BUTTERFLIES AND THEIR LARVAL FOODPLANTS (Animation by Lisa Konrad Photographed and compiled by Peter J. Bryant pjbryant@uci.edu ) Department of Developmental and Cell Biology, University of California Irvine CA Butterflies can be attracted to your garden by providing suitable flowers from which they can obtain nectar. Most butterflies can utilize a wide variety of flowers, including those of many cultivated varieties, as nectar sources. However, a more critical need is for the plants which provide food for the larval (caterpillar) stages, and most species will accept only one or a few species of plants at this stage. If a butterfly is found near your area, you can probably attract it and increase its population by planting the correct foodplants for the caterpillars. Although the caterpillars will feed on the leaves of these plants, the damage is usually minor and only temporary. Caterpillars of some species feed on plants which are usually considered weeds, and you can benefit populations of these species by not removing all of the weeds. The following table lists the larval foodplants for most of the butterfly species and a few of the more interesting moths found in Orange County . Many of the listed plants are available from Tree of Life Nursery in San Juan Capistrano . A more extensive discussion of the biology of our local butterflies can be found in Getting into Butterflies by Larry Orsak (Animation by Lisa Konrad

Talycada nyseus - Red Pierrot Sri Lanka is a tropical island that lies off the south eastern tip of India, just north of the equator. It is approximately 250 miles long by 150 miles wide. Though small, it has varied climatic and geographical zones. From the capital city of Colombo, within a distance of 70 miles as the crow flies, one goes from sea level to over 8000 feet. The changes in elevation, annual rainfall, and the underlying geology has given rise to a diversity of plant species and in different ecological zones The fauna and flora of Sri Lanka contain many endemic species as well as species that are closely related to those of the Indian sub-continent. We hope that this site inspires you to take a greater interest in the world of insects and their conservation. If you like to share your sightings of Sri Lankan butterflies and dragonflies, please send us your information. Site designed, written and maintained by Michael and Nancy van der Poorten. Discovering Life on a Living Planet
Butterflies and Moths
Between 150,000 and 200,000 known species of the order Lepidoptera ("scale-wing") live wherever vegetation exists. Adult butterflies and moths usually have wings with overlapping scales covering transparent membranes. When we handle butterflies and moths, the "dust" that comes off is composed of these minute scales. Wing colors and patterns result from either pigments in the scales or their physical structure. Some species' scales refract light, producing iridescent bands of color. While for us their wing colors are the source of delight, for butterflies and moths they serve practical purposes, including camouflage and sexual self-advertisement.

December 1999 Planting gardens with flowers that attract butterflies is a natural way to attract these lovely creatures to your yard, garden, patio, or even window sill. Brightly colored butterflies provide interest to your surroundings and are also effective crop and flower pollinators. Your butterfly garden will also attract birds and other wildlife. Before you begin your butterfly garden it is important to know something about butterflies and about their life cycles, biology, and behavior. Butterfly Life Cycle All butterflies have the same general life cycle, consisting of four life stages: egg, larva (the caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult (the butterfly). Each stage has special food and environmental needs. The cycle begins when butterflies deposit eggs, which they may do in the spring, summer, or fall. Eggs differ in size and shape depending on the species. Butterflies can lay anywhere from 200 to 1,500 eggs depending on the species. Some are laid singly, some in clusters. A good nectar source is important to the adult's ability to produce large numbers of eggs. In most cases, eggs hatch within a few days of being deposited. Once a caterpillar is full size, it enters the pupal or chrysalis stage. Using silk produced by silk glands, the caterpillar attaches itself to a plant (or other object). Some butterflies, such as skippers, pupate inside a thin covering of silk and leaves. The caterpillar stays still for about a day as the pupal skin forms under the caterpillar skin. Then the old skin splits open and the pupa emerges. Pupae of some kinds of butterflies can be green or brown. The pupae of monarch butterflies are bright green.
