SUBJECT: General Guidelines for Core Curriculum Areas A-E
SOURCE: Memoranda from Senior Vice Chancellor to Academic Vice Presidents, June 5, 1996; August 22, 1996; October 4, 1996; November 18, 1996; January 15, 1997; November 13, 1997; and October 22, 1999; Memoranda from Deputy/Sr Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, July 2, 2000; May 4, 2001 General Education in the University System of Georgia From the origins of intellectual study to the present, general education has been a key to a fulfilling life of self-knowledge, self-reflection, critical awareness, and lifelong learning. General education has traditionally focused on oral and written communication, quantitative reasoning and mathematics, studies in culture and society, scientific reasoning, and aesthetic appreciation. Today, general education also assists students in their understanding of technology, information literacy, diversity, and global awareness. In meeting all of these needs, general education provides college students with their best opportunity to experience the breadth of human knowledge and the ways that knowledge in various disciplines is interrelated. In the University System of Georgia, general education programs consist of a group of courses known as the Core Curriculum as well as other courses and co-curricular experiences specific to each institution. The attainment of general education learning outcomes prepares responsible, reflective citizens who adapt constructively to change. General education programs impart knowledge, values, skills, and behaviors related to critical thinking and logical problem-solving. General education includes opportunities for interdisciplinary learning and experiences that increase intellectual curiosity, providing the basis for advanced study in the variety of fields offered by today's colleges and universities.

Academic Planning Educational Decisions Choosing a Major and Making Career Choices This is never a simple decision. Many students change majors at least once. Although you do not need to choose a specific major, you will need to choose a division when you register. If you are undecided, you are assigned to the College of Arts and Science for advising purposes. In most cases, if you use your first year to take courses that fulfill the Miami Plan and divisional requirements, you can still complete a major program with no delay. In order to complete some majors in a four year time period, you must begin them as a first year student. To make academic and career choices, you need to consider your interests and abilities. By now you probably have a strong sense of your academic strengths and weaknesses. Your interests, however, are still developing and, like more specific skills, depend on exposure to various activities and ideas. The Career Exploration and Testing Center in the Student Counseling Service, 196 Health Services Building, has reading materials, computer-assisted career guidance programs, and standardized career instruments to help you learn about your interests, abilities, and values and to relate them to your academic and career choices. Occupational and educational information are available to allow you to explore your options. Career assistants can help you work through the decision-making process and find needed resources; they can make career counseling appointments for you with the professional staff.

    Placement
What is Placement? Placement is an assessment of a student’s level of preparation in a subject. The purpose of placement is to help students enroll in the courses in which they are most likely to be successful. The following courses commonly taken by incoming students require placement. They include:
    • English Composition (ENC1101) Calculus 1 (MAC2311 and MAC2233) General Chemistry (CHM 2045) French, German, Latin and Spanish (if you have studied them previously)
Who needs to check placement requirements for these courses? English Composition . Every freshman, since General Education has a composition requirement that all students complete. Calculus and Chemistry . Does your major require these courses? Are you premed or a prehealth or an engineering major? Do you wish to take courses in an area that requires these courses? You also should check the eight-semester sequence for each major in the college section of this catalog. College level foreign language is required by two colleges: Liberal Arts and Sciences has a proficiency requirement; students in Journalism may choose language proficiency as an option.
