How to Succeed in K-State Math Courses
The first step is to select a math course to take and make sure you have the prerequisites for it. To see what the prerequisites for a math course are, consult the K-State Catalog Course Descriptions which include the prerequisites for each of our math courses. To see if you are ready to take MATH 100 College Algebra or MATH 220 Calculus I, you can take a Math Placement Exam at the Academic Assistance Center (101 Holton Hall, phone 532-6492). You can also test out of MATH 100 College Algebra, MATH 150 Plane Trigonometry, and MATH 220 Calculus I at the

To take the calculus sequence you must have taken precalculus and trigonometry. What is calculus/Mathematica (Mathematics 155-156-163)?
http://titan.iwu.edu/~math/start.html
Illinois Wesleyan Pre-Engineering
Where will you start?
A begining mathematics student at Illinois Wesleyan University has more choices at the level of calculus than at most universities. Choices are good, of course, but this means that extra care must be taken in choosing where you should begin your study of mathematics here. Getting started in the right place will help insure that you are able to meet any math requirements of your major or pre-professional program, and help you get the most out of your mathematics education at IWU. So where should you start in mathematics at IWU? We're glad you asked. What is Analysis (Mathematics 165-166)? Analysis is a rigorous and sophisticated approach to calculus, normally for students who have had a year of high school calculus. Because of this more theoretical approach, students taking Analysis complete the normal three semester calculus sequence in two semesters.
  • Mathematics 161 is "standard" freshman calculus.

Information for Faculty/Staff Advisors
As an aid to advising a particular student, please print and complete the Student's Advising Questionnaire for General Education (Core) Mathematics. Objectives
  • To appropriately place our students in empowering, mainstream mathematics courses. To assist faculty/staff advisors in understanding general placement criteria, and in applying these criteria. To welcome faculty/staff/student participation in the evolution of these of recommendations.
Notes: Timing All of the Core Mathematics courses require demonstrated minimal "Mathematics Proficiency" before entry into these courses. For some students this will require remediation, either through MATH-090 "Elementary Algebra" or MATH-105 "Intermediate Algebra". Students who opt for the latter will be better equipped to succeed in the Core courses; some students may need both courses. According to the structure of the General Education Core, students must enroll in a Core Mathematics course in either the first or second year of university. Should MATH-090 or 105 be needed, it would seem reasonable to schedule these in the first year.

  • Students in algebra courses develop the algebra skills needed in later courses. Students in general education courses gain an understanding of mathematics as a language in which to express, define, and answer questions about the world. Students in courses that serve the sciences and engineering, particularly calculus and linear algebra courses, develop technical skills, learn to apply mathematical tools, and develop an understanding of the mathematical basis for those tools. Students in statistics courses develop an understanding of the basic concepts of probability and statistics and learn how to use statistical tools in real-life problems.

    THEA
The Texas Academic Skills Program or THEA test is a state test that covers reading, writing, and mathematics skills. If a student fails one or more sections of the test, they will be required to take developmental coursework in the area(s) of deficiency. In mathematics, once a student is initially placed in the developmental sequence, they work their way through the sequence then retake and pass the THEA test.
    Sequences
The Mathematics Department offers several courses in sequence to satisfy particular degree plans. See the individual course listings for more information.
    1. Calculus and Differential Equations.
The calculus sequence has three courses (Math 2413,Math 2414, and Math 2415) that meets four days per week and each course carries 4 hours credit. Differential equations is a 3-hour course that is only offered in the summer. These courses are for mathematics, engineering, and physics majors who will take the entire sequence, as well as other science majors such as chemistry, biological sciences such as pre-med., pre-dent, etc. who will take Calculus I and maybe Calculus II.
