http://www.usc.edu/dept/LAS/general_studies/GE/
The university's general education program is structured to provide a coherent, integrated introduction to the breadth of knowledge you will need to consider yourself (and to be considered by other people) a generally well-educated person.
In thinking over what is necessary, the faculty identified five principal goals:
  • To teach students the skills needed for critical thinking, writing and reading. To teach these skills in a specific context, i.e., social issues, cultures and traditions, science and society. To teach students how to apply these skills so that they can find, evaluate, and use the vast amount of information now available via the media, the internet, new technologies, and traditional forms of knowledge. To teach students to discern and assess the values that underlie various critical positions, and to articulate their own with coherence and integrity. To encourage a passion for learning.
The program is divided into two parts: the first part, called "Foundations," presents courses that give you the "big picture" about (I) the development of western European and American culture, as well as (II) alternative cultural traditions and (III) the basic principles animating scientific inquiry. The second part, called "Case Studies," provides particular opportunities for you to sharpen your critical intelligence by considering specific (IV) applications of science and technology, (V) works of literature, philosophy and art, and (VI) contemporary social issues of urgency and importance. In addition, all students must satisfy writing and diversity requirements to complete the USC Core.

Transfer Students

Articulation Agreements Courses taken which transfer to the University of California (UC) system are generally transferable to Saint Mary's. Most work completed at accredited four-year schools will transfer. In addition, Saint Mary's maintains articulation agreements with community colleges in California and is in the process of adding others. Articulation agreements indicate courses at the community college that transfer directly into Saint Mary's under major or general requirements. Check with your transfer center to see if they have this agreement. Click on the college name to view the official articulation agreement with that institution. Credit is not given for courses in which grades of D+ or below are received, however, all grades are calculated into the grade point average. A maximum of 19 lower division course credits are transferable to Saint Mary's College (approximately 64 semester units or 95 quarter units).

History and Mission Since 1919, Dairy Council of California has been an innovator in nutrition education. The Dairy Council of California's vision driving our efforts into the 21st century is to become the recognized pioneer in advancing the role of food in achieving whole health through individualized learning The Dairy Council's nutrition education programs for school aged children and adults have touched the lives of millions of Californians. We strive to enhance the health and well-being of children and adults by enabling individuals to make healthful food and lifestyle choices.
Nutrition Philosophy
We embrace a nutrition approach that centers on a core of low fat choices, based on the 2005 Dietary Guidelines and USDA's MyPyramid food guidance system. Individuals are encouraged to eat a wide variety of foods, moderate portion sizes, and balance food choices over time. We believe that all foods can be part of healthful eating when managed for variety, moderation, and proportionality. We do not support labeling individual foods as "good" or "bad." We recognize that favorite foods, regardless of fat or calorie content, can be part of a balanced diet when using the above principles.

for event photos. Surgeon General's Family History Initiative
Health care professionals have known for a long time that common diseases - heart disease, cancer, and diabetes - and even rare diseases - like hemophilia, cystic fibrosis, and sickle cell anemia - can run in families. If one generation of a family has high blood pressure, it is not unusual for the next generation to have similarly high blood pressure.
Tracing the illnesses suffered by your parents, grandparents, and other blood relatives can help your doctor predict the disorders to which you may be at risk and take action to keep you and your family healthy.
To help focus attention on the importance of family health history, U.S. Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., in cooperation with other agencies within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has launched a national public health campaign, called the U.S. Surgeon General's Family History Initiative, to encourage all American families to learn more about their family health history.

District Not Obligated to Fund Football Expenses
The Governing Board of a high school district may refuse to use school funds for the annual cleaning and repair of football equipment, ruled the Attorney General in a recent opinion. The issue was whether a high school district could refuse to use its funds for the annual expenses of maintaining a football program when a "booster club" had been formed by parent volunteers to raise funds for a variety of after-school programs that included athletic events and the school band. The Attorney General concluded that as long as the private funds are raised voluntarily, the school district would not have to pay for those expenses with school funds. Donations Must Be Voluntary The Education Code (§ 17578) requires a school district to "provide for" cleaning and repair of football equipment on an annual basis. However, "a high school district may 'provide for' the cleaning and repair of football equipment without using school funds when donations are voluntarily given to cover such expenses," said the Attorney General. The critical factor is whether the donation is voluntary. "The California Constitution requires public schools to be "free" (Cal. Const., art. IX, § 5), and this includes not only activities that are essential to a school's curriculum but also extracurricular activities such as music and sports activities."

The 2005-06 Budget is Done!

The Budget approved July 11th contains few additional dollars for education beyond the total dollar amount proposed by the Governor back in January, augmented only slightly for increases in federal funds and other revenue adjustments. GATE is funded at $46 million, including recognition of .69% growth and a 4.23% COLA. Per pupil spending The Governor touts a K-12 per-pupil spending amount of $10,325 from all sources. However, you are cautioned by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell that the number actually includes a lot of money that never goes to classrooms, including $50 million for the State Library and $38 million for the Commission on Teacher Credentialing, as well as locally raised tax revenues for schools. The Governor estimates the actual Proposition 98 per-pupil funding to be $7,402 in 2005-06, a $395 increase from last year. The budget exceeds the newly benched Proposition 98 minimum funding level by over $740.9 million for this year and contributes over 40% of the General Fund to K-12 education.
