    • Before orientation week there is a pre-qualifier program run by senior graduate students. This intensive course culminates in the first written Qualifying Examination.
    • Orientation week is the week before classes (see the Duke University calendar for the correct dates).
    • First-year students will begin teacher training in the fall of their first year. As a result, they will be expected to take three courses in the fall, and four courses in the spring. Teacher training begins on Monday of orientation week. All students who will be financially supported by assisting with calculus laboratories must attend the training sessions. The details of teacher training can be found by viewing the

Teaching Interventions
The interventions, incorporating research on women's learning in mathematics, are designed to create a community of students engaged in collaborative problem-solving and other activities (both in class and in a separate support group), enhanced by an associated section of UNIV 101, an orientation class. The Focused Interest Group (FIG) for women in mathematics was publicized ( see FIG advertisement For legal reasons, the FIG was open to all students, but, as we anticipated, the emphasis on women's issues The Calculus I instructor drew on existing research in developing appropriate teaching strategies for the class. The central focus of the course was to establish a community based on our knowledge of how women learn best. The curriculum humanized mathematics; mathematical concepts were placed in context through problems that connected to students' interests, experiences, and relationships. Such contexts included world population growth, populations of endangered species, disposal of radioactive waste, spread of infectious disease, rate of absorption of drugs into the bloodstream, concentrations of pollutants in lakes and rivers, and inflation rates for car air bags.

Catherine A. Roberts
I am committed to a career of effective teaching and scholarly activity. I have an established record of quality teaching, publications in mathematics education, as well as extensive involvement of students in research projects. Relating the significance of mathematics as a tool for understanding and explaining the world is a fundamental component of my approach to teaching. I teach courses in Calculus, as well as a variety of courses in applied math (Numerical Analysis, Differential Equations, Mathematical Modeling, Environmental Math). My courses are web and email enhanced. I check email throughout the day and evening to respond to student questions. My web site includes scanned lecture notes, calculator programs, special hints and guides, and both blank (for practice) and solution copies of multiple versions of each exam. Student grade records are posted under secret-code names so that my students always know precisely where they stand in the course. My first years of teaching were a time of evolution and revolution in the development of my teaching style and philosophy. I consider my efforts during this time to have solidified my devotion to promoting student inquiry and student engagement through active learning. I support curriculum reform efforts even if these efforts are not as successful as we may hope because they require faculty to converse, analyze and reflect upon the way we teach. This process is a valuable exercise that improves student learning.
