Back to School: Students in Transition Program Helps Homeless Students Succeed in School
There are over 3000 identified homeless children and youth attending public schools in Santa Cruz County. These children may not be hanging out on street corners or even visible to the public. They are the children who may be camping, living in cars, moving from motel to hotel, friend to friend, or relative to relative. They may have a roof over their head and may call it home, but to the federally funded programs under the Stewart B. McKinney Act, they are homeless, which means they lack a fixed or permanent place to live.
Lacking housing consistency creates many problems for homeless children. It is difficult to enroll in programs that require a residency address. Health records may be lost or in storage and inaccessible. Families may be afraid or ashamed to contact a school or other agencies that are available to help. Students who are highly mobile may have missed part of their education. They might be learning at a “lower than grade level” rate or have difficulties socializing in a new school situation.
The SCCOE Students in Transition Program is dedicated to assisting families and youth to access their right to a free and appropriate public education. Students in Transition (SIT) offers trainings to school sites to help identify homeless children and has developed assistance models to connect families to services. SIT works cooperatively with teachers, administrators, school counselors and psychologists to ensure that homeless students are being served with their special needs in mind. Some can flourish by simply having the continuity and support that school offers while others need more than a place to learn. Students are offered backpacks and school supplies, clothing and shoe vouchers, bus passes and tutoring through the Write Start Project.

Introduction
The New College Graduate Psychology Program was founded in 1983, inspired by a vision of meaningful and transformative educational experience. Our program encourages the integration of political and psychological sophistication, of critical thinking and a commitment to work toward the creation of a more just and humane society. This vision informs our academic mission of educating individuals who can promote positive mental health in individuals, families, groups, and communities, and who will use their psychological understanding and analytical skills to advance the welfare of underserved or mis-served populations.
We provide a rigorous training in the intellectual legacy and practice of clinical work, from primarily psychodynamic and family systems perspectives. Our curriculum and pedagogy address the politics of gender, culture, race and sexuality. We seek to attract and educate a diverse group of students who will bring to their work a conviction and sensitivity that comes from their own experience.
The New College Graduate Psychology community strives to provide a forum in which people can expand upon the discipline of psychology and the work of being a psychotherapist in the current social, political, and economic climate. We argue that the psychological endeavor can be more than just turning inward. Our social constructionist perspective urges us to resist the slide into "psychology as usual" by reminding us that every question and answer has implications for our lives in a political world.

School Fund Raiser Ideas
Alternatives to Selling Junk Food and Sodas Check out the T-shirt guy at the following: WWW.295GUYS.COM ($2.95 custom logo t-shirts) In one small town in New Brunswick, Canada, students volunteer to do odd jobs for individuals and businesses and the money that is raised goes to the school.  There is lots of parental support for this and at the end of the "work" day, a spaghetti supper and dance is held for all volunteers.  They call it "Let John Do It", after the name of their school, John Caldwell School, Grand Falls.  It takes organization, but it is THE fundraiser for the school since it gets great support. Another fund-raiser that occurs in potato country in New Brunswick is that the elementary school sells "count boxes" of potatoes.  These are 50-pound boxes of uniformly sized, washed, baking potatoes that are generally only available to the restaurant trade.  This activity is well supported. How about a milk mustache drive.  Go to this site for more info (take Polaroids of the kids with milk mustaches and sell them for a dollar to the parents. There are many other ideas here as well.) http://whymilk.com/index.htm
