Six California Hare Krishna temples going bankrupt
Remember the Hare Krishnas in the airports years ago? "Here. Have a flower..." Six Hare Krishna temples in California are in the midst of bankruptcy proceedings A federal bankruptcy court on Monday approved a reorganization plan that will allow six California-based Hare Krishna temples and their affiliates to remain open while compensating members who claim they were abused at the society's schools. The plan includes $9.5 million for alleged victims of sexual, physical and emotional abuse during the 1970s and 1980s at religious boarding schools run by the Hare Krishnas. A similar reorganization plan was approved May 16 in West Virginia, where temples also filed for bankruptcy. The monotheistic tradition, also known as the International Society of Krishna Consciousness, was founded in 1966 by an Indian scholar. Ninety-two people sued the Hare Krishnas in 2000 in U.S. District Court in Dallas, alleging they had been sexually, physically and emotionally abused at Krishna boarding schools in the 1970s and 1980s. In the United States, schools were in Los Angeles and Three Rivers, Calif., Moundsville, W. Va., and Dallas. Other boarding schools were in India.

Aboriginal California encompassed hundreds of thousands of peoples in thousands of villages speaking over one hundred separate languages with many more derivative dialects. The tribal groups spanned a multitude of environmental conditions, from deserts in the south to mountains along the coastline to the great valley in the central part of the region. First-contact experiences also varied widely, from brief contacts with European ships in the early sixteenth century to the gold rush in the Sierra Nevada in the latter half of the nineteenth century. This land, cut off on all sides by mountains, deserts, and ocean, has always been dramatically different from any other part of native North America and is known to the present day for its distinct regional identity. Before contact with Europeans, California communities were located in small, relatively isolated areas with populations ranging from less than 100 to over 1,000 people, averaging 250 per group. Groups often lived in close proximity to other people who spoke a different language, so it was beneficial to understand and speak at least one foreign language. Largely patrilocal in residence, village society was organized on the basis of kinship, with each village consisting of extended relatives in one or two families, lineages, or clans. In times of need, the regional political system allowed for the formation of temporary alliances, which changed in composition according to changing circumstances.

For Immediate Release Contact: Cindy Young PASADENA - Feb. 27 Beginning March 13, KPCC 89.3 FM will present a special five-part series entitled, We Are Still Here: The Untold Story of the Indians of Southern California. Airing once a month on Larry Mantle's award-winning AirTalk, the programs will feature the leaders of Southern California's tribes discussing their history and culture. The series will also include in-depth reports that will take listeners onto the reservations and into the lives of Southern California's Indians. The series' title, We Are Still Here, is what Cahuilla elder Katherine Siva Saubel told AirTalk Senior Producer Ilsa Setziol, who produced and reported the series. After surviving the brutal Mission era and intense government repression in the 19th and part of the 20th century, there are some 300,000 Indians from more than 100 tribes living in California today, struggling to preserve their culture and identity. Larry Mantle will be joined during the series by leaders of several local tribes, including the Luiseno, Cahuilla, Kumeyaay, Serrano, Tongva (Gabrielino), and Acjachamem (Juaneno).

Bankruptcy filing, school closures precede compensation to 535 former students. Leaders of the Hare Krishna faith last week began carrying out the terms of a $9.5-million settlement that closes the books on a long-running child abuse scandal. Under the plan, the International Society of Krishna Consciousness organization has filed for bankruptcy in Los Angeles while it determines how to compensate 535 former students who say they were abused in the 1970s and '80s by adults at boarding schools run by the society. Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL Boarding school was a family tradition for Clay Gibson. As a teen, he followed his brother, uncle and great uncle to Baylor School, a 112-year-old private school in Chattanooga, Tenn., whose 670 acres overlook the Tennessee River. Thirty years later and now an Atlanta law-firm partner, Mr. Gibson is a Baylor trustee and easily lists the elite school's many attractions. But when time came to send his three children to high school, Mr. Gibson broke with tradition: He sent his two sons and daughter to a private day school. He loves Baylor, he says, but he and his wife never seriously considered it. "We're very involved in our kids' education and life, and we wanted to stay involved on a day-to-day basis," Mr. Gibson says. "We wanted them to stay in our home and enjoy that opportunity." Mr. Gibson's decision is part of broader shift plaguing schools like Baylor: While enrollment at private day schools is booming, boarding schools are seeing little or no growth. Boarding-school enrollment stands at 39,000 for the 2004-2005 school year, and has barely budged in five years, says the

A master teacher who incorporated the practices of Sawney Webb and the humanitarian ideas of Albert Einstein into a course that left those who took it forever changed. Larry McMillin, a man born of the South, came full circle when he died on Monday, February 21, 2005 in Ridgeland, Ms. Joseph Laurence McMillin was born in 1923, the only offspring of Joseph Lawrence and Margaret P’Pool McMillin. He grew up in a socially conscious home with his mother instilling a deep sense of self-worth within him. As his father moved up the corporate ladder, the family relocated several times from Georgia to Maryland to Pennsylvania. Before his family was to move again, Laurence went off to Princeton to continue his studies. World War II and the U.S. Army Air Corps interrupted those studies, which he completed as a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Princeton University in 1948. He returned to the South and became a reporter for the Memphis Press Scimitar . It was there that while doing research for a story, he came upon a passage that covered the achievements of a former confederate soldier from North Carolina who became a schoolmaster. The man – Sawney Webb, became McMillin’s lifelong inspiration. McMillin credited men like Sawney Webb for making revolutionary changes that transformed American society and morals in the mid-nineteenth century. Sawney Webb not only influenced the direction of McMillin’s life, but his inspirations became the basis of a course he later developed at Webb. He also met his partner in life, Marguerite, a writer and reporter who is famed to have conducted the first interview with William Faulkner in his own home; they were married for 48 years.
