Butterfly Season - Spring 2005 The butterfly season has commenced with numerous Holly Blues seen already, along with sightings of Speckled Wood, Small Tortoiseshell and Peacock. As the season progresses many more species will soon appear. These pictures of a female Holly Blue on a Euonymus bush were taken last year in April. The distinctive black margin on the fore-wings of this first-generation female will be more pronounced in the second-generation. Last year was a particularly good year for Holly Blues in Ireland and this is likely to be repeated this year.

Butterflies are beautiful, flying insects with large scaly wings. Like all insects, they have six jointed legs, 3 body parts, a pair of antennae, compound eyes, and an exoskeleton.
