A Case of Mistaken Identity!
Without complete maps of the world to guide them, the first Europeans (after the Vikings) set out hoping to find Asia. Setting sail and travelling west, they bumped into North America. Some thought they'd reached Asia, others thought they'd found a group of islands near China. They had found neither. This part of Passageways: True Tales of Adventure for Young Explorers website looks at these first European explorers of what would one day become Canada. John Cabot (1450?-1498?) made the first English voyage to North America. His voyage, in 1497, gave England a claim to the mainland of North America and led to the founding of the English colonies in America.
Cabot was born in Genoa, Italy. His name in Italian was Giovanni Caboto. As a boy, he moved to Venice, Italy, with his parents. He grew up there and became a mapmaker and trader. He sailed the Mediterranean Sea between Venice and Egypt, trading Italian goods for spices from the Far East. Cabot married and had three sons. He moved to Bristol, England, in the 1480's, and was living there when Christopher Columbus made his historic voyage to America for Spain in 1492.

http://www.linksnorth.com/canada-history/rediscovery.html
THE HISTORY OF CANADA Rediscovery and Exploration In 1497 an Italian named John Cabot sailed west from Bristol, England, intent on finding a new trade route to the Orient for his patron, King Henry VII of England. This voyage led to the rediscovery of the eastern shores of Canada. Cabot was as confident as Columbus had been that a new seaway was now open to Asia. On a second voyage, the following year, Cabot explored the coast of North America, touching at various pointsnone too clearly chartedfrom Baffin Island to Maryland. The Cabot voyages gave England a claim by right of discovery to an indefinite area of eastern North America. Its later claims to Newfoundland, Cape Breton Island, and neighboring regions were at least partly based on Cabot's exploits. Of more immediate significance were the explorer's reports of immensely rich fishing waters. The Roman Catholic countries of Western Europe furnished a market that made the ocean voyage worthwhile, even if it were made to gather the harvest of the sea instead of the spices and jewels of the Orient. Almost every year after 1497 an international mixture of fishing vessels could be seen on the offshore fisheries southeast of Newfoundland and east of Nova Scotia. Occasionally such ships even cruised into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. At times their crews encountered Indians along the shores who were willing to part with valuable furs in exchange for articles of little worth such as beads and other trinkets.

Chapter 3 - "Early European Explorers" Norwegians though there be very little record of it visited the most northern parts of eastern North America over a thousand years ago. Indeed, maybe before the Norwegians, the Irish paid a visit; or maybe, in classic times, the Greeks. However, what we do know, pretty well for sure, is that the Norsemen first came to Iceland, then as the decades and centuries unfolded they traveled beyond Iceland, to Greenland; and, then again, beyond Greenland to the shores of Baffin Island and Labrador; and then, swinging south, in their frail vessels, down they came along the upper coast of eastern North America. Whatever motivated these northern Europeans to keep extending their northern voyages, and exactly when they might have made them, are further matters on which we are obliged to speculate. Was it for timber? Was it new lands for splintered clans? Whatever the extent of their explorations and the timing of them, it is believed that any settlements of the Norsemen were but of a temporary kind and that they made no great impact or contribution to the exploration of North America. Before we deal with such known explorers as Cabot and Cartier, we must acknowledge the thousands of seafaring men, who, in the process of making a living, came to the shores of America, especially those that are washed by the waters that flow over the great fishing banks of the northwestern Atlantic. Discovery, like everything else in life, is an evolutionary process and one voyage by one family was built upon the knowledge gained on a previous voyage of another family member; only slowly did the Europeans become aware of their courses and their objectives that lie to the east over the ocean.

English men and women of the sixteenth century experienced an unprecedented increase in knowledge of the world beyond their island. Religious persecution at home compelled a substantial number of both Catholics and Protestants to live abroad; wealthy gentlemen (and, in at least a few cases, ladies) traveled in France and Italy to view the famous cultural monuments; merchants published accounts of distant lands like Turkey, Morocco, Egypt, and Russia; and military and trading ventures took English ships to still more distant shores. In 1496, a Venetian tradesman living in Bristol, John Cabot, was granted a license by Henry VII to sail on a voyage of exploration, and with his son Sebastian discovered Newfoundland and Nova Scotia; in 1583, Sir Humphrey Gilbert returned to Newfoundland to try to establish a colony there. The Elizabethan age saw remarkable feats of seamanship and reconnaissance. On his ship the
