Butterflies of Ireland
This site contains a photographic guide to the Butterflies of Ireland. The butterfly species are divided into four groups: Small, Brown, White and Multi-coloured butterflies. There is a section entitled 'General Information' which should be read first, as among other information, it gives details of the format of this guide. Finally, there is a section giving details of some Butterfly Farms in Ireland.
This site is a more comprehensive guide compared to the original site which contained a basic guide to Irish Butterflies. Butterfly Season - Spring 2005
The butterfly season has commenced with numerous Holly Blues seen already, along with sightings of Speckled Wood, Small Tortoiseshell and Peacock. As the season progresses many more species will soon appear. These pictures of a female Holly Blue on a Euonymus bush were taken last year in April.
The distinctive black margin on the fore-wings of this first-generation female will be more pronounced in the second-generation. Last year was a particularly good year for Holly Blues in Ireland and this is likely to be repeated this year.

Seasons of Nature in New England
- Early Autumn - Photos of fall foliage in New England
Black bears are gaining weight for the winter - feeding heavily on acorns and beechnuts, where available. White-tailed bucks are establishing their dominance hierarchy through ritualized sparring and displays. The oak trees are shedding their acorns - providing food for many species of wildlife. The mating calls of crickets and grasshoppers are in the air. Monarch butterflies have begun their migration south. Most will spend the winter in Mexico - usually arriving there in November. Usually by mid-September, the leaves of the red maples are just beginning to change color. The fall foliage season usually reaches its peak around the first week of October - although it varies a great deal from year to year.

ALL ABOUT BUTTERFLIES! What is a Butterfly? Butterfly or Moth? Senses Defense Mechanisms ... Butterfly Gardens
What is a Butterfly?

Butterflies are beautiful, flying insects with large scaly wings. Like all insects, they have six jointed legs, 3 body parts, a pair of antennae, compound eyes, and an exoskeleton. The three body parts are the head, thorax (the chest), and abdomen (the tail end). The butterfly's body is covered by tiny sensory hairs. The four wings and the six legs of the butterfly are attached to the thorax. The thorax contains the muscles that make the legs and wings move. FLYING Swallowtails are strong fliers. Butterflies are very good fliers. They have two pairs of large wings covered with colorful, iridescent scales in overlapping rows. Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) are the only insects that have scaly wings. The wings are attached to the butterfly's thorax (mid-section). Veins support the delicate wings and nourish them with blood.
