utterflies are among the most beautiful and marvelous creatures in all of nature. Tropical Central and South America is the richest region in the world for butterflies, but they are found in many other places as well. Costa Rica has over 1300 species. A butterfly's life begins with a very tiny egg laid on a leaf. From this develops a larva, the butterfly's caterpillar stage. Eventually, the larva makes a cocoon or chrysalis. Safe inside, it develops into a pupa. Eventually, a beautiful butterfly is released from this container, flying heavenward, fully-developed. What an astounding transformation, from a humble, earth bound worm-like creature to a delicate flying wonder!
The adult usually eventually returns to the very plant or tree trunk where it grew up. There it lays its own eggs and begins the process anew (a 2 to 3 month cycle). Did you know that...
The color in a butterfly's wings does not come from pigment. The color is produced prism-like by light reflected by their transparent wing scales.
Stranger yet, no moth or butterfly eats solid food (though some butterflies drink nectar); some can not even take in moisture.

Kids can use this butterfly unit to investigate changes in their own lives
HANDS-ON SCIENCE: FROM CATERPILLARS TO BUTTERFLIES
Concepts: Insects undergo dramatic changes throughout their life cycle. All living things change during their lifetimes. Skills: observing, predicting, measuring, communicating, comparing, and contrasting.
Vocabulary
caterpillar: the larval stage of a butterfly or moth chrysalis: the hard shell covering the pupa; shaped like an upside down teardrop larva: the second stage of metamorphosis, during which an insect is wormlike and has new wings pupa: the third stage of metamorphosis; encased by a chrysalis metamorphosis: a series of developmental stages often marked by body changes
Finding the Caterpillars
The best way to find caterpillars is to locate their food source. Monarch caterpillars feed only on milkweed. Several species of this common wildflower grow throughout the United States. To find the yellow-black-and-white-striped caterpillars, lift the plant's leaves. Gently pull the caterpillars off and transport them in a ventilated jar to school. If you'd rather purchase caterpillars, see the resource box on the next page for ordering information.

Butterflies (Lepidoptera - Rhopalocera):
Endangered / Protected Species
European Red Lists
The IUCN collection of Red Lists on the Net is very incomprehensive in regard of insects. So here are the data I have collected from a variety of sources. As some countries like Spain or Germany distinguish several degrees of threat within the status "Endangered" while others just use four main categories I reduced their number of status categories to keep the lists simple and comparable. This means that the data provided here should not be taken as "official" lists. I do my best to correct and update the information continuously, though. Namely in regard of Germany I also list species which are protected by law although not threatened (yet). One may ask, what the use of Red Lists is, anyway. One offical purpose is to protect the species specified there from being killed, collected, or disturbed. But since butterflies are mainly threatened by habitat destruction, use of insecticides etc. this seems a pretty superfluous idea. Collecting most likely is their least important threat. But Red Lists might serve as indicators for the destruction or recovery (!) of nature. Status categories: X = Extinct
E = Endangered (resp. "threatened")

Identifying Birds
Attracting Butterflies
There is absolutely no denying that gardeners have a deep love of nature. Not only do they love their flowers and vegetables, lawns and shrubs, they also love the animals that attracted by the fruits of their hobby. Among those creatures of nature, are a wide range of colorful and beautiful butterflies. Almost weightless and seemingly floating on the breeze, Butterflies in the yard bring delight to young and old alike. If you are looking to attract Butterflies to your yard, you need to know but one single word......Nectar. And with that one word, we give the advantage to gardeners in luring them. A gardener knows that the nectar come from a variety of flowers that he or she can grow in flower gardens to feed the butterflies. The more nectar in the flower, the more popular the plants will be to a butterfly. It will also work to attract many species of birds and bees, too. Did you know?

I suppose that this would be the good idea to show my world to all interested persons, who are curious about the russian people and Russia, still far and enigmatic (for the "Western" people). I hope you will find a lot of interesting here, if you like wildlife and outdoors activity. So, welcome and enjoy!
