From front-of-the-room consoles that look like command stations, instructors are orchestrating ceiling-hung computer image and video projectors, sophisticated lighting controls, computers, VCRs, and other technology that is enriching their courses in ways not otherwise technically or financially feasible. Teachers in the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Department have abandoned the traditional lecture method in favor of an active learning approach. The department spent three years researching new methods of teaching, and subsequently redesigned the entire engineering curriculum to incorporate media-enhanced lectures, computer-assisted instruction, and group collaboration. Business faculty augment classroom work with cases and teaching notes on the Intranet. And a state-of-the-art distance classroom lets the Katz Graduate School of Business offer MBA programs to students in Prague and Sao Paulo. Enron … Arthur Anderson … Tyco … ImClone … Martha Stewart … WorldCom … Global Crossing … Merrill Lynch … Rite-Aid … Qwest … Adelphia … Kmart … HealthSouth … the list of formerly respected businesses (and business leaders) being charged with breaches of ethical conduct seems to be growing by the day. This is having adverse effects on our economic well-being, on investor confidence, and on the perceived desirability of pursuing business as a respectable calling for earning one’s living in today’s world. Commenting on this current ethical crisis in business leadership, Professor Eileen Kelly [1, p. 4] of Ithaca College makes these sobering observations: Recently a new business scandal seems to surface each day. The current volatility of the market reflects the apprehension, the sense of betrayal, and the lack of confidence that investors have in many large corporations and their managements. Massive accounting frauds and continuing restatements call into question the accuracy of financial statements of numerous public corporations and the corresponding veracity of stated revenues and profits. Even companies with sterling reputations are now often suspect. A basic sense of trust and fair play is an essential cornerstone of any economic system, especially a free-market system. In the absence of such trust, chaos reigns. Clearly the ethical bankruptcy of some corporate leaders has caused considerable disruption in the markets. Fortunately, the fundamental soundness of our financial system has withstood the onslaught. The current wave of business scandals involves not only outright criminal activity, but also a grayer area in which companies met the letter of the law, while they breached the ethical expectations of many stakeholders.

"Philosophy" of Teaching - P.S. Ruckman, Jr. Approaches to teaching are numerous and vary considerably. I make no claim to having captured the "best" method of teaching. Although I have been teaching in Colleges and Universities for over ten years, I have certainly not reached a point in my career where I feel that I have perfected the "art" - even by my own standards. I constantly analyze my performance in and out of the classroom and seek ways to improve my methods and adapt to changing circumstances. While I sense the importance of change, there are discernable themes in the structure of my classes, my conduct in classroom, my interaction with students (in and out of the classroom) and the expectations that I carry to examinations.     My Philosophy of Teaching
    Let there be creativity! I
    nstructors must be in love with creative ideas. They must generate enormous latent energy. My personal experience has thought me that the success of students is highly proportional to the enthusiasm of their instructors. Thus, instructors must be full of energy. That energy will emanate motivation and inspire creativity. The layers of walls surrounding our creativity should be always the targets. Ironically, many initial attempts to break down those walls may require such an attitude, which can be perceived as craziness. Indeed, creativity is the neighbor of insanity, though they are the farthest angular points on the circle. Creativity needs a special mood. Instructors must recognize that mood. They must be bold and active enough to haunt that mood in each class. They must take the entire class with them from the frozen climate to the mysterious ambiance of creativity. They should encourage them to think differently. Creativity is one of the most distinct traits of Homo sapiens. An idea as little as a seed with its bitter taste may be pregnant to a great product. An idea as quick as lightning with its dazzling brightness can create a tremendous fire. A word may create a revolution. An invention, as small as computer chips, may change the global economy. Creativity was defined as "The defeat of habit by originality" by George Lois (whoever he is) or "the power to connect the seemingly unconnected" by Willam Plomer (don't know him either). Without our creative genes and the need for creativity, humans would be still living in caves. As Martin Luther King put, "human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted." More or less, every human being carries those genes. All is needed is to locate and tickle those genes: they will transform to jinnis released from the lamp.

    Benjamin Aberant has won the
    Dr. Hu Harries Medal in business. This year's top University of Alberta School of Business graduate boasts a résumé crammed with experiences as varied as student government, extracurricular campus activities and a four-year stint in the U.S. Marines. Benjamin Aberant, an Edmonton native and a graduate of McNally Composite High School, is the winner of this year's Dr. Hu Harries Medal in Business. The award is awarded annually to students graduating from the School of Business with the highest academic standing in the final two years of the BCom program. Aberant said that the award is a great honour and remained modest about his accomplishments. "I felt really honoured since the Faculty of Business has many really top students in it. It was never my goal to win an award. I just studied as hard as I could. But I did always want to get the best mark that I could. I was humbled when I found out about the award," said Aberant. Instead of going straight into university or taking a year off to backpack through Europe, Aberant opted to follow his childhood dreams of military service. During his service as an infantryman for four years with the United States Marine Corps, he was stationed in Japan, Korea and Australia while earning various military awards.
