Keep RFIDs Out of California Public Libraries!
Berkeley It's bad enough that some California libraries are moving forward with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tracking systems regardless of the implications for patrons' privacy. Now the Berkeley Public Library is considering laying off valued employees and cutting needed library services while implementing a $650,000 RFID system purchased with money borrowed from the city of Berkeley. EFF is strongly opposed to RFID in libraries. It's appalling that Berkeley residents are being asked to pay for this costly experiment, especially when jobs are in jeopardy. We urge residents to attend the Berkeley City Council meeting on Tuesday, February 8, and the Board of Library Trustees meeting on Wednesday, February 9, where community members will demand an investigation of the Berkeley Public Library restructuring plan and the budgetary implications of the RFID system purchase. For details, download this flyer and don't forget to pass the word along.

TrackBack Print E-mail TalkBack The notion of filtering Net access at public libraries received very different reactions from the city councils of Coppell, Texas, and San Jose, California, yesterday, where officials tried to balance concerns about online pornography with cries of censorship. Silicon Valley council members voted 8 to 3 against a plan to create "children Internet zones," by installing blocking software on computers designated for use by minors at the cities' 22 libraries. Councilwoman Pat Dando's proposal was inspired in part by the Supreme Court's decision on the Communications Decency Act , in which Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's partial dissent suggested creating "adult zones" to keep kids out of the Net's red-light districts. San Jose's Library Commission supported the idea, but it was opposed by groups such as the

99. Four Carnegie Library Buildings In Santa Cruz, Calif.
Notes on the library buildings in Santa Cruz, california.

The Four Carnegie Libraries, 19031921
Andrew Carnegie visiting Santa Cruz in 1910.
by Dan McMahon T he Santa Cruz Public Library (now Libraries) received four grants from the Carnegie Corporation, between 1903 and 1921, for the construction of a main library and three branch buildings. All four of these buildings were designed by noted California architect William H. Weeks. Two of the four are still standing, one as a museum (which is common for surviving Carnegie Libraries) and the other as exactly what it was built to be, the Garfield Park Branch of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries.
The Four Carnegie Libraries:
Santa Cruz Main, also called "The Carnegie Library." 224 Church St., Santa Cruz. More about Santa Cruz Main The grant from the Carnegie Corporation for this building, and for Garfield Park Branch were both announced in November, 1913. The Seabright Branch Library opened in August of 1916, and in 1954-55 the City Museum was moved here and combined with the library. The branch library was closed in 1965, leaving the museum, which is now the City of Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History. Two additions were built at the rear of the building, in 1962 and 1968, so only the front portion of the building, a "Y" shaped structure, is original. The inside has been extensively remodeled, but the exterior is recently painted and is in excellent condition. Eastside Library, 1263 Soquel Ave., Santa Cruz.
