who helped put it together made it a memorable occasion for all. Special thanks to Reese and Rosemary Benson for yeoman work in keeping track of all the participants and to Greg McIntosh, who was cool headed as our transportation major-domo. Also to Greg’s wife Sandy, Steve Kanter, Bob Ross, and Reese Benson who helped Greg move people from Pasadena to the Getty and back.
Then there was Marianne Hinckle who produced the keepsakes, Julie Sweetkind who helped keep them straight and get them into the hands of attendees, Glen and Ellen McLaughlin without whose contributions of time, effort and infusion of funds many thing would not have been he same. Al Vogeler’s pencil was kept busy recording, his contribution is elsewhere in this issue.
And, of course, we must especially note the help from the Philips Society, Ron Grim and Pam van EE spent countless hours getting the speakers and putting together keepsakes from the Library of Congress. Lots of other people were involved as well. To everyone, a great vote of thanks and an acknowledgement of pride in a job well done.

The History
Perhaps the most famous geographic myth is California shown as an island. The earliest maps of North America showed California as a peninsula, based on the reports of Francisco de Ulloa who explored the Bay of California in 1539. The famous maps by Gerard Mercator and Abraham Ortelius showed a correct depiction of California in the late sixteenth century, but that was to change early in the following century. In 1602, Sebastian Vizcaino sailed up the California coast, and Father Antonio de la Ascension wrote a journal of the voyage. Ascension claimed that California was separated from the American continent by the “mediterranean Sea of California.” It is not clear where Ascension got this notion, but this claim led to the mapping of California as an island beginning in 1622 with a small map on the title page of Antonio de Herrera’s Descripcion de las Indias Occidentales . The first folio maps to show this myth were by Abraham Goos’ in 1624 and by Henry Brigg’s in 1625. However, it wasn’t until the more important commercial Dutch publishers accepted the insularity of California that this notion achieved universal acceptance. The first of these influential insular renderings was by Jan Jansson, whose map of North America from 1636 graphically displayed this myth, and this was soon followed by all other major publishers such as Nicolas Sanson, Guillaume Blaeu, Pierre Duval, and Herman Moll.
