The Center for California Studies operates as a public education, public service, and applied research unit of California State University, Sacramento, devoted to promoting understanding of California's history, cultures, and public policies. Located on the capital campus of the California State University, it possesses a unique trust: to bring the resources of the state's public discourse, and civic education. Founded in 1983, the Center draws on the services and talents of more than 500 scholars throughout the campuses of the California State University and on the expertise of professionals and practitioners throughout the state. The Center preforms functions integral to the mission of the California State University. It fulfills a public service role inherent in the character of California State University, Sacramento, as a comprehensive regional University. It encourages faculty research and creative activity in support of the University's instructional mission. It provides resources for the preparation of California students for life in a multiethnic world, and the contribution by state universities to the economic, social, and cultural development of their regions.
