121. The Biological Basis Of Ethics, By Peter Singer
Chapter excerpted from 'The Expanding Circle ethics and Sociobiology' (Oxford, 1981).
http://www.utilitarian.net/singer/by/1981----.htm
The Biological Basis of Ethics Peter Singer Excerpted from The Expanding Circle: Ethics and Sociobiology , New York, 1981, pp. 23-53 We should all agree that each of us is bound to show kindness to his parents and spouse and children, and to other kinsmen in a less degree; and to those who have rendered services to him, and any others whom he may have admitted to his intimacy and called friends; and to neighbours and to fellow-countrymen more than others; and perhaps we may say to those of our own race more than to black or yellow men, and generally to human beings in proportion to their affinity to ourselves. HENRY SIDGWICK, The Methods of Ethics Every human society has some code of behavior for its members. This is true of nomads and city-dwellers, of hunter-gatherers and of industrial civilizations, of Eskimos in Greenland and Bushmen in Africa, of a tribe of twenty Australian aborigines and of the billion people that make up China. Ethics is part of the natural human condition. That ethics is natural to human beings has been denied. More than three hundred years ago Thomas Hobbes wrote in his Leviathan: During the time men live without a common Power to keep them all in awe they are in that condition called War; and such a war, as is of every man against every other man.... To this war of every man against every man, this also is consequent; that nothing can be Unjust. The notions of Right and Wrong, Justice and Injustice have there no place.

  • Introduction
If you use search engines for searching, you've probably wondered how they choose which of the million hits to display first. If you've ever tried to get your site listed in a search engine, you've probably wondered how to get your site listed first so people will be able to find your web site. Based on current experience in getting the Saint Louis Cultural Flamenco Society website listed, I've found some interesting information on search engines and the tradeoff between economics and ethics. Please note I have no financial interest or ax to grind in this work. It would have saved me some time if I had understood the following before trying to get the website on the search engines. Our goal is to be listed in the first few entries when someone types "Saint Louis Flamenco" into their search engine. Since there is only one flamenco group in Saint Louis, this would seem a reasonable goal. The society is in no way controversial. With some knowledge of the search engines, the website has been designed to be easy for search engines to look over. The Saint Louis Cultural Flamenco Society website, I hope you will agree, is a website suitable for viewing by people of any age. There is no sex, violence, foul language, hate group writing. The website is a high quality website that is easy to use to get the information you want about our flamenco group in Saint Louis. The society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the arts. Like most such organizations, making ends meet financially is a challenge - there is no big money behind the society.

    About the the Forum
The Ethics and Technology Forum is a perfectly ordinary (though reasonably full-featured) web-based bulletin board system (BBS). It exists for two main purposes: 1) to provide a forum for students in PHIL 236 at the University of Saskatchewan to discuss and ask questions about the course and, as a separate mandate, 2) to provide a forum for anyone who happens to be interested in discussing issues related to ethics, philosophy and technology. It's an experiment: I have no idea how popular or how useful it will turn out to be.
    A Mini-FAQ:
    • Anyone can register to take part in the Forum. You don't have to be a student in PHIL 236.
You do not have to use your real name. You must use a real, working e-mail address to register, but this doesn't have to be your "official" University address. If you are concerned about remaining anonymous, you can always obtain an e-mail address from Hotmail or Yahoo!

As education and literacy spread in China and scholars became influential as ministers of rulers, philosophers also began to flourish. In the late sixth century BC two of the greatest philosophers of all time emerged in China - Lao-zi, the founder of Daoism, and Confucius, whose philosophy and religion came to dominate China for more than two millennia.
    Confucius
Confucius is the Latinized form of Kong Fu-zi, which means Kong the master. Confucius was born in the small state of Lu in 551 BC and died in 479 BC. This was a time of turmoil, political intrigue, and numerous small wars in the last part of the Spring and Autumn era. Assassinations, bribery, adultery, and other crimes were common even though punishments were severe. In Lu three families contended for the hereditary rulership, while numerous educated aristocrats sought positions in the government, and many suffered poverty. Confucius was brought up as a gentleman, who took up music, archery, and fishing, although he said he fished without a net and would not shoot at a bird at rest. He was so absorbed in music that once he did not know the taste of meat for three months. He also learned to do practical jobs of humble people such as keeper of the stores and head of the pastures. However, most of the time Confucius was not able to find an official position though he was willing to do anything that did not involve wrong-doing. Perhaps it was his ethical concerns that prevented him from being useful to the rulers of his time. Instead he occupied his time in what he loved the most - the pursuit of learning.

    A Conservative Mennonite,Anabaptist Witness
to Bible Teachings This Christian Internet site seeks to present articles, books, confessions, etc., that reflect Bible views on both doctrinal and practical areas of discipleship. These are written in a clear and simple style, supported by abundant Scripture, so the Lord can use His Word to tell His own story. Let us explain about our church background. Although we have connections to churches coming out of the Swiss and Dutch state churches during the Reformation, we do not wish to give the impression that this site is only denominational in nature. We recognize that no denomination is fully faithful to the Bible's teachings. What is important is to present strong, biblically oriented writings. Most of our articles are written by people of Anabaptist persuasion. The important fact, however, is that all of our contributing writers seek to be biblically based in their writings. These Bible-practicing Christians were tagged with the Anabaptist name because they rebaptized those who had been baptized as infants or as unbelievers by the state churches. This allowed the state to persecute and put the Anabaptist believers to death under an A.D. 529 Roman law. These disciples never used the term

How does IS Ethics fit into the overall scheme of Information Systems Management? This is the question we seek to answer. While the scholarly debate continues as we define the field, it seems not unreasonable to suggest that such a task is best handled by those dually equipped to understand the capabilities and limitations of the technology, on one hand, and wield the tools of philosophical and ethical reasoning as developed over the millenia, on the other.
