Q Where can I get a Cable Modem?

A: If you already have Cable TV, your chances of getting a cable modem are decent, but they are still only available in major metropolitan areas. Canada seems to have quite a few ISP/Cable Companies that offer Internet Cable connections. Your best bet is to call your local cable company and ask what their plans are for adding Cable Modem Internet service in the future. You should also check with surrounding towns and other local Cable providers. If Cable Modems are not available, you should also check with your local Phone and Internet providers, since they may offer some form of xDSL connectivity, which is also fairly fast.

How to Determine Whether DSL or a Cable Modem Is Worth It
High-speed Internet access should be at least five times faster than what you can get with a 56K modem. But DSL and cable-modem services are expensive at the beginning of 2000, and the many "catches" and trade-offs associated with the newer technologies might mean you'll be better off waiting for increased competition, improved service, and lower prices. Basic Evaluation Factors Steps: Decide if you spend enough time on the Internet to justify paying for more speed. Consider the value of the time you spend online. Will increased speed help you conduct a business better? Or will it just enhance your leisure surfing? Expect legislation, court decisions, and other future government regulation to affect digital online services and use and cost of them in the next couple of years. Expect access fees to change as the services develop.

How to Get a Cable Modem
Even though at the beginning of 2000 only 17 percent of North American homes had access to a cable Internet connection, availability is expanding quickly. When cable access arrives in your area, you might want to take advantage of its excellent speed potential. Steps: Find out if your local cable television provider currently offers Internet service in your area. (If your local cable system is not yet set up for Internet connections, you won't be able to get a cable modem.) Check the Web sites of @Home Network (the largest cable Internet service), Road Runner Group, High Speed Access Corporation and SoftNet Systems to see if they offer service through your cable company. Check computer and consumer electronics chains in your area to see if you can arrange for cable service through a store. Consider your current satisfaction with service, especially customer service, provided by your cable television company before choosing it to be your ISP.

    87. Prerequisites
First, plug in and turn on the cable modem. Connect your Ethernet card to They will also need the MAC (Media Access Control) hardware address of your

    2. Prerequisites
    2.1. Networking and Ethernet Support
Most, if not all, cable modems are easily configured for use with Linux. Most cable modems have two possible interfaces for connection to your computer: Ethernet or USB. If your version of Linux is like most, there is very little you will need to do to to get your cable modem working with an Ethernet interface as long as you have support for networking and the driver for your specific networking hardware installed.
    2.2. Ethernet Support
An open Ethernet interface is the most likely means that a cable provider will use or recommend when setting up your cable internet service. Your ISP may even deliver and/or install a new NIC card to access the modem if you have no open Ethernet cards available. The cable connects to the modem, which then connects to your NIC using ordinary 10BaseT/100BaseT Ethernet cable. If you are uncertain about any of the above, and your modem and/or NIC are not already physically installed for you, read the Ethernet HOWTO and your cable modem's instruction manual before proceeding any further.

    88. Configuration
Note the HWaddr field, or hardware address, on the first line. This is the same as the MAC, This is the interface your cable modem will use.

    3. Configuration
3.1. Ready to Start With an Ethernet-Modem connection
Once you are plugged into the system, your modem is on and your dhcp server is running as outlined in Section 2.5 , you should be provided your own IP address that doesn't change unless you drop the lease (i.e. are offline) for a while. To confirm that the DHCP client is working and you have a new IP address, execute (as root) ifconfig without any other arguments, and you should see the following: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:D0:09:DE:D4:6F inet addr:66.190.XXX.XXX Bcast:255.255.255.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:2591777 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:5589 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:100 RX bytes:168673636 (160.8 MiB) TX bytes:1752872 (1.6 MiB) Interrupt:12 Base address:0xc400 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:5168 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:5168 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:1695104 (1.6 MiB) TX bytes:1695104 (1.6 MiB) ...which shows the system loopback device

    Firewall Protection:
Physics recommends (extremely - just short of demanding!) that all broadband computer systems used to connect back to Physics be installed behind a basic firewall. Computer systems that are attached to high speed Internet connections are natural targets for crackers intending to attack other computer systems. The high speed connection allows your machine to "flood" another system with garbage information that overwhelms the other machine. When your machine is taken over, it is known as a "zombie". Scores of zombies are coordinated by the attacker in a DDOS (Distributed Denial-Of-Service) attack such as the one in February 2000 against the CNN website (in which a Physics Department machine was implicated). You don't want the FBI knocking on your door! Because your Internet connection is always on and your IP address never changes (unlike a dial-up connection) your machine can be more easily subverted.
