Purpose

Purpose I currently use the Business School LAN and the University's Web Course in a Box (WCB) to distribute class materials and hold class discussion forums. I provide access to materials from the two sites since some students prefer to work from home and LAN is not accessible for students except from the second floor labs. While I do not expect to turn my classes into 100 distance learning classes, I do believe that the Internet is a useful method for delivering class materials, quiz solutions and additional practice exercises, as well as receiving assignments and questions from students. Furthermore, using the Internet allows me an easy method of updating materials and eliminates the need for copying and distributing materials. The initiative is on students to access material as needed. It also forces them to recognize the important role that computers will play in their professional careers. I have two specific directions in which I would like to expand the way in which I use technology to enhance instruction. First I would like to introduce interactive materials into my undergraduate tax course, Bus 405. In addition to allowing students to use my WCB page as a delivery system for distribution of materials, I would like to use JAVA and JavaScripting to add tutorials and quizzes to my web material.

(Article dated 10/91, from Student Lawyer, a publication of the ABA Student Lawyer Section by Dale Moss) Comment: This article is rather old but it is the only one on the subject I am aware of. Even in the event there are more recent articles it is doubtful these serious problems going to the root of many of the legal profession's problems have been resolved. Fifteen minutes into the class precisely one student has spoken. The rest, with edgy apprehension, look down at the floor, the desks, their bookseverywhere but at their guest teacher. Although it sounds like a high-school session on personal hygiene, these averted faces actually belong to a class on professional responsibility at an American law school. Trying to draw the class out by playing a client seeking counsel, the instructor removes his jacket. "Do I have to take off my tie, too, to convince you? I'm a printer. Talk to me," he pleads. No dice. There is enough free-floating anxiety in this room to power a small city for a year, but not enough engagement, it seems, to get a minor league discussion going. Finally the teacher, himself a practicing attorney, throws up his hands in exasperation: "Lawyers are supposed to be helpful to people. If you disagree with this, please go to another school." Why is the course on professional ethics almost universally regarded as the dog of the law school hard to teach, disappointing to take, and often presented to vacant seats or vacant minds?

EVENT-BASED ENTREPRENEURSHIP: THE IMPACT OF CASE STUDY LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE ATLANTA CENTENNIAL OLYMPICS TO SYDNEY 2000 STRATEGIES Abstract: This paper presents a number of case study lessons learned by successful and unsuccessful small businesses during the 1996 Summer Olympic games in Atlanta, Georgia; and constructs a descriptive model from which implications and recommendations are drawn for small businesses interested in the 2000 Summer Olympic games in Sydney, Australia. There were two major reasons for undertaking Olympic businesses case studies. The first purpose is to develop a theoretical framework of critical factors to businesses specifically catering to the significant increase in perceived demand for goods and services that arise when staging an Olympics. The second major purpose of undertaking Olympic businesses case study is to apply the lessons learned from the descriptive model in constructing a normative model for businesses gearing up for a future Olympiad. Businesses expecting to make a quick fortune out of the Sydney Olympics are likely to be disappointed, as the experiences of entrepreneurs in Atlanta indicate that it would not be an easy task. The study found that the businesses most likely to be successful are ones that are already established with surplus funds to deploy into new ventures in which they can afford to take risks.

As a ninth grader, Shelly started the Wilson HS Gay Straight Alliance (GSA). She enjoys singing with her pop group, "Something Else", and making independent films.
Jayson Beyette from Port Orchard overcame personal challenges and job discrimination to become a LGBT community activist. A leader in the successful Tacoma United For Fairness "No on Initiative One" campaign, he will study business administration at WSU and wants to work for a Gay Rights organization.
Mara Caden tries to be passionate about everything. She loves authentic teaching-inspiring students to learn on their own. After graduating from Seattle's Nova HS she will pursue her interests in social change, literature and music at Mount Holyoke in Massachusetts.
Brian Carhart from Rathdrum, Idaho, is studying sociology and American Indian Studies at the UW and will become a teacher. A tireless activist, he is Outreach Coordinator for the East African Center, manages the Hot Shots soccer team, works at Camp Ten Trees, and will present a workshop on cultural diversity at the Idaho 4-H Teen Conference in June.

A young man applies for a sales manager's position at a cellular service network. He passes through the many stages of a selection process that boiled down to extracting as much information as possible on the finance indexation and shareholders at the candidate's previous place of employment. At the end of a one month trial period, he is told that the sum total of administrative fines due to be cut from his $1,525 salary is $1,500. This example from The Black List project conducted by Euromanagement, an HR consultancy firm that runs the Web site www.conflict.ru, is one of many situations encountered by job seekers. For many Russian businesses, business ethics remain terra incognita . Even some entrepreneurs who decide to enroll in time-consuming and expensive MBA programs view business ethics and social responsibility as obstacles imposed from outside. Among the painfully few structures in St. Petersburg that possess relatively solid experience in teaching business ethics, each follows a strategy of its own to reach the common goal -showing that business ethics is in fact an effective tool to make a profit. Experts in the field are convinced that as businesses become longer-term profit oriented, ethics will naturally become an indispensable component. However, they add, by teaching ethics extensively in MBA programs the process can be catalyzed.

During a recognition luncheon to be held in conjunction with the Board’s May meeting, a faculty member from each UNC campus will receive a commemorative bronze medallion and a $7,500 cash prize. The 16 recipients, representing an array of academic disciplines, were nominated by special committees on their home campuses and selected by the Board of Governors Committee on Personnel and Tenure, chaired by John W. Davis III of Winston-Salem. The awards will be presented by UNC President Molly Corbett Broad and Board of Governors Chairman J. Bradley Wilson of Cary.

But doing this requires that all of us choose safety. Personal choices are receiving a lot of attention in transportation safety. How do we encourage individuals to make smart and rational decisions? In automobile safety, we've spent decades hardening cabins, installing airbags, perfecting crumple zone dynamics, and testing crash avoidance systems. Yet, most observers agree, dramatic improvements in reducing motor vehicle fatalities will only be achieved when drivers consistently exercise good judgment by wearing seat belts, not driving while drunk or drowsy, and not running red lights.

The technology modern forensics investigators have at their disposal amazes me. Gas chromatograph mass spectrometers, hemoglobin-reacting luminol, fingerprint-matching database apps, mitochondrial DNA tools you name it, they've got it. And the stuff works. But there's one area where law enforcement technology is lagging, even though the applications exist to remedy the situation: data-sharing between agencies. Enter the University of Central Florida, and its FINDER system. The Florida Integrated Network for Data Exchange and Retrieval is a pioneering network that boosts cross-jurisdictional communication between that state's 355 law enforcement agencies. Detectives query the system based on criminals' names or other identifying criteria, and then specify which databases in the network they want to search. Queries bounce off the data sources and return summary reports with hyperlinks to relevant information. In short, the system transforms raw, far-flung data into precise intelligence, which is the very core of BI. You can read about Florida's initiative here Individuals who commit crimes in multiple locales bank robbers or serial murderers, for instance often get away with their deeds because law enforcement officials can examine patterns or similarities only from within their jurisdiction. They can act only on the data they have at hand. This is a problem on the national level in the United States and in other countries, and even a challenge within states or provinces. The Florida system, which is in the early going, is designed to broaden the data view for law enforcement and enable queries against that information.

November 1993 This Report presents the findings of an assessment in November 1993 of the quality of education provided in law by the University of Derby. The assessment derives from an analysis of the self-assessment and other information provided by the University and a visit by a team of subject specialist assessors. There are 9,000 full-time and part-time students at the University. The Law Division was established in 1992 as part of the Derbyshire Business School and is expected to be transferred to the provisionally-named School of European and International Studies early in 1994. Law is offered as a three-year LLB scheme and as part of the University of Derby Credit Accumulation and Modular Scheme (CAMS). Both full-time and part-time routes are available. There are 180 LLB and 209 CAMS students enrolled on courses within the Law Division. There is a teaching staff of nine full-time and three part-time members. All teaching takes place in the main buildings of the campus.
