at Jiskha : a comprehensive algebra site that provides clear explanations of
all major concepts, processes, and operations involved in algebra. Note: To navigate
the site, you will need to use you browser's "Back" button to return to the main
menu with some frequency. Recommended
Algebra
from ThinkQuest.org : it's not an interactive site, but you'll find very clear
explanations about how to solve pretty much any type of algebra-related problem
except, oddly enough, word problems. Go figure. Otherwise, everything you need to
know is here.
Algebra
at WebMath : If you're stumped on how to complete a problem, this site lets you type in the problem and then, it solves it for you, showing you every step in the solution! This is great resource for students who need to get those problem-solving steps down pat! Areas covered include factoring, polynomials, solving equations, simplifying expressions, and more.

General
Asymptote A line or curve that approaches a given curve arbitrarily closely. Curve A continuous map from a one-dimensional space to an n-dimensional space. Loosely speaking, the word "curve" is often used to mean the function graph of a two- or three-dimensional curve. Determinant (1) A function that assigns a scalar to a square matrix (or, equivalently, its linear transformation). (2) The value of this function for a particular matrix. The matrix has an inverse if and only if its determinant is non-zero. Parametric Equations A set of equations that together express a set of quantities as explicit functions of a number of independent variables, which are known as parameters. Plane A two-dimensional surface defined by linear equations.

I asked the RUME (Research on Undergrad. Math Education) email list to send suggestions of books that incorporated some of the research on how students learn pre-calc. Here's a compilation of responses: I would recommend David Dwyer and Mark Gruenwald's "Precalculus" from Brooks/Cole. I taught using their previous book "College Algebra and Trigonometry", and the new book is a subset better suited to a one semester course. I picked their text because it is very strong at modeling the effective use of calculators and has realistic applications. Please take a look at Demana, Waits, Foley, and Kennedy. The authors have tried to do what you look for within the constraints of trying to include the curricular pieces state education agencies seek.
