Description
The 16th Century explorers, Cortez and Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, were the first to view the land we now call California.
Then, in 1579, Sir Francis Drake explored the rugged coastline of California and claimed it for England's Queen Elizabeth.
Spanish missionaries followed in the mid-1700s, and then in 1825 Mexico took control, then finally relinquishing its grip in 1848. Soon after California was granted statehood, and in the minds of many, became the most famous of all the states.
It's the most populated U.S. state and a land of many contrasts, including high mountains ( Sierra Nevada ), fertile valleys, the Pacific Ocean beaches, impressive redwood forests, deserts, national parks and so much more.
Famed for its cities and lifestyles, California is one of the most unique destinations on the planet.

Dr. James R. Curtis
presented:
"East L.A. Moves South" to the Association of American Geographers meeting in Los Angeles in March, 2002.
This study examines the evolving hierarchy of Latino, especially Mexican, urban places in Los Angeles. Based on a variety of data, including demographic, economic, political and cultural, it contends that the core of Mexican Los Angeles has shifted from East L.A. to the old industrial corridor south of downtown, focusing on the city of Hungington Park. The processes and consequences of this move are considered, particularly contrasts in the built environment between East L.A. and Huntington Park.
Dr. Curtis presented a paper:
"Las Plazas of Manaus, Brazil" to the Conference of Latin Americanist Geographers
This study examines the plazas of Manaus, Brazil. It offers a 7-fold typology of contemporary plazas based on prevailing function and landscape character. Historical linkages with Portuguese and French colonial influences are explored.

Thematic Unit: California Postcards Overview
The geographic regions of our home state of California will be the focus of this 4 th grade unit for 7 weeks. Students will examine patterns that influence population density in each region. Social studies, science and math curriculum will be integrated to produce a class wall map of California identifying the four distinctive regions of the state as a final product of the unit. Students will work in groups doing on-line and library research to compile data, facts, and anecdotes to produce a travel-guide magazine and post cards of their assigned region to advertise the appeal of the region they are assigned. Individual work will consist of in-class activities, class discussion contributions, journal reflections, and weekly homework assignments. This unit will strengthen students’ utilization of various methods to gather, analyze, publish and present factual data. Integration of these skills will give students real-world experience for future research papers, projects, and projects.

    Wikitravel:Geographical hierarchy
    From Wikitravel
Travel is, in essence, about geography. Wikitravel is thus also about geography, although this is only one way of looking at travel (see other ways of seeing travel for details). Until extraterrestrial travel is a practical possibility for non-billionaires, Wikitravel is going to deal with travel on planet Earth (although there is a Space article for jaunts out of the atmosphere). We see a rough hierarchy of geographical areas in the world, detailed below. Each level of hierarchy probably deserves an article of some length on its own. The names are unfortunately kind of forced, but they're selected to be unique just to make it easy to follow. Table of contents showTocToggle("show","hide") 1 Purpose

Why do we have a geographical hierarchy in the first place? The point of the hierarchy is not to nitpick about geographical niceties, but to organize our work. What do we write Wikitravel articles about? What are the subjects of our discussions? What kind of article do I write about Topic X? When we have a hierarchy of geographical units, we can use them to identify things we write about, and thus how we write about them. For example, consider

S ANBORN F IRE I NSURANCE M APS The Map Library has one of the largest collections of Sanborn Fire Insurance maps in the country. Coverage includes over 1,631 cities and towns primarily in the western United States. In the simplest terms these maps were conceived for, and throughout their history have been primarily used by, fire insurance underwriters to determine the risk involved in insuring individual buildings in urban areas against loss in a conflagration. D.A. Sanborn's Company founded 1867 in New York City, was not the first of the type, but since that time has monopolized the industry.

These maps represent the most detailed published information on urban land use for some 22,000 communities in the United States. They are compiled at the scale of 50, 100 or 200 feet to one inch, and presented on uniform sheets 24" x 26" or approximately 12" x 14" after 1951. Their chief advantages accrue from their extreme detail of building sites and construction information concerning the use of individual buildings, and the availability of comparable coverage at intervals spanning more than half a century in many instances. Most of the maps' limitations derive from the limited purpose for which they were produced: underwriters have no interest in open space, so no land use information is given for land without buildings; activities which pose no special fire risk are frequently left unmentioned, so that a building may be used in both a commercial and an industrial capacity but be designated for only one or the other; residential subdivisions are rarely mapped because of their homogeneity, with the result that major portions of most urban areas have no coverage.
