To Achieve and Maintain Excellence Sep 19, 2005 WUHSD Launches Comprehensive, Three-Pronged Student Support Initiative - "Whatever It Takes"
WUHSD students work in pairs on a math problem B eing a high school freshman can be an unnerving experience as students are faced with a new and larger school, new classes, new classmates and new social pressures. To address this reality, the Whittier Union High School District this September will introduce several new initiatives designed to provide systematic support to all students to ensure a successful, positive high school experience beginning on day one. In its first year these initiatives will focus on the freshman classes at each of the WUHSD's high schools, including a freshman-only school day on September 6, strategies to methodically improve communication between WUHSD and its partner elementary districts, and an extension of the Summer Bridge program throughout the regular school year. With the implementation of these programs, incoming freshmen will benefit from resources made available to keep students involved and supported throughout their high school careers. "We know that the first year is critical - students make connections with their teachers, their peers and their schoolwork early on that will last throughout high school," said WUHSD Superintendent Sandra Thorstenson. "With that in mind, our goal is to get them engaged right from the start and keep them focused through graduation."
