    `HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY OF CALIFORNIA
Unless otherwise noted, these books are by secular publishers and many dealing with history assume that Native Americans inhabited California as long as ten thousand years ago. Bears, Pirates and Silver Lace Tales of Early California by Anne B. Fisher. These stories have become part of the legends of early California authentic tales of friendly Indians and Spaniards, and not so friendly pirates who pillaged along the coast; stories of bears who could never be killed, and soldiers who were afraid of a strange, spotted snake. There are stories of how California sea otters took silk and tea to Boston, how the first piano was brought to Monterey in 1843, and there was a party to celebrate it, and how two staunch little boys defied Southern sentiment and flew the flag at half-mast when they got the news that Abraham Lincoln had been shot twelve stories in all. Most of these stories originated on the Monterey Peninsula and were chosen from many by a class of fourth graders at the Del Monte School. The book was first published in 1944. Trade paper, 134 pages, illustrated with simple line drawings, some in color. Cat#BM. $5.95*

    Yorkship Village, New Jersey
The village was designed by Electus Darwin Litchfield, who was influenced by the "garden city" developments popular in England at the time. He envisioned Yorkship Village as "a place of light rooms and clean yards, with adequate playgrounds and amusement fields; a place of beauty and appropriateness and cleanliness so great that a man returning from his daily toil would receive new strength and recreation; a place where the man who could save a fraction of his income would be able to obtain with it, for himself and for his children, a share of play and education, literature and music, and other uplifting things." http://www.cis.org/articles/1999/back299.html
Immigration and California Communities By William A.V. Clark February 1999 A recent media headline during the governor's race in California in 1998 — "What a Difference Four Years Makes" — drew attention to the lack of any debate on the immigration issue. In 1994, in contrast, immigration was at the heart of gubernatorial debates in California. But has anything changed, especially at the local level? Are immigration's impacts different in 1998? A detailed analysis of communities where there has been large-scale immigration suggests that, while voter attention may not be directed to immigrant issues, immigration outcomes at the local level require even more political attention.
    • About four million new immigrants (including Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) immigrants) were counted in California in the last decade or so. Forty-one percent of all immigrants to California settle in Los Angeles, another 9 percent in Orange County. More than 16,000 immigrants settled in one zip code in Burbank, a suburban city in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, and more than 25,000 new immigrants settled in two zip codes in San Francisco. Hispanic foreign-born women with less than a ninth grade education average about 4.6 births in California. In Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara counties, foreign-born Mexican teenagers account for more than 40 percent of all teenage births.

COLLOQUIUM SERIES Region by Design: Public Policy and the Making of Southern California Jennifer Wolch University of Southern California In this way, L.A.’s story is not unlike that of other major metropolitan regions in the U.S. But southern California’s unique geography — its topography, hazards and climate, its far-flung polycentric urban form — as well as its demographic diversity, byzantine system of governance, dispersed power structures and dynamic economy can make interpretation of the region as well as the design and execution of specific planning objectives very difficult indeed. Differences between southern California and other metro areas also mean that current nationwide calls for “smart growth” policies may need some alteration to effectively moderate inequities, slow sprawl and promote more livable communities in the southern California region. 1080 Derby Hall

Atlases, maps, and gazetteers are available in print, microform, and electronic formats in several of the UC Berkeley libraries. The Library's primary collection of maps and other cartographic materials is located in the , 50 McCone Hall. Other campus collections include The Bancroft Library's historical maps of California and western North America and the East Asian Library's historical maps of Japan and gazetteers of East Asia. In addition, the Water Resources Center Archives has an extensive collection of historical and current maps related to water, as well as a collection of coastal aerial photographs dating from the mid-1940's to the mid-1950's. Maps and other cartographic materials at UC Berkeley can be located by searching the library catalogs
    Finding Maps and Atlases
Pathfinder is the catalog used to find maps and other items in most of the UC Berkeley libraries. Melvyl is the catalog of materials available from the libraries of the ten UC campuses and other research collections in the state; it also includes several UC Berkeley affiliated libraries not included in Pathfinder.
The best way to find maps or atlases in these library catalogs is to search by "subject keyword" and limit the search by publication format "maps." Cartographic materials such as gazetteers, aerial photographs, and nautical charts can also be searched by "subject keyword." For some examples of subject searches, see
