California Digital Library Database Transitions
Two transitions are taking place at the California Digital Library (CDL) that will have an impact on the way users access the catalog and abstracting and indexing databases from the UC campuses. Latest Transition: PubMed@UCI
  • Melvyl, the Catalog of the University of California Libraries, will become a single, combined database of what are now two separate databases, the Melvyl Catalog (CAT) and Periodicals Titles (PE) databases. This will allow you to do a single search for books, journals and series.
The catalog will stand alone, rather than sharing an interface with the 25 abstracting and indexing journal databases they now share.
The CDL will replace the underlying technology of the Melvyl Catalog and Periodicals Databases with the Ex Libris Aleph 500 system.
The new catalog will be available via the web (with some new capabilities currently not available in our existing systems) and limited telnet interfaces.
During the transition period, the catalog will be referred to as Melvyl-T, for Melvyl transition catalog.

This library partnered with five schools to connect the community. Among the activities were a poetry slam for elementary, middle school and high school students; and reading groups for local community college students. In addition, middle school students in a Spanish class interviewed local Spanish-speaking immigrants. The interviews were taped and later aired on a local community access television station.

California Libraries Flooded With Lame CDs What do Jessica Simpson, Ricky Martin, Crazy Town, Everclear, Samantha Mumba, 98 Degrees, and Eagle-Eye Cherry have in common? They're all chart toppers or they were, in 2003 whose remaindered albums from that year are now flooding libraries in California (and elsewhere) under the terms of a 3-year-old antitrust settlement with price-gouging record companies.
Cracked Rear-View or R.E.M.'s Monster ) at the used-CD stores I frequent. But this: 405 copies of Ricky Martin's Sound Loaded at the LA County Public Library? And the RIAA is scratching its collective head about why record sales are down?

California State University, Northridge
Northridge, CA In Northridge we learned that a university with facilities for over 25,000 students can be changed in less than thirty seconds into a university with no usable buildings, no electrical power, no water, and no telephone service. California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is about a mile from the epicenter of the Northridge Earthquake of January 17, 1994 and the damage total for the campus stands at over 400 million dollars. The earthquake happened at 4:31 a.m. on a holiday during semester break, so only a few people were in university buildings during the quake. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured on campus. All of the buildings on campus were damaged, some beyond repair. When the extent of the damage caused at the university was clear, a decision was made to establish alternative classrooms and offices using hundreds of temporary structures located on lawns, athletic fields, and parking lots. Classes began four weeks after the quake, just two weeks later than originally planned.
