Family Biz Tax Give-Back
A new tax law may let family businesses keep more money in the bank. Find out if your business will be one that benefits.
By Joan Szabo Family-business owners are among the winners of tax benefits under the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004. The law makes as many as 10 different changes to S-corporation rules, but the changes affecting family-business owners are considered to be among the most significant. (Experts note that the majority of family businesses are organized as S corporations.) The major benefit of S-corp. status is that owners generally pay less in federal taxes. With an S corp., income is typically taxed only once, at the owner level. Under a regular C corporation, it's taxed twiceonce at the corporate level and again at the shareholder level when it's distributed. Starting this year, the law boosts the allowable number of shareholders in an S corp. from 75 to 100. In addition, it allows up to six generations of one family to elect to be treated as one shareholder. As a result, it will be easier for larger family-owned corporations to qualify for and retain S-corp. tax status. "As families grow and multiply over the years, some have started to bump up against the 75-shareholder limit," says Greg W. Smith, senior tax manager with

All In the Family Business
You must understand these five family dynamics to stay focused and successfully manage your kin.
By David G. Javitch You say you've got some issues with the family members you work with? What's the problem? You're all family—you should be able to get along together. But that's where you're wrong. Because no matter what your business is—selling, buying, servicing or producing—the challenges of working with family members are the same. And they're not often easy to deal with. Special issues crop up in family-run businesses that don't occur anywhere else. Or the same issues you see in non-family businesses seem more intense in a family-run company. Just what are these issues I'm referring to? Here are a few of the more common ones: 1. Birth order: The "older brother" or "older sister" syndrome involves people viewing the eldest child as more powerful, more "special" or more entitled due to their birth order at the head of the pack. 2. Position nepotism:

CAROL CAIN/SMALL BUSINESS: Expo covers work-family conflicts
August 1, 2005 BY CAROL CAIN
FREE PRESS COLUMNIST Like weathercasters going ga-ga over the next big storm, the business community should be up in arms over the potential impact of aging American families on nearly every company. But nowhere is the impact more pronounced than at smaller companies, where having just one employee out of commission because of a family issue can be a huge problem. Often called the "sandwich generation," many baby boomers juggle kids, aging parents and careers. And as those boomers juggle, they're sometimes forced to miss work, taking time off for extended periods to deal with family matters. Sometimes, the impact is even more subtle as their productivity starts to slide and the employer is clueless as to why. "We have to take time to deal with these issues or they will only get worse," says Jennifer Kluge, 34, executive vice president of the
