Major Explorers of New York State In 1493, Christopher Columbus returned to Spain from America with tales of his voyage to the islands he had discovered off the coast of what he thought was India. Soon other countries in Europe began sending ships to explore these new lands seeking the riches they might provide. One of their primary goals was also to try to find a quicker trade route to Asia, the land of silks and spices. This search for the Northwest Passage lead to many new discoveries and claims. By the early 16 th century (1500’s) France, Italy, and England had begun their explorations. John Cabot John Cabot, like Columbus, believed that Asia could be reached by sailing westward. Cabot, an Italian ship captain, made two voyages to the new world. In 1497, he sailed for the King of England. He reached the northern coast of North America in what today is part of Canada. He sailed southward, exploring possibly as far as New York. In 1498, Cabot returned to explore more of this new land.

Home Encyclopedia Summa Fathers ... Z John Cabot (Giovanni Cabota of Gabota.) A celebrated navigator and the discoverer of the American mainland, born in the first half of the fifteenth century at Genoa; date of death unknown. In 1461 he went to Venice and, after living there fifteen years, the prescribed residence for obtaining citizenship, was naturalized, 28 March, 1476. For this reason he is generally called a Venetian. On his commercial journeys, which took him to the shores of Arabia, he heard of the countries rich in spices which lay to the far East. This may have led him to conceive the plan of a great voyage of discovery. About 1490 he went to England with his three sons, Ludovico, Sebastiano, and Sancto, and settled there as an experienced seaman. he may have inspired the expedition that sailed from Bristol in 1491 to find the fabulous isles of the West. When the success of Christopher Columbus became known, Cabot acquainted himself most carefully with the theories and opinions of his countryman, and finally offered to do for England what Columbus had done for Spain. By letters patent of 5 March, 1496, King Henry VII granted Cabot and his three sons the right to seek islands and countries of the heathen towards the west, east, and north, with five ships under the English flag. Cabot began his preparations for the voyage at once and sailed from Bristol early in May, 1497, on the ship Matthew, with eighteen men, among whom may have been his son Sebastian. John Cabot Giovanni Caboto (Cabots Italian name, other spellings are used as well) was born in Genova, probably around 1451. However, already when he was a child, or maybe a young man, he moved to Venice. It was probably on hearing of Columbus's discovery of 'the Indies' that he decided to find a route to the west for himself. He went with his plans to England, because: He incorrectly thought the spiceries were coming from northern Asia Because a degree of longitude is shorter the further one is from the equator, the voyage from western Europe to eastern Asia would be shorter on higher latitudes. King Henry VII gave him a grant "full and free authoritie, leave, and power, to sayle to all partes, countreys, and seas, of the East, of the West, and of the North, under our banners and ensignes, with five ships ... and as many mariners or men as they will have in saide ships, upon their own proper costes and charges, to seeke out, discover, and finde, whatsoever iles, countreyes, regions or provinces of the heathen and infidelles, whatsoever they bee, and in what part of the world soever they be, whiche before this time have beene unknowen to all Christians." Cabot went to Bristol to make the preparations for his voyage. Bristol by then was the second-largest seaport of England, and during the past years (from 1480 onwards) several expeditions had been sent out to look for Hy-Brasil, an island that would lay somewhere in the Atlantic according to Celtic legends. Some people think Newfoundland may have been found on (one of) these voyages.
