The standard unit of length in the metric system is the meter. Other units of length and their equivalents in meters are as follows:
1 millimeter = 0.001 meter
1 centimeter = 0.01 meter
1 decimeter = 0.1 meter
1 kilometer = 1000 meters We abbreviate these lengths as follows:
1 millimeter = 1 mm
1 centimeter = 1 cm
1 meter = 1 m 1 decimeter = 1 dm 1 kilometer = 1 km For reference, 1 meter is a little longer than 1 yard or 3 feet. It is about half the height of a very tall adult. A centimeter is nearly the diameter of a dime, a little less than half an inch. A millimeter is about the thickness of a dime.
Volume
The standard unit of volume in the metric system is the liter. One liter is equal to 1000 cubic centimeters in volume. Other units of volume and their equivalents in liters are as follows: 1 milliliter = 0.001 liter

Maximizing Data Center Reliability and Utilization Using Enterprise Energy Management Technology
Companies that own or lease data center space have the challenge of maintaining near 100% availability while keeping costs down. These goals are made more difficult by an environment of constant change, a minimum of operations staff, and an increasingly complex infrastructure of power distribution, reliability equipment, cooling systems and server loads.

Estimation, Measurement, and Computations Calendars and Time Measurement What better "time" to study the history and math behind our modern calendar than the beginning of a new year? Accurately tracking time has been one of man's obsessions throughout the ages, as you'll learn as you walk through time Looking for something a little more specific? The ancient Mayans kept very detailed calendars, using a 20-day system not unlike our week to record the passage of time. Discover more about the complex system the Mayans used to keep track of time at the Mayan Calendar site So when did society make the transition to today's calendar, the Gregorian? You can find out at the Julian and Gregorian Calendars site . Astonishingly, the calendar we use today is remarkably similar to one adopted by Julius Caesar in 46 B.C. Due to mathematical necessity, certain changes were made in the 16 th century.

NEW!!! Chinese Calendar Time measurement was an important occupation in ancient Chinese cultures and the Chinese calendar represents one of the longest unbroken sequence of time measurement in history. Along with time measurement, the recording and prediction of events in the sky were important factors in the development of the Chinese calendar and early Chinese mathematics. As the predictions of periodically recurring events in the sky began to be confirmed by observation, this led to the development of the calendar and mathematical astronomy. The Chinese calendar began around 2953 B.C. , and this ancient based on lunar cycles , is still in use. As Chinese culture spread, the calendar was adopted by many other societies, including people from Japan and Korea. The Chinese calendar was considered a sacred document , and falsification of the calendar was considered a capital crime. The accuracy of the calendar was also a political issue as each successive dynasty in China made its mark by introducing a new system of computing the calendar for improved accuracy. A group of imperial choronologers became employed for this purpose, and they served both historians and astronmers. The Chinese calendar, like most other calendars, is based on the apparent motion of the sun, moon and planets...

The South Asian Calendar
Voices Across Time
There are many cultures and calendars in South Asia, including India, Balgladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lankha. About 5,000 years ago, on January 21, 3102 B.C., a calendar called the Kali Yuga came into use in the region. This calendar is said to be based on a much older time scale, centered around the moon and solar system.
Kali Yoga
The modern Kali Yoga calendar was considered as a sacred document. It became popular throughout South Asia over the last 5,000 years, although it differed from region to region. During this time, some of the major versions of the Kali Yoga calendar was developed by followers of Jainism (569 B.C), Buddhism (544 B.C) and Hinduism, for example, during the parasurama era (176 B.C.). The Parasurama calendar was also used in parts of Southeast Asia. It is a solar calendar based on the Kali Yoga. The Buddhist calendar, which is a lunar calendar, is used extensively in Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Burma, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam; and in Sri Lanka. The new year begins with the full moon in the zodical month of Taurus (May). The Kali Yoga solar year, like the Western year, consists of 12 months, corresponding to the 12 signs of the zodiac. Each sign contains 30 degrees of the sky, totaling 360 degrees, or a full circle. The length of a solar month depends on the length of the apparent motion of the sun through each sign. This ranges from as few as 27 days during the shortest winter month, to as many as 32 days during the longest summer month.

Update (Jan-98)
"The calendar is a system designed to reckon time in periods convenient to the conduct of civil life. It is generally based on the natural cycles of moon phases and seasons since the moon has always influenced the timing of religious festivals, and the seasons have set the time of sowing and harvesting and so controlled economic life." [m126] This is an excellent definition illuminating the dual role of the calendar: religious matters that are arbitrarily timed and agricultural matters that must be precisely timed in the year. It is my opinion that the confusion of these agendas has led to most of the silliness in the calendar. We experience three natural cycles: the day, the month and the year. It is natural to assume that these are related but the illusion of stability that attends them belies the comedy of errors and false hope that is their history. Most of the energy spent in calendric pursuits has gone in the essentially fruitless task of reconciling the cycles of the sun (agriculture) and the moon (religion) using the doubly irreconcilable unit of the day. The following is an incomplete study of the evolution of the calendar that will give you a good idea of the nature of the beast. [p214]

BUDDHIST Year One marks the death of Buddha which was around 543 B.C. Not all Buddhists follow this calendar. The Tibetan monks follow a calendar that comes full cycle every 60 years. It is related to the Chinese calendar, with each year named after an animal and an element. The new year begins on the Gregorian day of Feb. 6, 2000 It will be the end of the year of the Earth Hare and the beginning of the Year of the Iron Dragon. CHINESE China's calendar was invented in the Gregorian year of 2637 B.C. It has been revised many times. It runs in 60 year cycles, each year named for a constellation and for one of 12 animals connected to the Chinese Zodiac. The Chinese calendar is now in the 16th year of the current cycle, the year of the Rabbit. The year of the Dragon starts on the Gregorian Feb. 5, 2000. ETHIOPIAN COPTIC CHRISTIANS Ethiopian Orthodox Christians date Christ's birth akin to the Gregorian year A.D. 7. The Ethiopian calendar is similar to ancient Egypt with 12 months of 30 days and a 13th month of five days.
