    Adam came to this country with the Hudson Bay Company in 1841 and survived the Indian War and great hardships as a pioneer. He owned and lost land,farmed and later in life became a mail carrier. The town of Benston, Washington was named in his honor.

The California Genealogical Society, organized in San Francisco on February 12, 1898, is the best place to find records of those ancestors. The Society focuses not only on Californians but also on the states they came from. The Library is rich in genealogy reference materials, both standard and unique, covering people and places in California and the rest of the country.

The library collection contains more than 30,000 genealogical references including 10,000 local and family histories, 2500 reels of microfilm, a large selection of CDs, dozens of maps, and hundreds of reference books, periodicals, passenger lists, lineage charts, and city directories dating back to the 1880s.     Mariposa- New City - A new City, to be called Mariposa City, has been laid out at the Mariposa diggins. It has been surveyed by Mr. C. Armstrong, the streets to be sixty feet wide.
    The number of inhabitants already settled around the place, is supposed to be about 3,000 , and the entire population of the gulch is estimated at 1,500. There are now 15 or 20 stores in the place- a large hotel is in operation, and lots are selling from two to five hundred dollars each. In the neighborhood, as much as 2 1/2 pounds of gold have ben taken out from one hole, in a day.
