T he Mendocino County map is shown below, with Mendocino County outlined on the California reference map at the right. Mendocino County is outlined as you can see, around Ukiah, the county seat. W ith a land area of 3,510 square miles, the elevation runs from sea level at the Pacific ocean to 6,954 feet atop Anthony Peak to the northeast. To the north, the town of Laytonville holds the geographical distinction of being located at the highest elevation of any community located along U.S. 101 from Baja California to Canada, at 1,620 feet above sea level. I nland from 129 miles of magnificent coastline, the diverse environment is as varied as the terrain. W orld-class wine vineyards thrive in the valleys, while stands of redwoods and douglas fir tower down from the Pacific Coast Range. Diverse micro-climates benefit from having four seasons and 40 to 100 plus inches of annual rainfall, depending on the location, elevation, and of course ... the weather. W hile the Russian River flows south from above Ukiah, hundreds of miles of the Eel River and its' tributaries flow north to empty into the Pacific.

CHAPTER 14
CALIFORNIA
C alifornia is home to more than 10 percent of all Americans and a central element in the American cultural fabric. Although more than two-thirds of native-born Americans live in their state of birth, fewer than half of all Californians were born in the state. Rather, California has been an important destination for U.S. internal migration in nearly every decade since 1850. By most of the criteria used in the definition of regions, California ( Map 13 : 24K) is not a single unit. The agricultural population of the Imperial Valley in the southeast is quite different from the urban population of San Francisco. The striking flatness of the San Joaquin Valley is in sharp contrast to the ruggedness of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. There are broad areas of desert in the southern interior and heavily forested slopes along the coastal north. The lowest and highest elevations in the conterminous United States, Death Valley and Mount Whitney, respectively, are almost within sight of each other. California's dramatic and varied physical environment has played a strong role in the state's settlement. Most of the state's population today is crowded into a small part of its territory, constricted by expanses of rugged topography and a widespread lack of water. In fact, this mecca for America's worship of the outdoor life surpasses every other state in its level of urbanization. Several factors account for this, but the restrictive aspects of the physical environment are certainly important.

Geographers study people, the environment, and the ways they affect one another. They analyze human activities on the land and how these activities influence the natural environment, and conversely the influences of the physical world on human culture.
Geography forms an interdisciplinary bridge between the physical and human worlds. Thus, geographers are concerned with relating the natural and human-made environment to changing patterns of land use. To do this effectively they must understand and integrate multidisciplinary concepts to solve real-world problems. The Department of Geography has designed programs to meet the needs of students who are seeking:
  • To develop a broad liberal arts education focusing on global literacy of humans and their environments; Professional preparation in the field of geographic information systems (GIS); To become familiar with the contributions of geographic and spatial analysis needed to complement their overall academic preparation; and

The Geographical Information Center (GIC) at CSU, Chico was started in 1988 by the Department of Geography and Planning to introduce northern California to geographical information systems (GIS) technology. We are housed on the first floor of the 35 Main Building in downtown Chico, on the eastern edge of the campus.
The GIC has two major goals. Our first goal is to educate. Most of our employees are hired as interns after having completed the undergraduate GIS curriculum. Our second goal is to develop relationships with local public and private mapping agencies. As our nation moves further into an infomational age, many agencies don't know how to begin this transition. The GIC has proven adept at assisting agencies in this period of rapid technological change.
The GIC serves a diverse clientele. Our projects fall primarily into one of two categories: government resource agencies and local government. On occasion, we also contract with private organizations.

September 23, 2003 Researchers are still in the dark about most aspects of deep-ocean life, and perhaps least known are the breeding strategies of deep-sea fish. Now, researchers carrying out geological work off the coast of California have uncovered a completely new type of brooding site. At the Gorda Escarpment, 100 miles (160 kilometers) off the coast and one mile (1,600 meters) below the surface, octopus and fish aggregate densely in the darkness of the ocean floor to lay eggs and care for young. The brooding site may be a totally new type of deep-sea biological hot spot, teeming with life in the otherwise sparsely populated depths. Using a remote-controlled submersible robot, researchers have captured images of thousands of lilac-colored fish eggs, plastered across boulders by the little-known blob sculpin, Psychrolutes phrictus.

December 8, 2003 Using sophisticated computer modeling, researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey found that a large earthquake along the northern region of the San Jacinto fault could trigger a cascading rupture of the Sierra Madre-Cucamonga system, potentially causing a major earthquake of magnitude 7.5 to 7.8 near the Los Angeles metropolitan region. In a separate study, scientists monitored tiny "microearthquakes" along a section of the notorious San Andreas Fault, which runs from Mexico to San Francisco, to create images of what the inside of the fault looks like. The results show that the fault zone has four secondary faults that may connect to a deeper and older part of the fault system. The fault zone is also composed of multiple cracks or possibly pockets of fluid. "[Our research] suggests a complex fault zone where stresses could be distributed in complicated ways," said Andres Chavarria, a senior graduate student in seismology at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and the lead author of the second study. "Some parts of the fault zone may accumulate more stresses than others, therefore becoming more susceptible to larger earthquakes."
