2005-06 Undergraduate Catalog Academic Placement
Placement is an assessment of a student’s level of preparation in a subject. The purpose of placement is to help students enroll in the courses in which they are most likely to be successful. The following commonly taken courses require placement:
Who needs to review placement requirements for these courses? English Composition - All students, unless they already have college credit for English Composition. Calculus and General Chemistry - Students who are pre-health majors or who intend to pursue a science or engineering major probably need to take these courses. A number of business and technical majors require calculus. Students should check the information on each major of interest to determine if Calculus and/or General Chemistry are required.

General Education Courses Purpose: The Department of Mathematics’ general education courses aim to prepare students to communicate logically, become proficient at quantitative reasoning, and to think critically and analytically. The courses intend to enable students to deal comfortably with the basic notions of number and chance and to acquire mathematical tools to help reach their career objectives. University Level Courses: Mat 101, Mathematics for Elementary Teachers, develops students’ understanding of the mathematics needed to teach elementary school. Topics include sets, functions, logic, the real number system, number theory, and problem solving. The course is mainly for early childhood, elementary education, and special education majors. Mat 103, Introduction to Mathematics, is a liberal arts introduction to the nature and beauty of mathematics. Topics include logic, graph theory, probability, and decision theory. An additional topic is chosen from finance, geometry, and statistics.

1. Program Description
Physics, the fundamental natural science, provides explanations for a large number of physical phenomena through the use of a small number of general principles and concepts. These include theories of mechanics, statistical thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, optics and waves, solid state physics, atomic and nuclear physics, and quantum physics. The study of physics contributes to the students' understanding of the physical world and develops their abilities to reason analytically and to test hypotheses. The physics department at Southwestern College provides undergraduate instruction in a broad range of areas of physics to fulfill the needs and interests of a variety of students. The physics curriculum provides students with the knowledge and the conceptual and mathematical maturity needed to pursue careers in physics and related fields. The physics department also provides a curriculum to prepare secondary pre-service teachers to meet state certification requirements in physics. The physics department provides two semesters of introductory physics at two separate levels; algebra and trigonometry based instruction (College Physics) for students majoring in other fields (i.e. biology) and calculus based instruction (General Physics) for physics majors and others needing a more mathematically rigorous treatment. All intermediate and advanced courses in physics require General Physics. In addition, the B.S. in Chemistry, the B.A. in Mathematics, and most engineering schools require General Physics.

Students should complete four years of secondary mathematics designed for college bound students. Courses must include algebra, geometry, trigonometry, analytic geometry, and elementary functions. These functions include those that are linear, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, inverse trigonometric, and piece-wise defined. In particular, before studying calculus, students must be familiar with the properties of functions, the algebra of functions, and the graphs of functions. An understanding of the language of functions (domain and range, odd and even, periodic, symmetry, zeros, intercepts, and so on) is essential. The values of trigonometric functions and their common angles (0, II/6, II/4, II/3, II/2,...) must be known. Please note that many materials for this course, including handouts, assignments, videos, and other information will be distributed via download from the VSEN web pages.

1998-99 Catalog
It is agreed that students transferring from Mt. Hood Community College to Oregon Institute of Technology's Mechanical Engineering Technology program will be given full credit for all selected courses listed below. This agreement is based on the evaluation of the rigor and content of the general education and technical courses at both Mt. Hood Community College and OIT and is subject to a yearly reevaluation by both schools for continuance. This agreement is dated November 30, 1998. Baccalaureate students must complete a minimum of 60 credits of upper-division work before a degree will be awarded. Upper-division is defined as 300 and 400-level classes at a bachelor's degree-granting institution. Transfer students may guarantee their catalog of graduation by obtaining written approval from their OIT major department and the Registrar. The agreed upon catalog will be the one a student uses when he/she transfers to OIT. Students must enroll at OIT within two years of this approval.
