Partial Fractions
A WebQuest for Integral Calculus
Designed by José Luis Gómez-Muñoz http://homepage.cem.itesm.mx/lgomez/index.htm Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey Campus Estado de México Introduction: A Scientist or an Engineer usually has information about the rate of change of a quantity, therefore s/he needs to integrate in order to get useful information about that quantity. Integration (antiderivation) is so important that you will study it in different subjects (Integral Calculus, Differential Equations, Numerical Methods). "Partial Fractions" is the technique that allow us to write an algebraic fraction as an addition of simpler fractions. It is useful in many applications, but here we are going to investigate its usefulness in the context of solving integrals of algebraic fractions. The Task: You and your teammates will navigate Internet and the Digital Library searching for the explanations and examples about the use of "Partial Fractions" in integration. Then you will study those examples in order to answer the questions that you will find in part 2 of the section "The Process". You can start searching in the links in the "Resources" section, below in this document, however you must find at least three other new links, see the "Evaluation" section. The Process: Part I: Find Examples and Explanations of "Integration using Partial Fractions"

Maths or Mathematics Mathematics is the study of numbers and their form, arrangement and associated relationships, using rigorously defined literal, numerical and operational systems. Various forms of math are used in evolutionary biology to determine whether observed phenomena represent noteworthy probabilites as opposed to chance or random events. Statistical methods of various kinds are important in the presentation of data. Advanced academic degrees in the biological, chemical and earth sciences usually require a substantial background in maths.
Interesting topics within mathematics are grouped below. The section on online math tutorials may assist the student in search of increased understanding of concepts and methods. Subjects arelisted by increasing order of difficulty. Mastery of early material is usually required before advancing to the next level.
