Maybe That's Why They Call It 'Letter Size'
Here's a great booksale promotion idea from the Mission Viejo Library . The Letters are desktop published and printed on 8.5" x 11" astrobright paper. In the pictured example the paper letters were plastic laminated and then fixed to the plain back side of an existing plastic banner using foam tape. The banner was then draped over a stone wall in front of the library. Valerie Meyer, Mission Viejo City Librarian, reports that they plan to add "TODAY" to the banner for the next booksale. This is an easy and eye-catching way to produce colorful signage and there are surely many ways to expand on this theme. Just in case your desktop publishing facilities are tied up, we offer a

Abstract
The University of California's California Digital Library (CDL) formed an Ebook Task Force in August 2000 to evaluate academic libraries' experiences with electronic books (e-books), investigate the e-book market, and develop operating guidelines, principles and potential strategies for further exploration of the use of e-books at the University of California (UC). This article, based on the findings and recommendations of the Task Force Report ], briefly summarizes task force findings, and outlines issues and recommendations for making e-books viable over the long term in the academic environment, based on the long-term goals of building strong research collections and providing high level services and collections to its users.
Introduction
While electronic books and texts have been available for some time for selected public domain titles, only relatively recently have electronic texts been packaged and offered commercially as electronic books. It is the shift to the commercial production, sale, and distribution of e-books that has changed how libraries need to deal with e-books, and what prompted our investigation.

About the UC Libraries
Great universities have great libraries. The University of California libraries comprise world-class collections and innovative services. More than 100 libraries on the 10 UC campuses support the University's teaching and research. Collectively, the UC libraries make up the largest research/academic library in the world, with 32 million items in their holdings and significant digital collections. Vision Statement

Systemwide Groups and Activities
The current models for scholarly publishing are no longer economically sustainable. See what the UC libraries are doing to foster change in scholarly communication. The University of California libraries work together to expand the scope of their collections, improve access to information, and develop alternative modes of scholarly communication. That work is guided by a strategic plan, released in June 2004. Ongoing assessment activities are a continual part of strategic planning. See the assessment page for more details. And if you're really surfing, visit some friends who've linked to this page: Nerd World Cal State Long Beach , the California Pioneer Project Digivex , and for some reason, Steve Stengel and Charles Hobbs What exactly is Southern California? By my definition, for the purpose of these pages, Southern California is everything north from the Mexican border up to the northern county lines of Santa Barbara, Kern, and San Bernardino Counties. (In other words, every county south of the Baseline except San Luis Obispo.) Another very useful site with a narrower focus bears the moniker of @LA Libraries The public and special library pages are divided (sort of) by ALD designations...these are the library types classified in the American Library Directory. The academic libraries, however, are just as in real life: One big mess!

What Happened to the Card Catalog? Find a library in YOUR neighborhood! The California Library Directory provides public library addresses and phone numbers arranged by city. Library online catalogs are an excellent tool for your job search. Yes, the Internet is amazing. But everything you need isn't on the Internet, it's down the road at your local public library. Or up the street at your nearest big research library. The good news is: you can search through the collection at many libraries from where you are right now. Looking for a copy of What Color is Your Parachute? A directory of shoe wholesalers? A government or investment report on the restaurant industry? Connect to an electronic library catalog! Search for the item you want and see which library owns it. Do you need hours for the library branch near you? Many of these electronic systems have library information for their system. Some of these systems have amazing extras: full text magazine and newspaper CD ROMs that you can search from the Internet. Or one-of-a-kind collections like community information files or job search help.
